I've had a quick look and the gape seems the same on size 4 and 5 it's just a tiny bit shorter, I will take them to work tonight and try and get some measurements and see what the actual difference is but my initial findings are that If a size 5 fits it wouldn't be a lot worse to use, I can't decide if it's a thinner gauge though so want to check first

@elmoputney, PM me your address and I'll send these kickers over to you to try with the 5's mate. In parallel I'll get some XL's and try them with the 4's.

But if your line snaps this set up is not at all safe for the fish, which is what the OP was asking. Heli/chod set up is safest as long as your top bead comes free and the swivel of the hooklink can pass over whatever you used to stop the bead then a fish would just be left with the rig in its mouth. Running rigs you leave the line but no lead, same with drop off lead clips or inlines. Anything not dropping the lead is not safe for the fish and IMO irresponsible angling.

can't say i'm a fan of ridge monkey, everything they do just seems to be a copy that can be bought elsewhere cheaper so I swerve them the one thing i'm interested in buying this year is a baiting pole, i'm just waiting for some feedback on them first, i'm interested in the corus and nash ones if anyone has used them

Can’t get any more simple and versatile than a multi rig bud. Can be used with bottom baits/wafter/pop ups without changing the hook, or you can change the hook pattern if you want. being able to change the hook without cutting it off means there’s no excuse to not have a sharp hook on either. there is various connotations, I have used a stiff hinge multi rig for a few years, more complex to tie and tbh I have no idea if it’s made a difference to hooking ratio but I’ve caught enough to be happy that it has!

Nice one Chill, think we will be trying the Trent next autumn. It's nice not knowing what species could be on the other end and always the chance of a monster Pike. A 9lb Zed is impressive 👍
