2023 social- who's up for it??
dalej2014 and 2 others reacted to elmoputney for a topic
A good head of originals from the Middleton era up to 40lb, 75 VS fish and quite a few hand picked DOR 70 Strain have been added since Rob took over, my rough estimate would be about 200 but that's just a complete guess, but hopefully we can catch one or two, and have a good chance of it being a 20+3 points -

Powapacks Atom - got the USB-C several USB's - 2 being fast charge and the 3 pin plug socket. Use mine to charge everything fishing related: baitboat, bivvy light, head torch, phone. I've dropped my Atom several times from kitchen surface height and it's not broken so it's decent. 👍3 points -

I'm the same regarding hamidi. Something about him that I've never liked and you've summed it up in one of your words "loudmouth". He thinks he's Something else and as for this contraption he's selling he should be ashamed of himself. Not surprised to hear you say dinton has banned it, Simon who runs it doesn't allow any gimmicks on his waters and good to hear that many more waters have done the same.3 points -

I think for me my PB really comes down to the fish that mean the most to me. I try and enjoy all captures and I have a few favourites that I have caught over the years, the 17lb pond record was the one that made me become a proper carp angler I think. We had our tactics sussed and we slayed the bigger ones in that pond. We used to freeline dog biscuits right in the edge. Feeding off the smaller ones to create the frenzy, The 26lber I caught from the club lake all those years ago I prebaitied for 2 weeks and that taught me something I have used many times since. To the modern times my goal was a 30lber I nearly did that a few times and caught some cracking high 20s beating my pb a few times before my most recent one which completed that challenge and was a fish I really wanted in the album. That meant a lot but it seemed more fate than effort if that makes sense, i am always working at it week on week so it's not like it's zero effort but i didn't think I was building up to it, it just happened. But for me the fish that meant the most was probably this one a new pb at the time but it was not long after my dad passed away and it just meant so much at the time still does, I noticed someone else caught it a few weeks back and it just made me feel really happy to see it again. Fishing is just great, I love being able to go and relax regardless of if I catch or not, just being there is enough these days, but catching a few along the way makes it the special journey it is. Just enjoy the ride and challenge yourself as you go as you are the only person you need to be better than.2 points -
Chris recently said they try to get in every night. It's a full time job keeping them out. Seen them on one of my current waters and the fishing has not been the same this year unless its me but seeing tail damage on fish in snags and a fish has been found by another angler 👎1 point

Not been seen for a good while, got a mate on there who's switched on and he's not seen it either so doesn't look great. the 43 went many years ago, went missing just before the fences went up same as the big common next door. I had the 43, cracking fish such a shame would have gone onto being 50+ easy.1 point

A mate used 1 other week, was just curious about em, our club lake isn't hard, but it's not easy either, but 1 his rods had a "Twig" on and never even had a beep, it ejected on cast, the arms have to be PVA taped every time. No offence to anyone with em or wanting to try em, but every video now, I'm sick of seeing em.1 point -

Power bank??

I've been thinking solar as well. I have 3 battery power packs, only small although one is powerful enough to jump start a car, but with very bad phone signal on a 5 day/night trip, my phone just goes through battery life, and the 3 end up out of juice very quickly. I could recharge either the power packs or the phone and tablet in the car. Big worry for me is the cost of a solar unit. At my dad's mountain hytte in Norway we fitted solar panels to the roof simply to provide juice for mobiles. One big powerful solar rechargeable pack could be the way forward, with the smaller packs as backup.1 point -
Wow Highly that’s stressful times mate for you and your good Mrs. Got to totally agree with Elmo he put it very well. Keep us posted on developments 👍1 point

It's the Wife that needs a Medal, she's took full control of the Carer situation. I'm here now at my nans and so far the carers have not been since 9pm.last night, wife on with this now, also while at work. Luckily I'm off work all this week. My Sister chose to go out on the 🍻, thinking if everything was OK, when she knew it wasn't, she did try yesterday with the Washing, but we were behind her tidying up. She should know what to do as she works in a care home for her Job.1 point -

