Finally got out and caught one this weekend. Got to the lake Saturday lunchtime to find only one other on. Had a look around in the island half of the lake and as usual found a few mooching about. It was really weedy everywhere so I continued walking, looking at the bigger end of the lake I just thought it looked good, whilst it was still very weedy. I got the plumbing rod out to look for a spot I used to know. It still existed a bit but was a lot smaller. Did quite a lot of leading about and didn't find a lot else so raked a spot close in for a 3rd rod, one mountain of weed later it was done, flicked in a load of pellets to let the Rudd go to work, I stuck a rig on it straight away but a couple of hours and it had stunk out my pineapple pop up. Continued baiting it and left it for the morning. 2 rods went out to the bank of pads and weed onto a plateau baited with a good few spombs of boilie and pellet mix and just chucked the 3rd onto another clear spot I had found in the other side margin. Nothing much happened until I was asleep and about 2am I had a series of beeps and line was being taken so I hit it and instantly it was weeded up, it came in like a big ball of weed for a while when it got free of that went nuts and found another weedbed, this continued for a while and I just kept trying to gain line, until it got to the weed In front of the swim I tried and failed to get it round the side and it locked me up solid. In the end my only hope was putting the rod down. Luckily after a vape I picked it up and it came free I ended up landing it and a free ball of weed. Couldn't find my tripod, or water bucket, and my intervalometer batteries were dead so had to find some more of those. Luckily I could use a picnic bench that was in the swim as a tripod. Not the greatest photo but at 3am it was the best I could manage. 31lb 3oz of hard earnt carp. I also lost one to my line parting (happened straight away off a drop back) , caught a massive rudd on a size 4 pop up I had a couple of what I thought were liners because my raked spot was fizzing, sadly no takes because of the Rudd, and I also had a pretty big tench with weed ball also on a pop up.bith slipped back because I needed a nap, The trig hammer XT got a big test and passed with flying colours. I had a little nap and came home a happy but tired and achey man. These were the biscuit of the week in my world, they came alive when you dunked them. And pink what's not to love.

There are certainly some still around. My old syndicate lake had 4 known originals in it when I fished there, all from an original stocking of Leney's. As far as I'm aware they are all still in there, I stopped fishing there 5 yrs ago but I still chat to mates on there and the usual one was caught last year and the most sought after one came out this spring. Some members had been on there years trying to catch one but luckily for me my second fish from the lake was one and the most sort after one at that when I fished there. I had it in 2017 and it was 50yrs old then. It wasn't caught last year but made an appearance this spring so still going strong at 58yrs old. Another lake that may well hold some original Leney's is Frensham ponds.

  13. Finally got an overnighter in for the first time in a while, had 4 runs, one I lost when it beached itself just short of the net and the hook came out (my fault, I knew the water level was down and that margin was shallow!)

    End of Nash Bait

I also used to make my own baits back in the day when you had to. i can’t be bothered to make them so I go to baitworks now as I like the ethos of the whole business. i happily pay what ever it says in the shopPing trolley I don’t want or ask for any further discounts or to beholden to any company for tackle or bait I buy and use what I deem the BEST for the purpose that I need at the time. happy to use almost any tackle company from A-Z apart from 2 one that starts with O as I don’t like their company ethos and the other I haven’t bought any from since they started blaming customers for incorrect use of their flame thrower stoves. i do own a few Nash products but yep they seem to have lost their way. was watching someone use one of their bushwhackers yesterday and it went out miles lol

    End of Nash Bait

Seriously been thinking about this. Nash bait, well did very well back in the day with ready mades when from memory was only competing against Richworth and maybe a few others? I used them a few times, not to bad tbh. Times have changed, they have been so much overtaken by sooo many bait firms, can't compete. Also the whole Nash brand I suspect will now do a nose dive, Alan Blair, that Jamie bloke, Carl and Alex. etc etc on social media will eventually die a death, tbh if I was the bloke I would sell the lot at his age and just retire with his own lake to fish. As an old git I actually don't care anymore about these old firms...... except the demise of Premier Baits who actually sent me a free T Shirt, which I wore for many a pic πŸ™‚

  16. You would have thought a peg should be able to do its job without thinking about it kind of like that picture they could use a set of wings or prongs like a fork on the top part of it that you can stand on at the end to give it a final push home once wound in as an added bit of security. there ya go kev a proper bit of development that will keep the company afloat a while longer

  19. There is enough free stuff online to learn from and quickly no doubt, however some things are said over and over but are not digested. How many anglers have said on film you need to watch the water, move onto fish yet how many actually do this? - barely any! I'll be stood out in the water for hours at dusk just watching and it actually makes people un-comfortable opposite - it's like what's he doing staring at the water, I'll shuffle about and hide in the bivvy again! Up at 8-9am, get up spod for no reason, no laps, no move, no watching - yet they've seen the same videos as everyone else. I guess it always comes back to are you camping or fishing? I've got a mate who will not move regardless, and doesn't watch the water, got the technical set-ups right but a bit lazy with that too, hook points etc Really he's camping to get away from it all which I understand totally but in his head he's doing everything that his hero Adam Penning does! Weird rant sorry everyone lol

  21. How big is the lake, do you need to cast long distances? If the answer is no to the above then I'd be on 15lb, 18lb or 20lb mainline (though you should still be able to cast a fair way with either breaking strain line). You should be looking at a mainline that is known for being abrasion resistant especially with the presence of lily's, reed beds and tree over hangs etc as the carp will want to get into these if you hook them. Hooklinks are personal choices and should really be determined by what the lake bed is like, gravel, silt, clay etc, suit your hooklink to whichever you're fishing over. As for the breaking strain, most are between 15lb to 25lb I'd say and once again with the lily's etc I'd go on the heavier side personally.

