elmoputney Posted March 28 Report Posted March 28 Anyone do this? I've been getting bored of wind knots in braid lately and was thinking I might try some mono with a shock leader, Thoughts please? Quote
jh92 Posted March 28 Report Posted March 28 Used to spomb on the reservoir with mono mate but was baiting a large area so accuracy didn't need to be spot on, I don't know by how much but the mono would stretch 👍 Wouldn't use it with a marker rod tho as you feel a lot more with braid, I've had to strip my gear down for my new water so opted for one rod as a spod/marker that's using braid. Took me a little while to get used to it but I prefer it now. As for wind knots ive been quite lucky, I used to get a few but now the braids been on there for a year or two so it's really bedded down, not sure if that's the reason why I don't really get them anymore though lol elmoputney 1 Quote

I've been getting bored of wind knots in braid lately and was thinking I might try some mono with a shock leader, Thoughts please? I was doing it for years, 15lb mono with 50lb Greased Weasel. Never had any problems, less wind knots. It does stop the occasional non opening of Spomb as the line stretches and the Spomb hits nose first rather than skidding. Only reason I went to braid is using one rod spodding and marker float/leading around. Braid is Angry fish 0.37mm 4x PE line with leader. I rarely get wind knots, but do occasionally, usually at the most inopportune time. Quote
B B Posted March 29 Report Posted March 29 Do you know what the furthest you’ll need to spod to ? Quote

Yeah you are all right it's probably not a good idea and I should probably just stick to using a braid as I use mine as a marker rod too 😂 I found the gardner spod braid better than the one I am using now. Anyone found a really good one that doesn't get too many wind knots. Thanks guys Edited March 29 by elmoputney Quote

The honest answer is the wind knots are usually my fault from reeling in and allowing slack line to go onto the spool. It's that slack coming off that comes off in a birds nest. Reel in slowly keeping tension reduces the wind knots, and strangely faster or higher geared reels allow the 'bounce' and slack. As an add, it is also the line I use for pike fishing, and I have had 4years out of it so far Quote

B B Posted March 29 Report Posted March 29 I’ve only used whiplash in the green .14 which I think is around 40lb that’s in 8 strand it fades in colour over the years but that doesn’t hurt the line. I used whiplash before it went over to 8 strand and that’s was just as good. j don’t bother to splash the reel will lake water I feel that only wets the surface coils of braid instead I under hand cast then a couple of casts further winding the tip under the water, I also put the tip under the water as I wind the spod in every time I cast Good luck with your choice 👍 elmoputney 1 Quote
emmcee Posted March 29 Report Posted March 29 I used braid on both marker and spod rod when carping and I use braid now for sea fishing. I only ever used whiplash whilst carping and did get occasional wind knots. Sea fishing I use a cheap braid off Ebay and never had a wind knot with it (spectra braid). Not as thin as whiplash mind but that's possibly the reason for no wind knots. I no doubt lose a bit of distance but I'd swap that for no wind knots and obviously I always wet the spool before any casting. elmoputney 1 Quote

I keep mentioning it, but I do use a 30lb Amnesia leader with it, and don't get crack-offs. I do quite frequently find Spombs and spods attached straight to the braid, so far it includes a Dot Spod, a small Spomb, medium Spomb and a few basic spods. Quote
elmoputney Posted March 29 Author Report Posted March 29 I went for 300yds of purple angryfish celebrity in 35lb for a tenner, I also bought 4 sweatbands for 4 quid off amazon that I can soak and leave on my spools to keep my line moist between sessions. Thanks guys emmcee 1 Quote
framey Posted March 30 Report Posted March 30 (edited) Wind knot is a fallacy it’s actually a bad cast knot lol.😂 I get them when fly fishing but I’m not the best caster in the world. dont get many coarse fishing as I tend to keep lines as tight as possible and found when line goes slack is when you get them. kevtaylor Posted Friday at 12:28 Report Posted Friday at 12:28 (edited) Yeah used to use 10lb diawa sensor with a heavy braid shock leader, worked well tbh, but as I only want to carry the one spod/marker rod combined I went onto braid straight through, smashes the clip hard though which can mean it doesn't open, whereas the mono stretches and the spod opens all the time - not as accurate though. I don't suffer wind knots - and I don't even wet the braid for the first chuck! 🤷♂️ Edited Friday at 12:29 by kevtaylor salokcinnodrog, elmoputney and jh92 3 Quote

I also use a 30lb Amnesia leader. I still get the occasional non opening, but that is when I tend to punch it rather than aiming high and dropping in. The Nash Dot Spod is supposed to open every cast, but I have found they seem to lack a bit of build quality (and class) and do appear cheap. They can also be a pain to push and click shut. jh92 1 Quote

I've got a knock off temu x spomb, opens at range pretty much every cast and but has issues with short range lol I've seen them airbombs before, I like the concept of them but I wonder how big the spread would actually be lol 2 hours ago, salokcinnodrog said: With braid and the Spomb you really want a straight drop down rather than 'skidding' it in as it hits the clip. I've got a horrible cross wind at the moment so as I cast out the midi x spomb I've been dropping the tip and to my side a little, it opened every time over 10 spombs, been fishing 9 wraps which is about a ft off an island and they all been pretty much on the money 👍🤣 Do you use the Amnesia leader on a dedicated apod rod or for spod/marker? I was using a Sonik Spod Marker Hybrid, but after rod rings losing liners I switched back to Century Big Bertha for the same job of leading around and the Spombing. I'm more confident in the Big Bertha for the weight of a full medium Spomb than the Sonik which didn't like big casts. I normally cast out and pull the rod tip to vertical or slightly backwards and as it hits the clip the rod pulls forward. That's almost exactly the distance I was fishing this week in a 20mph easterly, which was a 'cross tail' wind, coming at around 45⁰ over my left shoulder. That reminds me, I must give the Aerlex a dose of Rocket fuel, it developed a squeak this week on winding in. Means I will be cleaning up the 7HT's as well. Quote

You can adjust the spread depending how big you want it, my starting point was to set it 3 rod lengths short but if you want a closer spread use 2 rod lengths etc. Takes a bit of getting used too but if you want to be different to everyone else use an airbomb. I haven't seen anyone use one ever other than me 🤣 Quote

Was doing 3 times the amount of casts to get the baiting done 👎 Spod always opened with mono, hit clip, line stretches, spod opens every time 💥 Edited 20 hours ago by kevtaylor Quote
elmoputney Posted 19 hours ago Author Report Posted 19 hours ago Also if you are spombing within catapult range, I would always just use a pult, I've noticed carp on my water seem drawn to the sound of catapults they probably associate with freebies as people mainly use them for prebaiting with.