Mate well done for being the responsible one and organising everything, hope it becomes less stressful and more manageable soon but you've been a hero mate. Hard as it may be try not to be too hard on your family, if your sister is trying to help get her involved it will help you in the long run, we all make mistakes, let her make it up if she is trying. I would be fuming about the holiday too though. Hope he gets better soon and it all gets sorted. Keep venting on here if you need to mate, you got to let it out somewhere.1 point -

sorry i should have been a bit clearer, i meant i dont glue or wedge the sleeve on but if snagged the lead should drop. i dont have it set up to drop on every bite just if snagged and yes inline leads are good and i mostly use bags anyway. agree with the littering bit but i have a little magnet that i sometimes pop out as it picks up the swivel on most leads and i get a fair few from just in front of the bank as it seems most anglers lose them there, often come home with a few more than i took with me1 point

This one I think just under 36 but goes up to 39 nice fish out of respect I won't name the carp but it's the biggie out the little lake unless 43 is still in there. Gutted I'm not on there still it was the only lake I liked out the two I had a ticket for, really is a one off. https://youtu.be/K-wa4WsVGEY?si=hBXlyYeALJDqXUfd1 point

The twig?
kevtaylor reacted to carpepecheur for a topic
That hits the nail on the head IMHO. It is just another bolt lead technique. Traditionally the weight of the lead is relied upon to set the hook when the carp bolts. Before I started using the method I described earlier in this thread, I did a lot of experimenting using a rubber band and piece of bamboo skewer. The stick holding the rubber band was dislodged when the bait was moved and floated harmlessly to the surface. The rubber band contracted causing a sudden pulling on the bait. It proved to be far too unreliable in normal use but a learned a lot. What I believe happens is, the movement is not enough to actually set the hook. I believe (but cannot prove) that the sudden movement frightens the fish which then bolts setting the hook against the weight of the lead. Rather than cast it out backwards or hang heavy weights on to prove how strong and dangerous a twig device is. could I make a constructive suggestion? Why not replace the two plastic arms with sacrificial bamboo sticks which float harmfully away on a take? Personally, I will stick to my tried and tested system.1 point -

Problem is the elasticated Method feeder made it from match angling into carp fishing. It took some good anglers pointing out the risks to get the elastic removed on carp versions. I'm debating on Ali Hamidi, he's bugged me personally for years; the aggressive marketing, an article he wrote extrnding a trip and putting angling on a session and himself first over a close family members birthday, the Korda and now OMC loudmouth, as well as his programmes with his small person syndrome. 'Aggressive marketing', I don't like adverts at the best of times, I've gotten cynical over many claims from household brands, be that Flash, Listerine, or fishing tackle brands. One good thing does not make up for years of wrongs, and I won't go anywhere near the analogy used on the other site. Forgiveness for a small error may be given, but there are some no way no how.1 point -

You might as well add an inline castable weed rake to your set up if you are going to be using the twig. Or using breakaway leads with cable ties on, how an angling company cannot see its dangerous is beyond me. To me it seems the desire to create the next big thing wass more important than the actual thing.1 point -
The twig?

This twig thing sounds like a very complicated solution to a simple problem. I have been using a technique I which I call The Active Bolt Lead" for over 10 years now. Basically, it is just a large steel washer bashed onto a bomb shaped lead. You wind down against the lead put a good curve in the rod and the washer bites into the bottom. The slightest vertical lift from a fish dislodges the washer and the spring in the rod tip strikes the bite. I made a rather pathetic video of how it worked which was filmed in my swimming pool but it does show the general idea.1 point -
Is my spod mix the missing link?
kevtaylor reacted to elmoputney for a topic
Thanks for all the replies everyone The main one I can answer easily to is Nick as it is lake specific, the lake is a lot more pressured nowadays tbh and it's certainly different to when I first fished it, and they see a lot more bait probably mainly boilies, also I don't think there is as many tench and bream these days the Rudd seem to be the key nuisance. I think I've worked it out overnight and the answer is the maize I am using, the nuisance species must not be able to eat it so much so they are leaving it in favour of the other seeds and probably the boilies. My mix is 50% maize with a mix of seeds, maples, white peas, and a few other bits finished off with Molasses and a top secret garlic ingredient, I found in an animal feed place I'm now more convinced than ever it is the missing link and I am planning to do some bulk cooking and freezing 😂 Thanks guys, time for some mass prebaiting while no one is watching I think 🤔1 point -