    God Save the King!!

In the Great Lakes and tributary rivers 20lbs common carp is the average size and they school in large numbers. There are many 40lbs carp. As you mentioned, carp fishing in Canada is not popular like in the UK and EU. A large sports chain store called SAIL is clearing out all of the Blax Carp Spirit inventory due to lack turnover. Canadians think of carp as garbage fish and turn their noses up at them. Canadians prefer to fish for walleye, bass and muskellunge in Ontario. Anyway, I am looking forward to catching some nice one's shortly Enjoy your day, Gents! CZ

Feral carp reverting towards the original wildie type have what is referred to as a Danubian Notch. However true wildies don't have it. I think it is like the straight head to the body, whereas bred carp have a slight dip.

  27. I got hold of Hutchy's Golden Years after pre-ordering it almost as soon as it was given a release date. Rod Hutchinson was, or is, an angling hero of mine, and I have read many of his own books; from bait to tackle he was a pioneer and understood more than us mere mortals will ever get, so I was really interested in his early life and journey into carp fishing and this book most definitely does not disappoint. From his time at Redmire with Chris Yates, to Savay, with chapters on his captures by long time companion Brian Hankins and his joy for fishing and life by Simon Crow.

  28. On my water they do the job for tufties, coots, moorhens and swans. The mallards aren't bothered but they tend not to cause a problem in anything over around 3 ft depth. I got rid of my laser pen several years ago after I saw how the carp react to it. I was perched in the lower branches of a tree watching the carp that were on my spot just up the margin. A couple of coots were diving on it so I got the pen out to scare them off. Big mistake. As the laser hits the water it refracts, and a bright green stripe akin to a light sabre trails through the water. The water is that much denser than air that it really accentuates the laser.... it looked awful. The carp were absolutely horrified - they immediately bolted right out of the bay I was in, and didn't come back until the same time the next day. It was that bad I literally binned the laser as soon as I got home.

    Today's thought.

It happens buddy. I went nearly 2 seasons on a large water just catching the odd bream. Have you got confidence in a. your spots, b. your rigs and c. Bait??? I very gone back to a rig I have every confidence in, check. Bait is good, but always changing pop up colour on the snowman. So just leaves spot, which is mainly down to watercraft & arguably a bit of luck. In the past I'd be quick to change everything, big mistake. Just small tweaks can make all the difference along with time at the water, you'll unlock the puzzle soon enough.

I guess you can't teach effort, energy and enthusiasm which the best have in bucket loads. I met a few very keen younger anglers this spring thought there was gonna be too much competition, but thankfully not seen any of them since - talked a good game then the blanks kicked in. Sadly there's been a tackle theft on one of the lakes this year so leaving the kit for laps has become a bit risky so I either check the nearby swims or put the valuables back in the car and do a lap. Moving is exciting you've found something and a fresh new plan comes into play, but sometimes staying put and giving it an extra night is the one - but I struggle with that one.

Decent video.. I enjoyed it.... but I cannot help but think it's not quite as good as all the Tel videos that Jack Reid of ESP produced. It looks like Steve Metcalfe produced this one, the marketing guy at Sticky/TA, which makes sense. With fish of that quality on film it's hard to go wrong and it was a decent watch. Fantastic for a first attempt at a Tel vid. They're Ruben Heaton Flyweights..... some of the best =/<40lb scales you can get. I used to carry a set for smaller kippers and still have them somewhere. It make sense to carry them with the big scales in the car. No-one catches a 40 on every trip... not even Tel. Agree. Proper gnarly.

On reflection, maybe a bit harsh on my comment, as ever the carp were amazing, big old ones and not fished to death by noddies! Couple of things tho... why did he use some 'cheapo' scales to weigh the fish? and... kept mentioning about the 20mm boilies, might be the Source, but did notice a 'sneak' view of a Sticky bag coming from the cool box too? Fair play to the bloke deff better videos than most. Just wish I could get out on the bank today and tomorrow but unfortunatly lakes are closed... weed clearance apparently, didn't seem to bother Tell tho πŸ™‚ Or me if I was allowed to fish!

  43. Well, I've had a forage through the far reaches of the shed and found several old method feeders. I'd even got a couple of the large, elasticated ones but they're in the bin as potentially hazardous in the case of a break-off. Favourite among the rest are some quite large, three-vaned ones by Korda which I intend to use. I'll report back with results, if any. Ian.

  48. Duck free lol aaaagh!!! On the plus side I learnt to fill them up with mixers late evening Saturday, that worked - no more diving and 3 passing single fish stopped and had a few too, Sunday morning they weren't too much trouble. Before that basically all day Saturday they destroyed my 2 spots - I reckon they've eaten about 15kilo over the last 2 weekends most of which was boilie! So much for getting spots going πŸ‘Ž I did catch one (a duck) Saturday early evening and that did scare them off for a while, tapped him on the beak and called him 'Stupid', that showed him lol Next 6 weeks I'm in work on Fridays so will be getting there late or going early Saturday. I need to find where these fish do their early morning feeds because I'm not getting enough traffic in this part of the lake and the ducks well they're just being ducks - and lots of them. Might need a complete change of approach going forward tbh
