Personally I would use a an uncoated braid, as it would be supple, you could leave a coated section at the lead end to act as an anti tangle sleeve, What type of hookbait and rig set up are you using? I would use a 4 or 6 hook probably. KD rigs work pretty well in a bag.

That's an Interesting idea, I've also been guilty of spending ages poncing up hookbaits, and actually quite often ones I think should be deadly don't catch anymore than the rest (sometimes less Infact) . I have got a tub of unflavoured proper jobs that was planning to flavour the stinky winky out of. I do think I catch more when I use my spod mix though which has loads of colours, I do think the garlic granules are a factor but maybe I've been overlooking the importance of the colour. You can also add why does plastic corn work so well. I think it is probably a lot to do with length of rig as much as the shot. And possibly lead arrangement too, I used inlines and 2" shorter rigs for my recent hauling trip, I don't think i am changing back to lead clips or helis anytime soon.

Yeah, I've even got some groundbait mix ready, but usually leave it at home to save carrying an extra bucket. Maybe next time.

It's comin home, it's coming, tackle shops coming home 😂

I wish I could be bothered to try the method again, I've got all the bits to do it, but never seem to get round to actually doing it.

Welcome back mate,I knew this day would come.

Might be a good product, but OMC do some terrible product names 😬

I always found that, so far must be well over a year or two old my Gardner g force is still igniting. That being said everytime I use it I do burn all my hand hair 😂
-
I had a similar thing with my partygrill last week I turned the gas up more and it went. But I've had it before on burners and just used a lighter.
-
I watched the frank Warwick video on it last night and they were saying the weighted hook beads wouldn't be as effective as they wouldn't move round the bend of the hook. Whereas a bit of hair and a shot would slide a bit.

I bought 50m of PVA mesh earlier.25mm and 38mm, I've just been clipping on small bags of pellets or 4 or 5 boilies to the hook, I've got a really thick matching glug I've never used so I'm going to tie a load up and just dip em before casting. I've also got some stick mix I could roll em in that after lol, be like casting out a KFC chicken leg 😂

Matching spod rods? Free spirit helical spod
elmoputney replied to elmoputney's topic in Carp Fishing Tackle and Equipment
Cheapest century I could find was £287 for a century spodding machine. I don't think Mrs Putney would be best pleased with me. I might just keep an eye out for a used harrison, century or free spirit one, I'm in no rush yet. Will see what turns up. -
I have been tinkering with shortening my rigs, since I watched that went from regulation 7" to about 4-5" I have also ditched lead clips recently and gone back to Inlines. I am not easily led though 🙄 I haven't gone full shot on the hook yet. 😂

9 This one was my daughters first 20lber, she cast the rod herself and dropped it just off some pads, I had gone up the track a bit to clip up my rod and it screamed off and she was playing it and shouting for me, was a fraught battle on the old trusty 7ft greys, she did really well and eventually I netted it for her, she took the photos to school and everyone was really impressed. She's not really fished since but has worked on her casting. She did try playing one on my rods last week but they are too big and heavy for her.

Rather than relying on liquids you could try adding some of this, i use 2 little scoops in my spod mix and it honks,it was my little secret lol, but it has done me really well for the last 2 years 😳

I've never owned a matching spod rod, Is there any advantage to buying one over say any other half decent spod rod? Whilst my wychwood is still going strong for now and does all I need. it has started to feel a little tired recently and it occasionally creeks af groans like probably most of us 😁, when you consider I've had 2 sets of rods since I had that and I do quite a lot of spodding, I'm thinking it might be my next upgrade. And might just go for the matching free spirit helical 12ft SPM rod as I am enjoying the new rods so far but I just wondered if there was an advantage in doing so? If anyone has used the SPM rod would like to hear comments also. Regards

I tried some korda and fox ones but tbh they are much of a muchness and it's not really the kicker that is the issue, I think the problem with the spinner is the lack of seperation between hookbait and hook tbh, the d rig kickers solve that issue, until this week I can't remember the last fish I lost tbh, but they are a small faff, I'm happy enough with the d rig kickers just need to get them ready in advance so I am not wasting time on the bank, much like I do my booms. That probably is the solution lol

I've bought a couple of new additions for my spinner rigs after recent burred points on the sharpened one I normally use, mainly when using wafters I might add. I also have found normal spinners can give you hook pulls, i relearnt that this week 😳 they are just less faffy when you want to chuck one together. ESP trig hammer XT and esp d rig kickers. These seem sharp and slightly stronger than the originals, The flex was my main concern with those tbh. And some korda longshank beaked, these have an aggressive eye angle and are beaked, they seem to fit well with the avid D rig kickers. My reason for the different kickers is I find the ESP ones are a tad fiddly as the bead end doesn't seem to have much of a hole so works best with a straight point hook, the avid one does have a hole in the bead end but can be prone to slightly moving. But actually seems quite snug on this hook. I would probably use both out the packet as they are pretty sharp, this would also save on rusting because I'm yet to find a product that really seems to stop rusty hooks on my lake.

