    Anglers naming fish

When I was on dinton one particular angler wanted to name every fish it seemed and some of the names were ludicrous. An example of some of the names, Rudd mouthed linear, two sides (all Carp have 2 sidesπŸ™„), the bay fish (because he caught it from the car park bay), heart tail (haven't they nearly all got tails that are heart shaped in some way). Then he would add extra names to already named fish. On dinton if you caught a new 40lber you got to name it. A mate of mine caught one but he wasn't fussed about naming it but it ended up being named after his nickname which was sid. Sid was then called sid the pig by this other angler as it put on 1lb by its next capture, it's a carp for god sake. He wasn't the first angler to add extra names to already named fish mind. A fish called The long linear became Bernies linear, astra became astra max, not that I called them that, I stuck to their original names. I think half of it is to name a carp for the sake of it as that angler wants to be known for naming a carp πŸ™„. There's never going to be another Mary, Black mirror, shoulders, Heather, bazil etc , just stick to mirror, common and leather. Though now I do sea fishing I get to name a fair few of my fish , they are either called lunch or dinner .

    Anglers naming fish

Personal gripe of mine that seems to be getting popular is venues allowing the angler to name the fish. Absolutely would not happen if it were my water, they pick the worst names, zero imagination, 'Suzie' - my wifes name', 'Brian' - my favourite neighbour- it's a joke, what happened to the creative names from the past that reference something about the actual fish. I'd maybe let them suggest a name - then reject if it's poor, give them one more go and that's it - maybe ban the plonker 🀣 I was looking at a picture of a cracking mid 30 German fish that was obviously the son of a famous mirror in Bluebell (almost identical), and it was given a terrible name that meant nothing whatsoever 'Kev's Mirror' or something equally poor, done my head in. Rant over - do better lol

  3. Well... considering that Richard Walker's 44lber from Redmire kicked off the carping craze in the UK, I think its only fair we take note of the fact that he landed a 44lb Common on a 10 foot cane rod of approx 1.5lbs Test Curve... and not a spod rod Us vintage lads have seen everything in the carp world more or less, and we're still pulling 20's out on our bits o' cane...πŸ˜‰πŸ˜›πŸ˜ŽπŸ‘ That said, Walker was an innovator and I'm sure he would have embraced the modern methods had he been alive today

  12. D'ya know... when I started fishing with vintage gear, I was still using modern methods... hair rigs, lead clips boilies etc etc... but one thing I've found is that fish wise up to all this frippery... and one afternoon, I took a rod net mat and a pot of prawns... nowt else, and I caught... all I had on the line was a prawn, no lead, no putty, no swivels just a hook and a bait... Our club lake has been carp fished for decades and they've seen every rig under the sun and everyone does the same... two rods one long one short, 30 baits around each lead clipped 5" rig, hair rigged size six with a 16mm boilie... Nowadays there are different options of leads, hooklinks, self hooking rigs... but so many folks use those options they're not different any more... so just a baited hook has been scoring, as the fish haven't come across such a basic rig... occasionally I use a bit of plasticine around a float stop for a bit of casting weight which can slide off the line in the event of a break, but in the main, its just a hook... pressured fish see every sort of rig nowadays... maybe try summat totally different... Could it be that carping has come full circle...???

  14. Thanks guys. nick, I'm not trying to make you buy one don't worry πŸ˜‰ this is a hypothetical question,I'm just interested in what people would take if they had 4 kontainer sections, so which four bait options would you take to make the best spod mix you would take anywhere? You can also carry hookbaits, bag mixes, liquids etc so you don't need to worry about those Eg Boilies Chops Pellets Garlic Maize Would be something I could take anywhere confidently.

  15. A pit and Barham fish: Gary Linear, The Male, Stumpy, Arfur, Turbo, Titanic, The Cow. I know the background to The Cow, she basically had a belly like a cows udders, quite short but gutty. Stumpy the Common, when she was a double figure fish, someone dropped her and her tail and back was damaged, it looked like the bone was broken, but she recovered and made it over 20lb. Arfur tail, pretty obvious. Turbo, fast run, fast fight and like always at full throttle. Gary Linear, a play on a famous footballer. The Male, a known male fish. As for Titanic, I have no idea. Not forgetting Dippy, who was originally named so because she was regularly caught. Brackens had some named fish, Digit, Rocky, Sam's, The Ghost, although the only one I know where the name came from was the Ghost. It was a pale koi looking Common and appeared like a ghost in the area. The syndicate I'm in has a few named fish, although I'm hoping to name the big uncaught common myself. I miss Heather, Bazil, and the waters and names of that era.

@emmcee was it BL? You're going back a loooooong way with some of those carp names. Astra Max.... was in Tels book with some of those others.

  17. Each section is 3ltr or bigger than a trade can of WD40 in real world terms, I estimate there is over 2kg of 12mm boilies in that one.

    Mainlines & Floater Lines

I wish! Can't see it happening, it didn't sell well, shame as it was absolutely awesome. Hydrotuff still your best bet. Floater wise, can't help. Do a lot of zigging but seems years since I got a floater rod out.

    Bivvy Heating - staying warm

Best boots I ever tried (and I've tried most) were North Face insulated waterproof snow boots (I think they call todays equivalent the Chilkat). I still use these now as the insulation is the nuts, but, like any boots, they only work if the legs are super warm. Warm legs feed the feet with warm blood.

  22. I use the ready peeled from sainsburys, not the little'uns, the bigguns cooked or uncooked, chop a couple up to scatter in, no more's a couple. I use them whole hooked through the thickest part. Make sure the point of the hook is showing as a meaty prawn is tough to strike through... this is not a self hooking rig

  28. You like the Hydrotuff, stick with it. Sounds silly, but it can take a while to get used to a different brand or type of line. Saying that, the Gardner lines, must be the best available. Floater fishing wise, I go old school, still on Daiwa Sensor with a Berkeley XL, Preston Reflo or Drennan Sub Surface fly hooklink.

  35. Adjustable zigs for me into the centre area of the lake. I set the alarm on my phone and adjust the zigs every hour, work the depths of water if no luck cast all rods to a different area starting over again. If you want to use a bottom bait I personally prefer maggots at this time of the year.

Ive got at least 10 buckets but my mate must have nearer to 30. When we went Italy because I wasnt smoking I struggled to sleep and had weird dreams every night with at least 2 of which centered around a massive wall of buckets in someones swim it was like bait wars, woke up stressed out πŸ€£πŸ€¦β€β™‚οΈ The mans got 100 buckets, we're screwed! 🀣
