  1. Reporting from the social, I decided to move on Saturday morning had a walk round with Dale and decided it was best, I moved into Bogmageddon and after a slog with the barrow, fannied about and found some spots, it soon became apparent I had made the right call when I saw one bosh to my left, then another to my right, got the rods tried to throwing stick some boilies out as I managed to lose my spod in a shimano faulty bail arm incident, that the others didn't rinse me for at all πŸ˜‚ Of course within minutes there were a flock of seagulls trying to eat every last one. But I figured I has some in the zone, within an hour I had a weird bite lifted One bleep dropped right back then lifted again, and I was in, went right to get behind an island then went left to get behind another, then wstsyed deep to try and lose me over the massive plateau betwixt us, but I got it over, it tried to go through all my lines and eventually I netted the beast of bogmageddon, all 27 and a half lbs of it, Leon (commonly) came to assist with the photos and as actually managed to make me smile for one 😬 As I write it's lashing down the swim looks like a wet Glastonbury and I'm not looking forward to packing up but it's been fun and eventful, maybe time for another but it doesn't seem as likely today, hopefully I've pushed them down for Leon to have a busy night tonight.

  2. Got out today... over me club lake... a nice scrappy common got in on the act and gave me a good tear up all the way in from about 30 yards out... Rod was a 9'3" Sharpe, reel is an Abu 77 Cardinal, had a smaller carp which didn't stay still long enough for a shot... also had the scabbiest Bream in the lake...πŸ₯΄

  3. Did a quick overnighter on my winter estate lake last night, wind hacking into my face, mild night, overcast with showers on and off. This lake is a typical mixed fishery, rather than an out and out carp fishery, but has a good head of carp to 25lb(ish) the frogs were active in the margins, a sign spring is springing. I had a hectic night, with 14 carp landed plus 2 bream from 18 takes, a few low doubles, a smattering of singles and a couple of 20s to top it off. 15lb 20lb ghostie 22lb 14lb

    New purchases

Just stocked up on bait kit, five kilo of DNA switch plus bits and a 25kilo bag of pellets a nice low oil one that will absorb a food signal liquid. Really am looking forward to getting out, not getting a club ticket this year, I'm doing day ticket waters starting the end of this month all I need is batteries and a unhooking mat and I'm out out.

  8. Back down for another 3-4 nights potentially, picked back of the wind based on what I saw last trip and after setting up I saw several shows to my surprise, showing me where to put the rods, fingers crossed might get lucky - think I've dropped right on them unless they're passing through, some chunks to - fingers crossed 🀞

    Tactics for big park lake

When I first fished a big pit I set my stall out and fished at 40yds or less for 90% of my fishing, especially when seeing most anglers casting as far as they could. I also concentrated on the bays on this particular lake as the fishing was comfortable for me and more into my style. Im not someone who likes to fish as far they can so I only ever launched baits to the horizon if that's where the fish were. Don't get sucked into what you see everyone else doing. And the obvious one is location, location, location. Also Write down where you see them , the wind direction, weather, the atmospheric pressure (in my opinion and my findings were these factors play a bigger part on larger pits than smaller ones)all these will help you get a picture of the fish are up to.

  12. 4 night blank to get me into the swing of things, lots to learn and a new playing field as the water is up 4ft on last year's drought level. Great trip loved it - spring is in the air, the birds are at it, frogs in the margins being hunted by pike and masses of bugs crawling out the lake especially during rain - so many caddis or whatever they were that it freaked me out - all coming under my door by the dozen. Can't wait to get back down asap.

    New purchases

First trip of the year tomorrow but been busy buying stuff I dont need in prep obvs 🀣 Got the Solar undercover Pro sleep system, lighter than my SP Tech - will be on the barrow again this year so trying to lighten the load. Got for Β£205, seen after on AD for almost Β£450 - unbelieveable ripoff. 3 pots of NS1 pop-ups discounted from a show in Essex. Bird Torch - same show. Then as I'm not buying a new 1 man bivvy and going back to my old Avid brolley system I justified that the money saved could be spent on the Fortis Tundra 🀣 Got the bottoms from the show with a Β£20 discount. Then the coat after at full retail πŸ‘Ž Oh and the Diawa 18 Emblem Spod 35 SCW QD Reel because my Shimmy Spod (new) ceases up whenever it's left out in the rain or damp (rubbish, what a let down thats been). Think thats it, broke but happy! 😁😎

  17. All of my fish at Ardleigh Reservoir were caught at around 40-50metres maximum. One was caught at about 20metres when I saw fish moving around an inlet so cast a bait where I saw them. Even on Alton I don't think I cast more than 70metres.

    Scaling back

Here's a picture including all the items above in their respective pouch and my other tackle pouch which has all my tackle for river fishing (chub, barbel, and perch). The bottle of scotch is for scale purposes obviously.

