You could do with 6 rods in that swim looks so much to go for, I see the dude with the big bivvy is back… oh and nice reel 😎
Always there camping, never catches anything either, most of the water out there has pads just under the surface and is pretty unfishable.
Back in the rat/wasp den now, wasps have stopped being so mental and settled into building the nest, even one of the rats went out early today because of the noisy neighbours (Not me BTW)

Struggles pah!
If I don't catch the biggun after this , there is no carp god.
Lost 2 to cut offs, bivvied up next to a rats nest, caught a 12oz rudd on a zig, managed to get the extra night, went to the shops, was having a look round the lake, when I came back thousands of wasps are flying round the same rat tree. I've taken a rod, net, mat and the hand of god baiting pole and I'm currently perched on a boat. If it wasn't fishing I would have quit, but it beats a day at work so I will enjoy it anyway. There is still time for my luck to change.

If you like a wide gape have a look at the ESP Claw Hammer, lovely hooks and sharp out the packet too.

Have you ever tried the spliceable hooklinks you can get ?
They might be a good alternative to braid.

Peanut butter is very rich and heavy, high in lipids and would fill the carp up too much and not break down
would be better off using some mixed with baileys, thin it out
I experimented with it on maize years ago but was never a big fan of maize in the end
manilla is based on peanut extract (soluble peanut protein)..
my supermarket liquid suggestion would be real maple syrup
Satay sauce is basically thinnned down peanut butter, probably thinned down with fish sauce or soy and coconut milk or something, I like eating it too much to waste it on fish though 😂

I am having a bit of an issue with getting new rods, the lake i am fishing is proving to be dam near impossible to catch a carp, been at it since october and so far nothing and spent a small fortune on replacing my gear/new end tackle and so on, but there is the smaller pool on the complex that has plenty of fish and are catchable!
Starting to feel like i should just call it a day on big lake and stick to small pool, and stop spending on all this gear, that said the Hutchy Sceptre rods are very well priced, decisions decisions
I went through that too when I restarted. I've had about 5 sets of rods in the last 6 or 7 years, sonik, wychwood, daiwa, sonik, free spirit,
In my opinion you are best off just buying the set you really want now and save yourself going through loads of cheap rods. I had 10ft 3lb soniks and within about 6 months of use they had gone a bit soft.
Also the weather is now turning in your favour, just stick at it, find the fish, bait them and you will catch them,

found some reviews on google seems very good rods with top customer service but a few tales of the cork handles being a bit poor
Cork handles always seem to get damaged in my experience. Too easy to take a chunk out of them or they go out of shape after sitting in butt grips or whatever.
-
I have never used them but someone told me they were decent for the money, probably better than all the soniks etc in that price bracket.
For £85 you could get some free spirit helicals, which will be decent.

Got one Elmo, nice reel around £60 here’s a comparison
Phwooar nice reels matey 😉

Why not just use a fused loop fluoro boom
Gemini are a nice company
booms aren’t my thing but I got some to look at anyway for possible sea rigs
they’re good.. they don’t like the loop being mucked around with I can’t remember what I was doing to it
Personally I just see crimps as certain influential parties going a bit ott with the sales pitch side of things
crimps are for shark (and lake shark) anglers using wires.. and those species get no bother from me anyway
Also gemini booms are good, but I'm like you with your bait, they are a lot more expensive to use, and the length is fixed so if you need to adjust you are stuck.

Krimps can be very useful, it's up to you if you want to use them or not but they do have some great uses. I am sure you have tried them for more than just booms though, they are great for making shorter chods and hinge rigs, because you don't need to knot them you can easily control the height and make them much shorter than knotting. And let's be honest trying to knot 25lb mouth trap nicely can be a right chore. Not with krimps 👍

