Well my finished her 3 weeks of radiotherapy today and everything is looking good, she has to wait another 6 weeks for the official all clear. But it's all looking positive. I'd like to thank everyone for their support and well wishes on the forum. Cheers Keith. 👍6 points -

New Carp Gear - Looking for advice

Personally I would avoid Sonik rods, the 50mm guides are awful. I have broken a few on the rods I got to test.2 points -

I would add shooting clothing brands to good bad weather gear, along with some military clothing. I use Hoggs of Fife trousers and jacket Try this https://www.hoggs.co.uk/mens/trousers/flexothane-4600-grn-bib-brace2 points -
From my personal experience you need to forget about carp companies, they don't know anything about bad weather gear. Look at the clothing the Boat Anglers use - predator and fly fishing, it HAS be be 100% waterproof and warm as there is no escaping the elements when your in the middle of an inland sea type reservoir. Expensive but buy once!2 points

I know it not a angling analogy but if you look at the attitude in this country to products on the black market you will see that a total ban cause more problems than the product itself when in a legal environment, most people in holland don't like Amsterdam, i don't like Amsterdam been once as an adult found real boring, but it does work. total bans don't do much to solve a problem just means society can blame an individual person thinking they have solved the issue by punishing the transgressor, it is a leftover from victorian era policing.2 points -

I don’t use it I said I like it lol IF I had to use that kind of lead arrangement I would use it but I wouldn’t cut the leg off so I could re use the clip We could pick it to pieces if We wanted to. even running rigs can loop and knot in the air (I have seen it done it so I know it happens)and create a death rig if not watched properly if we have to account for every type of angler on the bank. personally I wouldn’t use a separate piece for the tell tale I would just leave a long tag on the knot lol I’m a helicopter man myself lol1 point

It’s a good question If money is tight and you decide to change waters then 10ft may not be any good for you and you will have to buy again if money isn’t a problem and you can afford to chop and change as needed then maybe 10 will suit you I wouldn’t want to buy rods on line personally as the cheaper rod may feel better in the hand that the other one you mentioned1 point

All the daiwa rods and reels are good to use and reliable, sonik is another good brand a lot of the budget brands have upped their product range.1 point -

The nearest i have come to fishing a run rig is with inlines that come off the sleeve, it's not good in weedy water or at least i don't like it too many balls of weed on the line 10 foot in front of the fish that was on pine pool, i have found the heli works best in weed the line is better bow string tight and that looks awful. Always thought running rigs were for clear areas?1 point -

That works! Levi when he was young kept wanting to go fishing, so I bought him the gear. His first trip, just a couple of hours on a Sunday afternoon after dinner, I asked him how many fish he would catch. "10". He had a little roach after a few casts, caught a few more, then it went quiet, kept feeding, couple more, then got to 9 fish and went dead. I thought what the heck, got elastic in the pole, so put sweetcorn on, nothing, back to red maggot, and caught a lovely little linear, just as we were due to pack up. Perfect 10!1 point -

That’s the plan Nick . I’ve gone down the Middy route as though it’s not expensive you know it’s quality gear and won’t let us down . I went for the Battlezome whip but same sort of thing 👍🏻1 point -

Monster is lethal! My daughter was told not to drink them as the sheer amount of sugar screwed up her diabetes and blood sugar. Big Dave was drinking cans of Monster and started suffering fit's, seizures and his blood sugar levels have lead to diabetes. In fact he is the person I had to jump in the lake to save and prevent drowning, holding him afloat and giving CPR for 45minutes until Emergency Services arrived. I bought my youngest two children whips to start, until I was sure they were ready to deal with a reel. Full kit, I think they were both by Middy who do do a complete kit. https://www.middytackle.com/product.php?ProductID=1112 The advantage of a short whip is that they or you, can underarm flick it out, no big worry for casting. Both Lily and Levi started off like that catching small roach and perch. What we used to do was take the fishing gear down to the park lake, with them on their bikes. They would fish for a while, get bored, go for a bike around, fish some more. While they were cycling I was testing the gear to name sure it was good. Great fun catching a few fish with no pressure, then they'd see and want to catch, so you end up teaching them feeding and catching unhooking etc.1 point -
Awww come on mate you’re just making us look lazy 😳1 point

It is not the only way to stop people fishing with inappropriate setups Nick. There are countless fisheries that allow clips etc without issues. It is counterproductive to ban decent tackle because idiots aint using it right. Ban the idiots, not the gear. We can ban whatever we want but that doesn't stop idiots from being idiots which is the root cause of the problem. It is this mentality of banning the use of tackle and baits to fix the problem of idiots that sees fisheries ruined imo. You end up with everyone queuing up fishing running rigs on tubing with boilies because every other set up and bait is banned. But an idiot can still cast his running rig/tubing/boilie into someone else's swim or into the snags. Ergo the tackle/bait bans solve nothing. Imo banning tackle/baits to account for idiots is just an excuse for running a lazy fishery that can't be bothered to vet members, enforce rules, or bailiff effectively.1 point