    Scaling back

To scale back you really need to decide what you actually need for the vast majority of your fishing. You also need to be content with the fact they you will never cover every possibility. I really do not enjoy carrying loads of unnecessary things in anything I do - whether that be fishing tackle or tools for a job. If I can buy something that has multiple uses then I will prioritise that. When I stopped carp fishing exclusively, my items of end tackle all fit into a 9" by 6" zipped bag which I have attached a picture of. The little box has a few beads, swivels etc in, the bit of pipe lagging as a few pre-tied rig bits pinned on, and the cut down pva tube has the hook section of hinge stiff rig/chod rigs in - which can be used for either rig obviously. I have three packets of hooks only. I think most people would shudder at the idea of taking so few items of terminal tackle with them. Personally, I always found it very relaxing to have a very simple approach to work from. Granted I may add items as a situation dictates but I never found myself feeling the need to try something for no reason whatsoever. I would advise seriously considering concocting a very basic approach to carp fishing (i.e. deciding on three rigs that cover most situations you can envision) and decide EXACTLY what you need to do that.

  22. How big? Frameys' advice is spot on. On big waters I tend to find they're much easier to catch than on on small waters. The hard bit is finding them.

  23. Find em feed em catch β€˜em you just need to break a larger lake down into smaller lakes find the best view of as much of the lake as possible in each area follow the winds. just visit as much as you can and walk don’t even take the gear if it’s not too pressured

  24. Dynamite Fresh Fish Pop-Ups look a very good match to dog biscuits, cut it into a square and it's pretty bang on. The fake weighted floaters are good as the hook sits on top, out of the water, you can literally bounce them over weed to get it into little clearings where the fish are sitting. Zigs work whilst feeding mixers over the top, especially if they are rejecting the hookbait. My mate is a good floater angler, he uses the dog biscuits on the hook, but prepares them in a bottle of water and adds pressure to get them to take in the water to what he finds the right amount, I've only seen this once so can't remember the fine details - but that really works well.

    The Green Party

In the great scheme of things, I'll not be voting in the election this time round... As a pensioner I've seen too many abuses of power and privilege over the years, I think this years election will see one of the lowest turnouts in history, people are sick of all the infighting and point scoring rather than genuine work to better this country Billy Connolly has it right... "any desire to be a politician should automatically preclude you from being one" Politicians are in it for money, perks and power... nothing else... Don't encourage them...

  30. Take care mate... you'll get the bug once more... In 2011 I lost my dad and I packed up for 2 years... my lass told me to leave the gear in the garage in case I started up again ( I did) When I returned it wasn't the same, but the enjoyment for fishing was still there, I later packed in match fishing and got into vintage gear... I've not looked back... I still have my carbon carp rods but they are rarely used now. I now don't fish as often as I used to through ill health (collapsed back and knackered knees) but when I do the thrill is still there.. Look after yourself... πŸ˜ŽπŸ‘

Biggest I weighed was over 7lb. That's a big shore caught ray! They appear to have moved away this week though, but the crabs are active so they might move back into the area if the weather stays calm. If not, the whiting caught are still fun.

  37. Thanks, but I think Chris Ball (RIP) did it as your version. I do recall Brian Skoyles version in a Nutrabaits Bait catalogue magazine. I never got on with fake plastic mixers, or even cork balls. For some reason I found using 'fake' surface baits they were rejected even faster than mixers or bread, and that's fast enough, even if I had fed constantly. As much as feeding constantly frequently works, for some reason sometimes, the carp will pick up one surface bait then bog off and disappear. Difficult to gauge, but in this case, hookbait first, hopefully catch one while you have the chance. Normally though you can feed, get them feeding and then get them to take the hookbait. This is one of my favourite 20's, a ghostie mix common. I'd gotten the fish feeding on surface baits around the lily pads behind me, but the ghostie would only take a bait touching the leaves. It took ages to work a hookbait in between the two lily beds and get it to take. It looked like the largest fish in the group as well. I'd say it was stalking, so not bad for an afternoon fishing at Hintlesham when the other anglers were all behind the artillery waiting and blanking.

    Floater fishing

Use a brown pop up and trim it down until it sits perfectly. You're dead right that overly buoyant hook baits will be ignored if they sit too high in the surface film. By trimming down a pop up you can get it just right and the hook bait will last for hours. I certainly wouldn't be inserting cork into mixers as they'll still fall apart pretty quickly. As long as the hook bait sits ok in the surface film and you have them feeding properly, you'll get bites. πŸ‘

    The Green Party

This is where my point exactly comes to pass. The DWP cannot afford to be giving funds to Albanians, to Romanians, Nigerians, and pick any number of nations who are leaving their own countries because in Britain they can get benefits for doing nothing. Why should we fund and pay for criminal lifestyles? Which is happening! In Ipswich as a Loss Prevention officer, the majority of my cases were Romanian shoplifters, who did it for a living. In London, Nigerians were credit card fraud, Albanian drug dealers and various Eastern Europeans and all getting benefits, more than I live on now as disabled! Britain's political system is broken, it needs reform, but that is reform with no political parties.

Not sure I would trust them long term but they certainly have bigger fish to fry in the short term. I think we are facing much bigger issues than banning fishing though at present, labour and tories both complicit in a genocide a vote for either is a vote for evil. The right wing chancers reform are just a bunch of lying racist fascists, quite frankly if you have a decent independent in your area vote for them or nothing will change
