  1. Hi guys.

I've just joined a new club with a water I'm very interested in, but they have a rule for that water that says 'no boilies & no nuts'. I'm not allowed to take tins to the water, so can use sweetcorn, but I'm looking for alternatives that will allow me to focus on the carp.

The lake is an old brick works and is very deep (30m/100ft) with an old building and machinery at the bottom, so I'm going to have to try and keep to the margins. It's going to be an interesting water to explore.

  2. I read their advice at https://help.ryanair.com/hc/en-gb/categories/12502999419409-Permitted-Items-On-Board#What items are prohibited on board and in Check-in Bags? And it looks like you should be ok with Ryanair.

Airport security may ask some questions until they find another fisherman.

There may be an issue with customs at the far end though. I know it's not food, but check the rules for your destination, otherwise it could get confiscated there.

  3. I don't understand those that fish without, yet spend loads on tackle and bait. A 3 rod license is the cost of a few kg of boilies, a couple days fishing at a commercial or something similar.

Then getting violent when caught, what did they hope to achieve? Absolute scum. Self entitled <censored>!

  4. I understand why this petition was created (catapults being used to attack animals), but it is certainly a sledge hammer to crack a peanut.

Whilst it is abhorrent that any animal is targeted by anyone, I'm glad that those in power recognise the importance of their use in a legitimate pass time.

Criminalise the action and enforce the penalties, not the tools. Get more police on the streets and get them out of their cars. I can't remember the last time I saw a bobby on the beat.

It's probably too late for the local police stations. There's been too many efficiency drives for the police to truly be able to crack down on antisocial & criminal behaviour in towns, let alone in the countryside.

okay its Warwick baits, not gonna complain as the main man has been through a bad patch this last 6 weeks, and he dont need whinging winnie going on at him, will put it down to experience but will look for a different product from a different comany

I wouldn't be worried about contacting them about the issue. I'm sure they'll be more keen to know about potential problems ASAP than getting upset.

How a company deals with issues tells you what they are like and whether you should support them in the future. Give them a chance to put it right.

  6. Some fox rage gloves, a selection of halibut pellets from 3mm to 30mm and some rig tubing.

My son who's never really shown an interest in fishing want to catch a catfish. The nearest local for catfish requires you to have gloves and tubing if fishing for cats, so I'll give these a go.

  7. I finished my couple of days with a blank unfortunately, but it just reminded me what a loss the place is.

The jungle on the old lake was supposed to be fantastic for tench. That was the part that was only accessible by boat.

I also had some really nice tench and bream whilst fishing for carp on the old lake.

Apparently the old lake's been netted and most of the specimen fish have been removed and the new owners have plans to use it as a retreat for people who have social issues. They don't need to run it as a fishery.

I think it's unlikely fishing will ever return there now. So sad, but so many great memories.

  8. Hi all.

Friday is the last possible day for fishing at Bury Hill in Surrey. It's such a sad loss to the local fishing scene. The old lake closed to fishing a few years ago when the old boat house was sold off and the place became members only. Now the last day is almost upon us, does anyone else have any memories to share of this significant venue.

I'm lucky to be able to book on for 36 hours from tomorrow morning, so I'll have one last crack at temple.

I've always blanked on temple so far, but had my PB (32lb 10oz) out of the old lake back in May 2013, beating my previous best of 12lb by a big margin.

Hopefully something will be arranged for fishing in the future, but who knows.

    It will be missed.

  9. Sorry to be facetious, but coated braid hooklinks. Can you be a little more specific in what you're after?

Are you after suggestions on extra supple coated braid hooklinks?

Do they allow mono hooklinks? I'm not sure I've ever seen a fishery ban mono  or similar style hooklinks, but there's a first time for everything.

  10. Personally, I'm currently using the Daiwa Crosscast EXT 3.5lb 10ft rods. Previously I was using some Greys Prodigy Plus 2.75lb 12ft rods. They are both through action rods and play fish really nicely.

The one big difference I notice between the 2 sets of rods with keeping everything else the same is the casting distance. I've sure I've lost a good percentage of my casting distance. I'm sure I used to be able to hit around 100yds pretty easily with the 12ft rods, but with the 10ft rods, I feel that I'm struggling to hit 80yds.

That's the trade off. The big benefit of the shorter rods is that they are much easier to transport. I because the bottom section of the rods are telescopic, the full length of the Crosscasts is less than the width of my car. I can lay them across the back seat rather than having to load them in from the back and thread them between seats etc. This also means I can take them on holiday a lot easier with a full car.

If you're happy with the limited range or can use a bait boat or similar with them, the shorter rods would be great, but if you're fishing a larger water and need the casting distance, you'll need the longer rods. Different tools for different jobs and scenarios.

  11. Hi all,

I don't know if you have seen, but this year seems to have been a bad year for KHV. Currently the only control notices in force have all been issued this year.

Controls of fish and shellfish diseases in England and Wales - GOV.UK (www.gov.uk)

I know of another club lake not listed that has had an initial designation placed on it and has fishing banned until KHV has been confirmed or ruled out.

What is it about this year that has caused such a resurgence when it looks like it had almost disappeared?

  12. Hi all,

What stiff boom materials do you use? I'm looking for something that will 'reset' a rig if picked up and dropped. For hooklinks (blowback, slip-d etc), I normally use ESP Tungsten Loaded (x-stiff), but I find this a bit soft for what I'm after. I'm trying out the ESP Stiff Rig hooklink, however it's so stiff and thick that tying knots well can be a challenge. Ideally, I'm looking for something in between. What would you recommend?

  13. The BBC forecast went horribly wrong when they changed from using the met office to some commercial organisation. TBH, I've almost given up with BBC. I was a staunch supporter until fairly recently, but they seem irrelevant to me now and more so as time goes on.

I've been using AccuWeather for years and it seems to be fairly reliable. What is interesting is their rain forecaster which tells you when rain is due to start/stop. It was almost spot on yesterday.

Sadly them, Greys and Hardy being bought up and combined under the Pure Fishing banner meant that the names are in existence, but almost defunct.

Pure only wanted them for the fly fishing business which shows on the current websites and product lines. On their brands page they only list greys, Hardy's and JRC, Chub isnt even listed.

I have a Hardy's marksman supero 11ft 6 float that is fantastic. I remember reading they were testing out some carp rods at one point. They had a sample on display at a trade show or similar in europe and someone stole it. Those could have been interesting.

What about Efgeeco? They were big in the 80s here in the UK weren't they? I think my dad still has and uses some bait boxes from them.

  16. Tbh, I think yesterday was a bit of an extreme event. Biblical feels like a good description. I would upload a video, but I can't on here. It was that extreme I can see the water temp dropping by a degree or 2. The bailif had to put the aerators on after to prevent an oxygen crash.

Most people had standing water in their swims as a result. I think the poor guy in the swim next to me had an inch or 2 and would have been wading to get to his rods for a while.

When I left about 3 hours later there were still significant puddles around the fishery.

Good advice about the groundsheets there, but I suspect even that would have failed me. I have a fox frontier XD, but didn't use the groundsheets so that could have significantly improved matters.

I was thinking about the height thing during and after the rain, but the banks where I was are generally pretty level. I had a few spots inside that stayed generally dry, so was ok and could move things around.

  17. So, I've just been out in a deluge. Hail, thunder, lightning and everything. Whilst my bivvy coped brilliantly, the issue I had was water coming in under the sides. Thankfully I'm off home later today, but how do you keep your kit dry in those types of conditions? Is there something that will allow you to raise you kit 1-2 inches off the floor to stop the bottom getting soaked?
