Never used the method, however if I were on say Mallard lake Bluebell I'd be looking to re-cast maybe hourly or less depending on the situation.  Might give it a go 👍

I often think that and never get round to it lol.

I often think with bags and stuff if they havent gone in a hour or so they aren't going to go and the Rudd would have destroyed them, so would probably rechuck every couple of hours.

    If they are having it

then it really doesn’t matter if you throw a brick in

if on top of bubblers I would probably prefer a catty a couple in rather than a brick lol

if I’m fishing a bag then I probably wouldnt bother with anything else anyway.
so yup what ever floats your boat.

Of course I assumed that went without saying, obviously you use what's best for the situation.

A stick or catty  is a little more subtle than thrashing a spomb around at dusk though lol

I use Airbombs or x spods as long as you hit the clip right they are both pretty stealthy compared to a spomb. I do use a pult or throwing stick also though if I just want to bait some boilies.

Everything has advantages and disadvantages though. I mean you can just fish singles but most of the time "you gotta get the bait out somehow"

  4. I am a lot more fussy these days, with my casting close enough isnt good enough, I will take more casts to get it spot on if I need too, I'll recast onto fizzers and will recast at night if something is bothering me,I've learnt I can't relax unless it's perfect, take the other week as an example, my first take went through all my lines, just into darkness, I had to redo them all, but 3 rods went out back onto the spots perfectly in darkness and I got a take on the distance rod first light, that had taken a couple of casts but hit the clip and got the drop I needed, I know I wouldn't have slept if it wasn't bang on. After the first light bite I got 2 rods on the long spot, spombed it up and 2 hours later got a take on the extra rod I had put out there.

I think a lot of the reason I don't mind spombing is because of my spod mix, washed out boilies flaked maize and pellets, some stodgy, some fresh into the mix, a good helping of lake water, smart liquid and squid brand fish sauce makes a hell of a cloud and not loads of actual big food. I have run out of smart liquid now so might sub it out cos it's stupid expensive but it has worked pretty well. and the boilies are washed out but actractively primed for them to eat,

The last thing I'd be doing is recasting at first light as that was a predominant bite  time on the lakes I fished.

I'd recast in the dark with no issues, as long as I hit the clip and felt that lead down with a thump I'd be happy. Be that wind, rain or what.

I used to do try and avoid casting and still would mainly at first light, but if something is niggling at me that it isn't right, I will now just recast, and I'll spomb at first light too if I need too quite happily, I quite like knowing my spot is bang on and freshly primed for the morning bite time.

Mind boggling session on the syndi, arrived 6am Friday to beat the crowds and more importantly beat the long awaited weather change to westerlies.

Whilst the lake was fairly busy noone was at the East end of the lake and I got the swim I had hoped for.  The Easterly wind had died off and it was nice and calm whilst I quickly found some spots with the boat as you can't cast left with the overhangs.  It was very weedy at 5ft to half way across but then when it dropped into an 8ft gulley the weed became more clumps with clean holes dotted about.

I got 2 rods out and was baiting the last when the first was away after 10 mins and I landed my first of the year - a cracking little stocky, already looking nice and dark.

The wind started up soon after and to cut a long story short I spent the next 48 hours watching the most banging conditions of the spring come to absolutely nothing, they just didn't turn up as expected.  Plans to do an extra night were ditched Sunday lunchtime.

I can only assume they are waiting to spawn somewhere out of sight, come Sunday afternoon the lake was almost empty.

That's light isn't it for a large pit reel ,it's a bit lighter than my Ultegras as well..

I also like the 2nd version Inc's, especially now you can get spare spools from Johnson Ross for about 17 quid   ..

Okuma do some great stuff ,including the Sheffield centrepin which I use   ..

Yeah I looked at some other reels it's comparable to other loads more expensive reels from shimano and daiwa on weight and if it performs better than the 8k it would be a great reel.

I been reading about how good these Obsidian reels are ,but I guess not having actually seen o e they bigger than my ultegra 4500..they similar to 5500 xtb

The obsidians are a 12000 size so I think they are bigger than the 8k. They do look amazing though and a lot lighter than the 8k weighing in at a mere 520g. @B B is a user of the Inc6000 I believe.

    Now I’m confused here ( I know it doesn’t take a lot )

iv got a set of set of Korum 10 ft all rounders in 2 .25

and a set of Dave Lane Classic in 12 ft 3.lb with a 3.25 that I use for marking and Spoding ..umm oh yeah  🤔

    A set of 12 ft 3.50 Prologic Fulcrum …

and not forgetting the very naughty set of ESP onyx Quickdraw 10 ft 3.50

The reason for purchasing  the ESP set was I needed to get my gear down to a minimum and they pack down to 50 inches, the 3.50 because I was using bags as I thought I couldn’t complete with the bait that was going in the water I was fishing  and the thinking a bag approach would be the best option

Soooo am I a fashionable or unfashionable angler?  🤔

Or just got to much gear 🫢

Okuma Reels mate = trendsetter 👍😎

That's a good point Elmo. My beast rods (Trebuchet Lite ( 13ft 3.75)) are out-and-out casting tools but they're nothing like the broomsticks of old. The tip recovers mega quick on the cast but they do maintain some playability. Obviously it can't compare to playing a carp on a 2.75 but they're nowhere near as bad as I expected when I bought them. First season using them I ended up playing a 30+ common on a zig with 8lb hook-link. I absolutely pooped it on the take, but they dealt with it easy. Modern rods are miles ahead of where they used to be.

You have to remember until the 70's they used sticks and bits of cane from the garden with bent nails to fish with. The progress has been immense 😂

People who don't follow the (short length) extreme high 3.5oz test curve rods to cast 100metres set by tackle brands. A 12ft 2.75lb rod is capable of that distance, and more, but because fashion is dictating higher test curves are getting harder to get hold of.

With 2.75lb Century NG's I was putting baits at around 125metres, and up to 90metres with 30boilie stringers or PVA bags, and with SP's even further.

Even with my RH 2.75lb Enduro rods I am currently using, 100metres is no problem with 15lb line and a 3oz lead.

I think technology has changed I work in carbon fibre in the aerospace industry and I know technology advances different fibres, resins are constantly being invented I had some 3lb rods 20 years ago that were like broomsticks my free spirit 3. 5lb tc are far more forgiving yet I can still cast further than ever. I'm not a great caster but with the correct rods i am starting to be able to fish more accurately at distance. I also had 3lb rods that felt soft like an old 2.5lb tc ,fishing can be an expensive hobby nowadays you are looking at £500 a rod for a comparable century these days. I paid under £300 for my last set of free spirit. I bought them because of the pricepoint and I have used toray fibres through work.

Some people like shorter rods, some people don't, I think it's unfair to call them fashion victims for their preference.

Back in the early 2000's a mate* and I used to build rods, mostly fly and sea rods, although some of the blanks we got for bass were good for carp fishing. We'd order what we needed blank wise for 6 or 7 rods at a time, really only keeping guides and thread in stock.

I know a few people who build now only keep a maximum of 12 blanks in stock as it does take a fair while to build a rod nicely and with 'non-fashionable' anglers avoiding the overgunned tackle brand rods, it is almost specific builds. Sure I can do the guides in a day, but it is the lacquer, hi-build over the threads and the varnish that take the time.

*Allen did used to have an account on here.

    What are non fashionable anglers?
