newmarket
This word is something that has been grinding my gears for a long time . In the context of Fishing what does the word actually mean ? Because it seems to me to mean the obvious. Socialising. When I’m fishing I’ll often share a cuppa with the fella in the next swim ( if there is one) and I’m quite happy to have a chat with the Bailiff or anybody that might stroll by . Even the young ‘uns that can never resist asking “had anything mate ?” or “what bait your using mate ?” . Those questions are not always welcome but I’m never rude . I don’t reply that I can’t chat with them cos I’m ‘not on a social today’…. So what is “a social” in the context of Carp Fishing in particular or even Fishing generally ? Are Carp fisherman that don’t consider themselves to be ‘on a social’ taking their session so seriously that they refuse to interact with anybody else whilst fishing , which in my opinion is just damn rude ? Or is “A Social” just another name for a bank side glorified [censored] up ? Discuss .
Carpbell3
I talk to anyone most carp anglers are a bit too aragunt for me they are far too serious it's fishing at the end of the day no need to look like a hyped up trainspotter Most of my mates have never been so much as float fishing carp angling is looked upon as a personality quirk, a bit like nesting. I can borrow a canal boat anytime I like guy can't get his head around it don't appeal much for fishing. I could of been crusing to Stratford today with captain ahab on the lash, but sunny Northampton is calling.
kevtaylor
To me it means fishing with a good friend. Most of my fishing is solo - so it's nice to get out with friends who I don't spend enough time with nowadays.
jh92
My take on it is, a social is going with a mate or a couple mates or even meeting a few at the lake, all set up close to each other and you have a get together, food and a few bevvies. I do find certain types of waters attract a certain type of angler. There's a lake near me that if you ain't in their little circle, you are pretty much ignored. Usually over stocked puddles with big fish. Not my sort of water anyway lol The reservoir I'm fishing at the moment, everyone I've met has been friendly and helpful. We all share what we've caught, how many wraps, what bait, where any under water snags are etc. Trying to put each other on the fish. Or is “A Social” just another name for a bank side glorified [censored] up ? Discuss . Different things to different people. To me a 'social' in inverted commas, is a group of anglers fishing together on a water, with the barbecue, maybe a couple of drinks and a meeting time to discuss the life, universe and everything. Carp.com years ago had some good socials, Mick1396, Richardf, Chris Payne, Tryzard, Guddler, @welder , @dougmoon and @kevtaylor amongst others fishing some nice lakes where we had a meeting of minds, chat, as well as the chance of a fish or two. A chance to meet other members of the forum, some of which I am lucky enough to call friends as well. I'm not into the glorified continual drinking, I don't drink much alcohol anymore; I can't handle it, I don't like the hangovers, and water and alcohol don't mix... Saying that a nice cider, one maybe two cans or 500ml bottle goes down nicely. My usual session fishing is rarely social, although if Bruce Lait is about we socialise as close mates anyway, but we still aim to fish to catch. On my syndicate we share time, coffee, but it's not really social, it's a walk around looking for fish, or being near other members. Some people do use fishing as a social, glorified alcohol time, just not my thing very often. I'm usually happier in my own space. Strangely I get on well with most people, but often prefer to keep to myself. I think Tim @newmarket, you know me well enough to understand why. kevtaylor

elmoputney
I think I am anti social 😂 The phrase has annoyed me too in the past, I set up in a swim further up the bank because there was already 2 the other side one of them went past in his van and came back, then another one came past in his van pulled up behind mine, left the engine running whilst chatting to me, announcing he was just going to see his mate, drove back out then came back later stopped again announced he was going round there for a social with his mate, didn't invite me for a beer or nothing, fair enough, then they get set up and the other dude starts noisily packing up must have done about 100 spombs all over the place before he stuck it up a tree, still hangs there like an Xmas Dec he left at 11.30pm and then drove past me and returned at 7am and noisily got everything out the van, and started casting all over the place That session really annoyed me especially as if I knew the social man was going to go in the swim I had been baiting I would have just gone in it myself but to me that seemed bad etiquette, I want to do another France trip if anyone fancies it? I would have to clear it with the misses but now I really want to go back 😍 kevtaylor, commonly and finchey

I think it says a great deal how people close their car doors when they arrive - the slammers just don't get it- so you know straight away - noddy! Sorry but its true, announce your presence straight away zero hunter instint or understanding. Likely to be followed by noisy setting up - casting everywhere, leaving engine running behind you and talking too loud. A group of good anglers can have a social and still not annoy anyone else. commonly, elmoputney and salokcinnodrog

I am lucky in that many swims I can unload behind my swim before moving the car to the car park. I get behind the swim, switch the engine off, open the doors and unload. I shut the doors as quietly as possible with the exception of the rear and drivers door which stay open until I take the car to the car park, as I have to take Sky with me, and I can slam the doors shut properly at the car park. However don't forget to shut them properly as the boot inside light left on for a few days can flatten the battery... On our syndicate it is rare for anglers to be close to each other, unless specifically having a social session. elmoputney and kevtaylor

One thing that really bugs me is people that just turn up and drive round the swims lol, I leave my car away from the lake grab and bucket and walk round, not many do that anymore, I'm seeing a lot more vanglers lately too (kitted out fishing vans lol) , I don't want to see vans in place of bivvies when I look across the lake, I always try to park up behind trees or bushes so it doesn't spoil the view or stand out to the carp too much but they love getting them vans right in the swim, it also gave me a better idea where I can prebait though any swim you can't easily drive in 😂 kevtaylor

The Vanglers I just think it misses the whole point, I can see the benefit of quick packdown times and that but I think sitting in a van isn't proper fishing, it's like a mobile cabin and them things are going to ruin lots of lakes too if we're not careful, i had the big fully out of hot tub 3 at 6 wraps 😳 kevtaylor
