The "Dreaded" new reels question.......on a budget
jules007 replied to jules007's topic in Carp Fishing Tackle and Equipment
Im back at this search for a couple of reels, seems every time i find a reel that may be right, its out of stock, i am only looking at new as my very old DAM quick 850`s are looking right scruffy.....but they still work even though getting badly corroded now, doing great for 18 years old, i do wonder if shimano reels would still be going strong at this age and never been opened up to service -
fair to say progress has been good, infact this new split can custom rod is finished but i have to wait till varnish is fully dry before i get it, about a week, it looks superb and cant wait to fish with it on its namesake water
-
I use full Solar stainless kit both buzz bars are equal but at some point might look for a wider front
-
Im half with you on that, i find myself thinking i would like a wider front so tips are splayed out, but im tight so wont do it
-
go to your local poundland type shop and look at the low cost easy ready glass`s, i were varifocals but prefer reader glass`s for close up stuff try a pair and pick up a product with small print on label and just try different strength till it seems nice and right, and yes uncoated braid has a mind of its own
-
Have to say im not all that bothered for using them, prefer to use a pin for float fishing where possible, but good advice on the chenille, in a previous post on this thread with the carp and the speedia has the cane rod been restored by Rod Storey< he is the fine gent building my 1lb 2oz cane rod
-
I used one of my old 410A reels other week have to say did not enjoy it, line went behind bail plate i think my pair will be looking for a new home at some point
-
Very nice, lovely old school kit
-
Here is a teaser for the new split cane rod that is being built for me, hoping to have it by xmas, this is the near finished handle

Looking for that affordable solid pod
jules007 replied to The woodcutter's topic in Carp Fishing Tackle and Equipment
I tried a pod a good few years ago and just did not get on with it so now use Solar bank sticks with 2 rod cross bars, plain and simple it works for me -
lovely fish i never have tired of catching Perch and pleased to say my local fishery has just stocked an additional 150 Perch, they should grow quick on all the fry and small silver fish to go at
-
So having returned to carp fishing and finding my old rods were not up to job, i got Diawa 12ft rods but soon found them a bit long for the water i am fishing a lot of pegs have plenty of tree`s over hanging, so bought Wychwood 9ft 2.75 rods and sold the as new Diawa rods for what i paid

In a few weeks time i should have a rod shot with a difference, i commissioned a gentleman to build me a split can 1lb 2oz avon rod
-
This forced weight gain is just wrong, just a money making venture to put monster carp into lakes to pull the paying angler into trying for them, its not for me, i would take 30lb proper fish any day
-
the usual advice on bait is to choose a half decent one and stick with it, get the fish in your place you fish to start accepting it
-
Deano, welcome mate, good to have you on here
-
Yes i do have some collectable tackle Mitchell reels and a lot of centre pins even some of my floats from course fishing are old vintage. Also i agree about the lakes going quiet so my next trip out is on canal as we have some private pegs and target fish are perch, carp and Gudgeon
-
welcome back, im same as you having recently returned after something like 14 year break
-
Live bait like a small roach or similar sorts the big ones, and they can suck in a surprisingly large live bait, but it goes against the grain for me, i work on catch and release not catch and impale on even bigger hook, some might think it wrong to put a lob on hook (wife does) but i dont have a problem drowning worms
-
it fell to a good old fashioned lobworm fished on stick float set up at the time i had (and foolishly sold) a TFG Matt Hayes X1 river and stream 1lb avon rod and the big perch put a right bend in that classic rod
-
Yes Perch are a lovely fish, always thought if they grew to 25lb no one would fish for carp lol, im lucky enough to of caught a 4 1/4 lb perch, hell of a fish
-
Its hard to think, and makes me feel rather old that i used to fish this little river maybe 46 years ago but more to the point i used to err "poach" in the old stew pond this river flows through to catch eel, roach rudd and more important proper old wild carp and of course lots of Perch, those were happy days indeed

I used to use ESP Crystal but just cant get it now, shame, i tried a couple of lines and ended up using budget NGT camo line having done a few pull to break tests using digital latching scales it does seem to hold up to stated BS and is thinner in diameter than a lot of lines, can get bulk spools for about £9 posted, im now happy with this product
