    Critique my rig...

Don't be too quick to dismiss your short rig idea, I witnessed a proper haul from a tricky water with the guy using 2 inch rigs - un-coated braid. 2 x 40's, several 30's and a few 20's later there was no doubt that they were not too short to catch fish - maybe it was the edge over everyone else doing very similar things. Keep thinking outside the box fella- if you do the same as everyone expect to catch the same. We have a habit of copying what the others are doing even if they are doing badly or just ticking over with the odd fish. 👍

  2. OK...... Not OK..... What a load of tosh. You should really be putting 'imo' at the end of comments like that so guys can see it's opinion and not fact Nick. Almost all lead systems have a place for certain angling situations imo. I use a number of systems depending on what's in front of me. I reckon I use lead clips for more than half of my fishing. It's not because I'm lazy and it's not due to fashion. It's because they do the job I intend them to do.

  3. The Korda Heli-safes are most definitely NOT safe. You need the lead on a helicopter set-up to allow the rig to come off in the event of a crackoff. If the lead is ejected the fish can end up trailing rig and however much line as the line 'folds' on itself. It is the lead catching up, or dragging on the bottom, that allows the rig to come off the broken end. Personally like Smufter I nearly always use Run Rings. They can be fished as a running lead with a slack line, or as a bolt rig with a tight line. If you get a break-off the run ring is able to slide over the broken end. I don't like lead clips, they are too easy to use incorrectly. The original reason for a lead clip was so the lead could be removed at the end of a trip, instead they have become the 'lazy' fashion for lead ejection, in cases when it doesn't need to be, and also in cases the lead ejection does not work as intended. It only takes a bit of lakebed detritus to jam up the tail rubber, preventing the lead being ejected. A standard generic Korda type lead clip MUST be fixed to the hooklink swivel or quick clip so the lead clip cannot come off the swivel. As soon as it starts free, able to run up and down the line, the lead may become fixed onto the line. The tail rubber may be jammed with weed or silt, and it DOES happen. Going back to helicopter rigs, they do not give you best indication. A fish can move a long way with no movement at the buzzer and indicator end. By far the best for indication, from personal experience and experimentation, is a totally running lead.

Agree, I'm no smoker but I know that booze is 10 times more damaging than a bit of weed. Good post @Carpbell_ll.

After growing up in a high crime and drug area with the sort of problems most smaller towns and cities are seeing today my views on drugs are similar to elmoputney. Cannabis should be sold with the same regulations as booze, with restrictions in place on THC content, i think the 97 percent THC extracts you can get in the USA are just silly, Drugs like Coke and amphetamines should not be legal they cause way too much harm. LSD and real MDMA not the synthetic stuff should also be regulated and sold to adults if they wish to use such things. Heroin addiction should be treated as a health issue and not a criminal thing at a user level. i would go as far as providing petty criminals that use theft to fund their addiction with supervised heroin use, taking long term addicts out of the black market, the vast majority of new heroin users are introduced to the drug by other users. it would also cut the number of street prostitutes back by a considerable amount as they only work the streets to fund a very serious drug addiction, the same thing was tried in Switzerland and had a positive result in cutting crime. Just my opinion not looking for a debate.

this is the rig im using atm. a size 4 hook and a withypool aligner 12 inch soft coated braid with about 10mm striped from the back of the aligner to act as a hinge point and a piece of putty to turn the hook. use it with a balanced 15mm boilie. very aggressive kick off the hook that nails them every time (a bit like yours but with a little more distance between the hook point and the bottom of the aligner). probably the best bit of advice to give you an edge. your not just trying to out smart the fish your trying to out smart every other angler on the lake as well.

  7. Completely up to you mate. It's cheaper to do them yourself but ready made are good if you've not done it before. That's an even broader question lol. Different hooklinks/lines tend to be better for different rigs. Get on YouTube buddy, loads of info on there👍

Agree. But regardless of how many wrongs make a right if they dare ban booze I'm kicking off lol.