I have really used and abused my Aerlex's, for fishing, spodding and marker float work. I know that the gearing is lower, reel handle turns compared to bail arm rotation, but I actually feel that may be better in terms of the work they do.
I think I got them around 2005, so to be still going with minimal care is some going, just the occasional drop of oil. They get covered in groundbait, occasionally soaked and still do Big Boy work. Not bad for an £89 reel. I preferred them over the £105 Biomaster I think it was then, although it might have been I didn't want to spend the extra £20 each on 5 reels...
I've said since that Shimano quality has dropped, reels were built to last, now they are built to be upgraded or fail...
I'm still using my 7000 Beastmaster XTA's for fishing, and still getting positive comments from other people on the syndicate.
The DL10000's I have just don't feel as robust.
Give me the original Seaspin Baitrunners, or the 4000/6010 Aero GTE Baitrunners and I would be happy with them on lighter rods.
I've bought 2 shimano reels since my return to fishing and I've not been happy with either of them. Like you say the quality has dropped. I wouldn't buy another one tbh.
I'm okuma all the way now tbh, great reels for the money the 8k is a great big pit reel, smooth, great line lay the drag is perfect and they handle anything I throw at them. They are the epitome of Elmo Proof.
I was looking at the new versions of the big bomber spod reel last night the 8000 has a 128cm retrieve, if and when the rooblinos let's me down I will probably upgrade to one of these, then I can clean up the aerlex put the dodgy S clip back in and someone will still pay me loads for it, because it's shimano 😂

Ha! I’ve been lurking and not contributing for some time now but a new PB is worth sharing…..
I’m still on a session at Dinton’s Black Swan as I type this………Arrived at dawn yesterday. Clearly lots of fish still in the big ‘winter bay’ despite being on the back of a big SW. Lapped a couple of times, debating where to plot up with 3 nights ahead. Decided to keep it simple and put my rigs where the fish were actually showing rather than where they might end up……
Cast 3 singles out for drops amongst the emergent Eel grass which they seem so attracted to. Decided to get my head down for a couple of hours-I’d set off at 2.45am. An hour or so later I’m woken by a screaming Neville. Lifted in to a very heavy feeling fish which was dogged rather than spectacular. Worryingly, it hit the surface about 25 yds out and started shaking its head at me as I led it in; with braided mainline I’m always anxious when they do this with no water depth to cushion the lunges. Fortune was on my side and I netted a Common that got larger with every yard I gained.
With the assistance of 3 other anglers we weighed and photographed an amazing creature of 53lb 2oz! Blown away!
Wow😍 😍😍😍 that is next level, congrats Mr Guns that is a mega stunning beauty. Well done Yonny for making it happen too it would have been criminal not to share this one 😏 good luck for the rest of the trip 👍

Friend of mine was getting mouth damage in Italy, problem seemed to be the 15lb supple braid cutting the corners of the mouth. Think he just upped the BS, it was odd and out the blue - no previous issues.
🤷♂️
Kind of like a Chelsea smile???? It's why I stopped using uncoated braid, it happened to me. Now I've got the double beep shock rig I can use any rig I want with a mesh bag, usually a spinner tbh 😉if it ain't broke and all that.
-
I can't help thinking supple uncoated braid causes damage, especially if you have a big lead swinging about 4 inches from the fishes face, but yeah most fish on my syndicate with mouth damage came from when the lake used to be a match lake, we are now trying to catch them ones and retire them to another pond.

There will be little subtleties which will quickly annoy you badly
That’s my experience of cheap and/or copycat reels
I prefer to stick to proven big names but I’m not a mug for latest and greatest - mid(ish) range does me proud
Yeah I dont doubt it won't be perfect, just really an experiment to see whether a £20 reel will be up to the job, if its OK I will use it, if it annoys me I haven't really lost much and will swap back to the aerlex or buy an okuma or something.

Aerlex isn't all that tbh, I've never really felt it was a great reel it does the job now I've taken the S clip out of the bail arm but it's not brilliant, at the moment this 20 quid reel feels smoother, and nicer, whether it will stay that way remains to be seen. My okuma 8ks are miles ahead of the aerlex . They have brought out a new aerlex and it looks exactly like all the other shimano reels. And is now £120 looks like they have rebadged the speed master.