I bought a thermocell backpacker in the end, the only time I got savaged was when I needed the bivvy light on, I'd taken my t shirt off and was trying to thread rig tubing after some carnage was also hot and sweaty, and they chose that time to get me. Although I don't feel that bitten so open fronted shelter + thermocell seems to work in normal Conditions I think, also the hooky pads off amazon seem to work better than the thermocell ones that came with it.

10 and 8 going on 14 i think 😬 It's worth starting off small, rods were tricky to use, a 3m whip is a good tool to start with and plenty of action, my youngest thinks fishing is boring but we convinced her to come. She claimed to not enjoy it but had loads of fun camping and messing with her sister, tablets and audiobooks are good tools for the times when you need to get stuff done, but my eldest seems to want to learn more, she now uses my baitrunner and 7ft greys rod sometimes, she gets it I think and always wants to come, she's happy just being there, I think what I am trying to say is try it and I don't think it's a bad thing, but they will either love it or not you can't force that. Good luck, Also when you really want to go but know your misses won't allow it having a kid onside is a good tool in your armoury 😎😉

Whilst that one was awaiting processing in the retainer, I had another bite, this one off the rod I moved and the only one not on a match the hatch wafter. (MTH Pop up 😊) lovely fish, look at that tail 21lb 1/2lb Somewhere in all this lot I managed to lose 3 to hook pulls and one with a boulder of weed that acted as a pivot. And finally at just before lunch I had another run from the banker spot came in like a dog on a lead until it saw the net, then it took forever having seen it for quite a while I thought it was one of the bigguns. Turns out it was 27lb 12oz. but again what a creature all ancient looking and a real solid beast of a fish. I did lose one while this was in the retainer. But I'm not complaining. 5 fish in a session is mega and getting to share it with your kids and having a real good time too was awesome, I usually fish alone and while I love it, it is nice to share the special moments along the way. Also lucky to have a photographer as I had forgotten my camera 😁

Then I had to wait till 10:30pm for the next action, after some more spods and prepping as well as I could I felt confident, we had an all day breakfast for tea, I heard what could only be described as a pair of idiots walking around the far bank shouting stuff, luckily the girls were asleep, and then just as they were close enough on the far bank my alarm went into a one toner and I was battling with a demon fish and getting heckled at the same time, they run off after never to be heard again. But after thinking it was a catfish for a long time I finally got it in after an issue with my left hand rod, it had done a 50yd run and back before I gained any control, I only got control when it got weeded up but I had to bite the other rod line and reconnect it to get it in the net. Anyway it was a cool one, 27 1/2lb and i had to wake up my daughter for the pics. She loved seeing it though. Then all was quiet after a late night sorting and redoing and a couple of doubts I topped up with the rest of my spod mix and redid my banker rod and moved one back alongside the shorter rod as it was a nice clean channel. I had made the girls breakfast and just served my own sausage and egg sangers, one bite and the middle rod went into meltdown. My daughter netted it about the 3rd time of asking, 27 1/2lb again. Tbc....

Gonna have to do this one in stages, but went for a 2 night trip with the kids and the dog, arrived at lunchtime after the usual struggle and then some, but luckily got in a lovely swim with plenty of space for our bivvies I had previous in this swim having fished it last time, although there were people fishing far side so I opted to come shorter, this was a good decision. And had 2 rods on it today. And one on my banker spot. Nothing happened the first night but I had done some good big baiting and had left some line free moments (mainly because I had forgotten cutlery and plates) got back from dog walking and shopping (dog friendly garden centre) and wanged in another 8 spods on each spot, and was quite surprised when it ripped off an hour Later in the afternoon, really scrapped hard this one due to its mega paddle. 22 1/2lb Tbc......

And now packed up lol just had a mental last 24 hours, report incoming. Well done Yonny some bangers there, I think I've just had a similar experience. Love it when a plan comes together.