  9. If the main line snaps the rig can come off a heli so the lead is not considered fixed mate. No need for a heli safe. The heli safe does have a place imo - fished naked (no leader) is very weedy conditions. The safest set up is the one the gets the fish on the banks safely imo. That is a very broad question buddy but a simple answer would be Proper Job Pop Ups. They're the most buoyant standard pop up out there and are available in loads of recipes/flavours. I prefer a cork ball pop up but for standard pop ups Proper Jobs are the ones👍 FTM

  10. I prefer running lines... in fact all my bottom fishing is done with a running line... I also don't subscribe to using really heavy leads for running line work either.. preferring to use only just enough lead to get my rig into position

Problem is that in many cases Eastern Europeans have taken jobs from UK citizens, which is why in many cases wages have stagnated, or even regressed in many industries since 2000. Building trades, hospitality industry, even factory work has been paid at minimal hourly wage. Employment laws have become towards employers favour, not the employee. Result of the demise of unions. In 1988, I was on an annual contract of £12,000, for a 40 hour week, which is just under £6 an hour. Since then we have only gone up to £8.21. For the same job as I do now, in 2000 I earnt £25,000. I am on around £6000 less per year now. Big employers, national companies as well as local have been taking on economic migrants, from whichever part of the EU. The NHS was actively recruiting doctors and nurses from Bulgaria, Spain, Italy and Greece, and further afield, because they could pay them less, and also because they did not want to pay the training cost bursary for UK doctors and nurses. I have personally lost jobs to economic migrants, I have seen UK citizens, including our youth's, struggle to find even factory jobs. We have farmers saying they cannot get workers to work for them, yet gangmasters have been bussing in economic migrants, taking summer jobs from local residents, including kids. My summer job as a kid was fruit and veg picking, and you got paid by how much you picked, not an hourly rate. The faster you worked, the quicker you got your minimum daily amount done, and got fishing. We'd be on the fruit farm or orchard by 6.30, and fishing or whatever by 1. That last paragraph, first sentence is painful, personally, because my son, because he could not find a job got involved in drug dealing. It paid more, and County Lines is a nasty business. Despite what he was involved in, I honestly think the importation and supply of drugs should not be a criminal offence, but a terrorist offence. It is killing our country. There are too many innocent victims, as well as guilty parties. Drive by shootings, stabbings. Innocent Mothers who have lost a son because he was stabbed in a scuffle, she did not even know he was part of a drugs gang. Open warfare between one side of a town to another, post code fights. Vulnerable people having their homes 'cuckoo'ed', dealers forcing them to deal drugs, or even moving into deal from the address.

    Barbless hooks

I, too, used these in France. Never lost a fish yet almost all hookholds were released in the net. As stated, these are SHARP hooks! I used the straight points in size 4 and they were ideal. I'd add that I've just had a long weekend on Horseshoe Lake, the Carp Society's headquarters, using the same hooks. I blanked but one of my fishing buddies had a PB mirror using identical hooks in a very weedy water. I'd be happy to commend the hooks to anyone. Ian.

Great thanks for the feedback again. I definitely think I'll be making some changes and moving to a bog standard lead clip. My thoughts with the very short hook link was to encourage the carp feeling the lead and bolting sooner but perhaps foolishly I had never considered that a certain length will be required simply for the carp to pick up and get the bait deep in the mouth haha. I will certainly be changing to a longer hook link going forward

    Barbless hooks

I've used the fox armour point range. They are good hooks and very sharp. Only beaked point one i used was the chod type hook from that range. All the rest I used were straight points but all very good hooks. Regarding the kranks, size 4 or 2's . Don't go any smaller, apparently they bend out. Never had this problem with the size 4's though.

How hard is it to understand "dont steal fish" They understand and dont care. It's not better education of the laws thats needed but a greater enforcement and harsher punishment.

I've been to loads of day tickets where there is litter left all over the shop though and that isn't just Europeans it's just lazy People, I don't like litter of any kind being left by anyone,I had a go at a posh English woman cos she let her dog stinky winky on the playing field, she had to pick it up on her coat cos she didn't have any bags 😁 There are good and bad in all walks of life, perhaps there needs to be better education on fishing laws in this country I heard in Germany you have to take an exam before you are allowed a fishing licence that could work