Trying to find a legitimate reason for them. Doesn't appear to work with light leads, doesn't appear to be needed using a heavy lead. Appears to be something else that could snag up in weed. Oh My Cripes...1 point -
You will not belive the weekend I've had since Saturday 😓😓😓....Right, Saturday Morning we drove to Catterick (about 9am) 2hr (ish) to see Sister & Brother in law/kids, as they have moved into a new house. We arrived just after 11am all happy to see each other, had a brew got little settled, had a look round new house and went for some dinner. Around 1pm I git a phone call off my Dad saying My grandad has been rushed into Hospital, after the call it all comes to light he has been picking up, carrying heavy loads and going to the Tip and not asking anyone to help, resulting in him getting a Hernia, BUT in a few hours time my Dad (Grandads son) is going in holiday so we are really in limbo now.... I phoned back an hour or so later and asked for an update, he has been told he needs an operation as the Hernia is in a life threatening position, wrapped round his bowl. So we decided to drive back away from Catterick about 3pm (did plan to come home around 6pm). So, got back home sorted the Dog and Lad, went up to mi Mum n Dad's and had a chat to what is now happening ? At this point they say there still going in Holiday, My Head burst and what came out my mouth was a first for me towards my parents, think they were more shocked than surprised I'd said it. So we went around to my Nans to see how she was, now at this point, **** did hit the Fan, My Nan is FULLY DEPENDANT on my grandad due to her having a stroke years ago, can not walk or toilet or anything....this Dropped/Daunted on us. So at this point we contacted my Dad before they went away, told em what needed to happen and Care needs to be brought in for my Nan (this fell on me n wife), but all I got back was were going on holiday. So, we phoned the Hospital to get an update for my grandad and if he had the operation he would also need care for at least 6 weeks to recover, head nearly exploded then. So, I rang my sister to find out she already knows everything from mum n dad, so I asked her were is she and she had gone out on the 🍻🍻 with her boyfriend, so for a 2nd time my head/mouth verbally let rip. So, alot of Phone calls to Social Services, Domestic Care, Local Council all were made and we have got Emergency Care in for my Nan from Sunday Dinner Time (Assessment pending 1st). Assessment Team came and they would only do all the needs if it was all in 1 room, so we brought a single bed down to living room, komode for toileting, Wasing utensils. We then rang the hospital about my grandad and he was actually coming home (at this point we didn't know he discharged himself) because didn't want to leave my Nan on her own, spoke to Doctors and he physically cannot do anything to cause Strain on his boddy, he had to go back Monday (Yesterday) for his Operation.....on way home we told him what is happening and what is in place. So, we stayed the night Saturday, Sunday day....doing all the care needs needed for my nan, at this point my Sister still had no idea what was going on fully until about Tea Time, were she then "Tried" to help. Monday morning came and took my grandad back for 9am for his operation to be told after all his checks, it is not needed 😓😓, due to the rest he has put on his self. He has to go back in 2 weeks for another check up. So....we are keeping care in for my nan for a few weeks, 4 times a day for Domiciliary purposes. BUT, the point I'm making is that myself and wife have practically yackled on this on our own while my sister has been in the 🍻🍻 Saturday Sunday, and mi dad (nan son) has gone away on 10day holiday. Trying to do all this on a Bank Holiday weekend is literally physically & Mentally draining.0 points
