kevtaylor Posted January 30 Report Posted January 30 Personal gripe of mine that seems to be getting popular is venues allowing the angler to name the fish. Absolutely would not happen if it were my water, they pick the worst names, zero imagination, 'Suzie' - my wifes name', 'Brian' - my favourite neighbour- it's a joke, what happened to the creative names from the past that reference something about the actual fish. I'd maybe let them suggest a name - then reject if it's poor, give them one more go and that's it - maybe ban the plonker 🤣 I was looking at a picture of a cracking mid 30 German fish that was obviously the son of a famous mirror in Bluebell (almost identical), and it was given a terrible name that meant nothing whatsoever 'Kev's Mirror' or something equally poor, done my head in. Rant over - do better lol yonny, elmoputney, jh92 and 1 other 4 Quote

elmoputney Posted January 30 Report Posted January 30 They name new fish over 30lb on my syndicate. I actually named one last year. Meet Snowball. Bonus points if you can tell where the name is from? jh92 and kevtaylor 2 Quote

emmcee Posted January 30 Report Posted January 30 When I was on dinton one particular angler wanted to name every fish it seemed and some of the names were ludicrous. An example of some of the names, Rudd mouthed linear, two sides (all Carp have 2 sides🙄), the bay fish (because he caught it from the car park bay), heart tail (haven't they nearly all got tails that are heart shaped in some way). Then he would add extra names to already named fish. On dinton if you caught a new 40lber you got to name it. A mate of mine caught one but he wasn't fussed about naming it but it ended up being named after his nickname which was sid. Sid was then called sid the pig by this other angler as it put on 1lb by its next capture, it's a carp for god sake. He wasn't the first angler to add extra names to already named fish mind. A fish called The long linear became Bernies linear, astra became astra max, not that I called them that, I stuck to their original names. I think half of it is to name a carp for the sake of it as that angler wants to be known for naming a carp 🙄. There's never going to be another Mary, Black mirror, shoulders, Heather, bazil etc , just stick to mirror, common and leather. Though now I do sea fishing I get to name a fair few of my fish , they are either called lunch or dinner . yonny, framey, kevtaylor and 3 others 6 Quote
yonny Posted January 30 Report Posted January 30 @emmcee was it BL? You're going back a loooooong way with some of those carp names. Astra Max.... was in Tels book with some of those others. kevtaylor and emmcee 2 Quote
salokcinnodrog Posted January 30 Report Posted January 30 A pit and Barham fish: Gary Linear, The Male, Stumpy, Arfur, Turbo, Titanic, The Cow. I know the background to The Cow, she basically had a belly like a cows udders, quite short but gutty. Stumpy the Common, when she was a double figure fish, someone dropped her and her tail and back was damaged, it looked like the bone was broken, but she recovered and made it over 20lb. Arfur tail, pretty obvious. Turbo, fast run, fast fight and like always at full throttle. Gary Linear, a play on a famous footballer. The Male, a known male fish. As for Titanic, I have no idea. Not forgetting Dippy, who was originally named so because she was regularly caught. Brackens had some named fish, Digit, Rocky, Sam's, The Ghost, although the only one I know where the name came from was the Ghost. It was a pale koi looking Common and appeared like a ghost in the area. The syndicate I'm in has a few named fish, although I'm hoping to name the big uncaught common myself. I miss Heather, Bazil, and the waters and names of that era. kevtaylor 1 Quote

My mate had the long linear 5 times but not once did want to rename it haha. The other angler was a yateley angler that obviously wanted to be "known". yonny and kevtaylor 1 1 Quote

Story goes: Had new boots on that day and it took me into a snag so I stripped down, didn't want to sit in wet clothes for rest of day so off came the trousers n new boots n i went in to free it from the snag in my socks and pants hence the name. Thought it would be better than calling it Jeff lol Quote

Serenity Posted February 6 Report Posted February 6 Naming fish is anathema to me. Way back in the early 70s, I banked a fish and before I could even unhook it a guy rushed forward and said: “That’s big [censored], my mate had it last week at 27 lb.” That episode completely spoiled the moment for me. Naming fish and broadcasting their weight destroys what little mystery there is left in carping. kevtaylor 1 Quote

A heavily gutted fish with a recessed line down the keel line, and yes, it looked like a pair of testes in the scrotum. I agree and disagree. As I've mentioned above we do have some named fish in the syndicate lake, but we also have mystery with uncaught fish and how quickly the stock fish have put weight on. kevtaylor 1 Quote
