  1. I don't think I completely agree with that, I like my hookbait to stand out from my free offerings tbh, I work on the theory that my hookbait should be more inviting than the rest or stand out from the rest, I think this may also lead to quicker bites and not having to wait till all the bait is gone before it is taken, I don't necessarily mean over flavoured or boosted to within an inch of its life but different be that coloured or with An amino booster or goo, but it's rare I will match the hatch tbh and I usually always have something different on each rod, as I want to find out what might be working that day,

  3. They do indeed. Their homepage has boilies, and one basemix (about £110 for 10 kg). The webshop I frequent still has 4-5 of their base mixes. Other thsn that, Northern Baits has one or two mixes becoming available later this year (got their Krillers on the pre-sale). But advice could probably be had, at least.

  4. On Earith the only takes I got were on 'straight out of the bag' baits. I tried a hi-attract or soaked bait ( Nutramino and Multimino PPc) and various pop-ups, the carp refused to take them. It may be that I had prebaited so much the carp were accepting them 'au natural'. I really try to get the carp accepting my bait Don't get me wrong, I have caught on boosted baits, from the river, where the current might take down the attraction, yet rarely on a lake. The exception as said, is hi-attract pop-ups, oh and another, which was down to crayfish, but soaked wooden balls, soaked in the liquid food of my food bait. That same lake, I did also catch, crayfish free areas, on the food source bait. However you could not guarantee that is where the carp were, you always needed some cray proof baits in the bag. If you allowed your balls to dry out 😮😖 they would float again, so were kept in soak until use.

  7. Think I was 14 when I first took my dog fishing... 😂😉 My Shetland Sheepdog back than was very well behaved, she would just sit next to me, off the lead by the river. Sheltie's are very easy and well trained, heck they are sheepdogs, so can sit for ages. My Golden Retriever I had around 2003 was 2 years old, and loved water, but could be a pain if not on the lead. He did jump in a few times himself and pushed me in, although by 2010 he had calmed down but still needed a close eye on as he could wander off, even with his companion the Jack Russell/Highland Terrier cross about. Barnby would just go walk himself, while Douglas's the cross would stay close. Sky, my Siberian Husky was around 9months, but even now she is always on a long lead, she would run and run, and take her time coming back if at all...

  8. I don't. Exactly the same flavour levels for the sausages and round boilies. I use any flavour and essential oils at the lowest recommended level for food source baits. I also rarely use a boosted flavour hookbait when fishing bottom baits straight out of the bag over my food source bait, but I might if fishing a single hookbait on its own. If I do use a single high attract pop-up that is normally boosted flavour, the flavour level for a 1 egg hookbait mix, is what is recommended for a 6 egg normal mix, or I will be using a purchased pop-up. This is where I confuse the issue, as I often fish that hi-attract pop-up as the top bait on snowman set-ups, say Monster Crab or Squid and Octopus on top of a KMG bottom bait. I have a feeling it was Fred Wilton originally. I think Sugar based flavours like chocolate or maple, and flavours from fruit ester and from natural product based, can be used at higher levels than alkali or non-natural based chemical flavours. This may tie in with acidic flavours being able to be used at higher level There is a bit of an issue though as some chemicals, like iso-eugenol, come from natural sources like Cloves. If you are fishing effectively over your bait, I do not think that really there is any need to be using 'boosted' hookbaits. The carp will pick up the bait. I think it was a Ian Chilcott YouTube video who recently pointed out that. Boosted hookbaits may work better effectively as a single hookbait rather than over any freebies.

    Taking the Dog

I’ve got a 12 month collie, she didn’t take to fishing too well, she didn’t like being hemmed in a swim (they were “dugout” type swims at the bottom of a steep bank with a footpath running along the top) and got quite anxious - she’s a nervous dog anyway, she didn’t like other dogs walking along the path and staring down at her, I called the wife to come pick her up so she didn’t feel too stressed. She’s far better on the beach.

  10. Northey Park doesn't allow dogs apparently, although there are videos with a well known angler with his dog on there - seems it depends who you are. The owner didn't like me pointing that out lol - I didn't make his waiting list 😁

He has a point to a degree the flavour market is a very mixed bag these days, in years gone by the rule of thumb was as quoted but some of the flavours on the market do little or nothing and some hold some attractive qualties. Alkaline flavours seem to be able to be utilised at higher levels than a good acidic based flavour. JB's flavours are generally very good quality and are highly concentrated so his low levels that he suggests are warranted.

Why? Oh that's simple; I haven't a clue what I'm doing, that's why 😁 I've got a tub of hard hookers, one of wafters, and some mixed popups. Poking your nose in either tub will singe your nostril hairs; they're quite potent. So yeah, I was assuming that hi-attract bait was one of the first things to try, along with a boilie straight from the bag, and popups, and washed-outs were more for pressured and wary carp. Gods, it's an entire jungle of new things to learn.

Why does it have to be beefed up? Why not try a washed out or flavourless hookbait, it might just be more acceptable to a carp than a hi attract hookbait.

  20. well that was a weekend to forget i know one thing from here on in it's hot swims only or once i get a barrow I'm going mobile on that dog, just cant catch a break if it ain't dye going in its feed or for some unfathomable reason the sluice gates are open meaning at this time of year the lake temps drop back to near freezing for a day or two i know the dye don't effect the fish but still some days the water looks like a massive toilet blue has been chucked in in fact that's not a bad idea, sure get em moving out the going swims, going to be a completely different angler turning up from now on.

  21. I tend to work on the same recipe, but as well as circular balls, I also include some 'sausages' which I can cut down to discs or shorter lengths. The flavour release attraction and breakdown from the cut down sections is faster than from boiled balls

How much variation do you guys put in your baiting? Same recipe, but different colours and shapes, or a handful of different recipes? That is perhaps a moot point with the pressure on most venues, I guess, but for the waters with few enough anglers that "oh, it's that prat again, lets turn finnicky for a while" is a risk.

    Dogs and fishing

Since getting mine I've got right into dog training, I love it 😀 It's amazing having a dog willing to do and learn new stuff just for praise and treats lol. We train every day and love going on hikes. I wanted mine to be a carp dog but she is just too highly strung. She's a barker, does not like people getting close to the bivvy and just makes it hard fishing lakes so she has to stay at home lol. This is from a hike on dartmoor before all this started happening. Just hoping we can get out again after restrictions ease. Good luck with yours, hopefully you can get her on the bank one day!
