I'v done well on long hairs over the years, even on pop ups, one of my best sessions came while using a 2inch gap between hook and bait with the hook 3inches of the deck, all were hooked solid and bang dead centre , and one had the bait cut off.....this I guessed was because the bait had been taken back into the teeth.............now a bit of a ramble as its hard to write what I think, but, the mass (?) of the bait is affected far greater when blown out then the mass of the hook ( or is it drag?? something anyway), so when the bait goes in further with the hook, the hook stays in longer(milliseconds) until the bait is ejected which I believe gives a better chance for the hook to turn and take a hold.

One thing that I know for sure is that while using long hairs I hardly ever have hook pulls.

I haven't been over there since my season on there during my last posts. I do know that the year after a few lads did a deal with one of the rangers to be allowed to fish the nature reserve and moved the ones they caught in to Mill and the North, If my memory serves me right 3 went into Mill and 2  Into North.

There is also a rumour that the bailiff over at the Rotary peed a lot of members off and one of them caught the big'un and moved it into North.....which would match up with a mate that fished North and spotted something large on a few occasions.

But I'd go on Mill still, lovely little lake.Well worth taking your rods.

Is it classed as bad angling to have the clutch loose when Carp fishing??? I never have it tight( if not on snags) but wouldn't say its super loose either. In all the years I'v carp fished I'v only ever lost one fish to snags and that was because it kitted on a leadclip into some reeds to my left without a beep If i had a boat I'd feed it but that wasn't allowed and has it was during my chemo I wasn't chancing a swim to free it, so cut the line and listened to it thrash about all night till morning when I'm sure ( and still hope ) it dragged the line free and out to open water or dumped the hook.

On Barnwell I fished up to the reeds with running rigs and untight clutch and all the takes came away to open water ,my mate fished the same spots with leadclips and all his takes tried to bury into them

Another short session but over night this time. Got the rods sorted by about 10pm.
Lost one at 11.30pm. Landed one at 12.30am. Then lost one in a snag at 6am. I'm glad I have a boat on the lake as it meant I could reel right up to the snag and check that the fish was free.

Fished a venue last weekend that I haven't visited in a while. Managed this 20lb common

The fish on my local water spawned 2 weeks ago. Thursday I decided to head back down. I had this common within 1 hour of arriving.

I thought my luck was in and the fish were truly on the munch after doing the deed......it wasn't to be, I had to wait 25 hours or so for the next bite, but it was well worth the wait....

39lb and the most brutal scrap I've ever encountered!

I'll kick it off then. After a tough couple of nights on horseshoe in the week, I decided for some more punishment and did a night on the syndicate last night. I got there about 9pm and had these two at 2.30am. As soon as the sun got up this morning, I headed home with the fish in the upper layers. We have banned zigs for a few weeks to encourage members to put a bit of bait in to help them after spawning! Otherwise I would have stopped till tea time!!!!

A very wet two days, watching shed loads of carp having it away with the naturals in the weed about 50 yards or so out of my water. The swims that command that area were all taken.
Couldn't get nothing on bait, nor on zigs, mid and high up in the water. Every time I wound a lead in, the weed around it was covered in fish eggs. With the amount of weed drifting down from that area told me that this is what the fish were interested in.
With nothing to loose just on dark on the last night, whilst still scratching my head of how to grab a bite, I tied up two 8inch long zigs that would sit just above the weed. A little black and white foam ball soaked in Essential baitsThaumatin B were attached to the hair and they were flung out as close to the shows as I could get them without interfering with the anglers on the Whitney bank.
I had a good nights sleep, apart from being woken at 3am thinking someone was breaking into cars in the car park. I went up to investigate but couldn't see anything untoward.
Waking on first light an hour or so later, I was starting to accept a blank couple of days when, as I was reading a text off the wife giving me a 'pinch, punch, first of the month', the mini zig came good and I was finally into a carp.
A lovely looking blank saver made sure I was going home with a wet net!
I said to Carl that I was trying something a bit different - it worked mate! I'm sure if I didn't have to pull off the lake due to the junior carp camp coming on, I could have had a couple more during the morning on them. I'll definitely be employing them if I find myself in that situation again!

That would be my thinking too.

Another thing I've found to work in a tank test, once the bag is tied up, tie a couple of pva nuggets to the side of the bag you want up. Pretty well always lands well.

My bags, with pop ups, doesn't really matter which way up they land cause as you say, the popup will work its way to the top.

I had some so-called wafters, that lifted the hair on a size 6, so I used them on a size 10 as a zig  To me a wafter has to be neutrally buoyant or its a poor pop up!!

I agree Beanz...... It's just if you watch the thinking tackle of 6/7 years ago EVERYTHING had to be invisible....... Now it's going full circle...... Anglers(some) are a lot easier to catch than carp.

which way do your bags land up then???......If wafters are neutral, then if upside-down then the only visual is the bag contents.... A pop up (blatant or not) will sit above the contents ....speeding up the chances......or is that crazy talk????(Im thinking shotted not zigging styley)
