  1. Has anyone here used one before? I'm thinking of getting a pair of 9ft 2.75lb t/c for the river. At the moment you can get them on eBay for about £40 each. Are they worth the money? Any info would be great thanks

I have 2 of these. I only use them whilst travelling. For 2.75lb rods, and compared to my Greys Prodigy plus 2.75lb rods, they feel like broomsticks. I've not any significant fish on them yet and probably never will.

What I like about them is that they can sit across my boot made up ready to go without any seats down or having to go diagonally. Makes getting them into the car when going camping etc. a much easier sell to the mrs. :)

  2. I've just checked their fishing brochure. https://www.silvermere-golf.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2013/11/Silvermere-Fishing-Brochure-2015_16.pdf It's last years, but it's saying £225 for the June to March opening times they have.

If you're looking at Walton angling club, Painshill Park has a lot of weed. There are apparently some nice fish in there, but it's not an easy water.

It's a shame about the Barwell Lake. Sounds like the current syndicate leadership are keeping as a clique. I'd love to find out who runs the waiting list and get on there as a start.

  3. ive just been on google earth, its not to far, got a few lakes available. i think i may have just found a new home :P

    many thanks Nick!

Which day ticket have you been fishing? You're that close to me we should arrange a social. :)

If you're Kingston way, try looking at silver mere golf club. They have a lake of a few acres which is syndicated, but is next to a road. There's also Walton angling society. They have rights to painshill park in Cobham and one other water.

Both of those have decent fish in from what I've heard. As for Barwell lake, from what I've heard, even if you get your name down, unless you know a member and get an invite to try out, you'll never get on there. Andy in Surbiton angling might be able to get you the contact for there if you want to try.

Have you looked at the Colne valley?

  4. Lol, think you Southerners are more used to our slithery friends than I would be for certain. Never seen a snake in the wild in nearly 50 years ,blimey I'm bad enough with rats you can keep your snakes thank you very much.

I was fishing a local club lake near me a few years ago. It's in the middle of a nice housing estate, so no night fishing.

In the middle of the day, I saw something moving across the water. Initially, I thought it was a small rat, but the shape wasn't right. As it swam past my swim, no further than 5m out, I could clearly see that it was a snake. Not sure if it was grass or adder, but I suspect it was the latter.

My parents had an adder resident in their garden years ago. They're not really a problem to be honest. I would just recommend that you avoid treading on them. Apparently they don't like it.

  5.

Going onto line, and tackle brands 'updating' a make of line, it amuses me when a manufacturer says that the newer version has 2% less stretch than last years line.

If last years version has 20% stretch (which is around what most mono's, between 15-25% do), then 2% is just 18%, and not really a significant difference.

I still say many monos are overrated, 18lb line being sold as a 15lb to make it sound better; a 15lb line should have a diameter around 0.35mm, not the 0.38-0.4mm that many brands do.

Saying that, some makes are catching on!

A larger diameter will also reduce your casting distance, so you may need to consider diameter in some cases over breaking strain.

If they are saying 2% less stretch, to.me, I would read that as 2% of the 20%, so reduction of 0.4%. Is that really much of a difference.

It's all playing with numbers. As they say 'there's lies, damn lies and statistics', just ask any politician. It's the same with marketing.

  6. Hi peeps,

Anyone using their Freefall Micro Braided Tube ?

Just got me a couple of packs as the line i'm currently using refused to thread down standard internal bore stuff i have.

Looks really good for something a simple as tube with an inner stainless core that allows for easier threading and after trying the Big Game in 20lb i can confirm it's a good threader :)

Funny thing is whilst parting me my money in my local Tackle shop a random guy in there said you can cut it down if you like, But i replied it clearly states on the packet

"This product has been custom made in 1mtr lengths. This product cannot be cut down into smaller lengths without loss of performance"

The bloke then told me he used to work for this company but the Chinese brought them out and they print any ol **** on the packets !

Now i think the length is just right but wonder what performance loss they are indicating ?

I've got some of this and the back of mine states:

Can be cut with sharp scissors

What's put me off using it is that it's a coil of steel on the inside. It should be nice and heavy when on the lake bead, BUT if that's a coil of steel wire on the inside, surely the cut ends will be fairly sharp and could cause serious line damage.

What I've gone for instead is the Korda Dark Matter and got myself the Nash Tube Threader. Basically a twisted long thin steel wire with a loop at the end.

  7. Carp.com strikes again with a vast range of surprising ways and means :)

Foil and Wool, wow, who'd of thought to cut foil and wool to see if it would sharpen their cutting device

I was making some hobo stoves with the scouts out of drinks cans and noticed that it got easier to cut the cans with the scissors the more cans we had cut and how sharp the scissors were after.

Only looked it up after. [emoji1]

  8. I've got a pair of the Matrix stage stands. Great pieces of kit. The only downside is that you've got to take a screwdriver with you. The supplied screw is a standard Philips.

If that's really too much of a hassle for you, there's the Jag stage bite. Very nicely engineered and one part works as a screwdriver, BUT, its £60+ for a pair. They supply a torx bit and a torx headed screw. These will probably work better overall, but I can imagine replacement screws being challenging to source. The bit looked like a standard screwdriver bit, so can probably be swapped out for a Philips or flat head bit of you want.

Can't comment on the others but would expect them to be similar to the Matrix.

  9. I've got the Chub Vantage 3 rod plus. Comes with 3 individual sleeves and you can buy extras. They can vary from 11.6 ft to 12.6ft rods. (Get them asap if you go for this and want them) It will take a maximum of 5. Well made and each rod is very well protected.

I've got my 3 rods, a spod rod and a float rod all made up plus my brolly system.

Very nice bit of kit. Not sure how much longer they'll be doing it for. They released both this an the 5 star system back in 2013, so will probably be looking to replace it in the next year or 2.

Is it fashion or planned obsolesence?

  10. Fished there once years ago. Nice little fishery, but seemed to mostly cater for the pleasure/match crowd.

It wasn't a very picturesque place when I visited though, lots of bare earth as if they'd been doing some major remodelling. It may have improved though.

  11. Scary, yes but it could have an interesting positive outcome for others elsewhere.

Firstly, if the fish are causing as much damage as is being reported to the local ecology, then the local government has to act in some way. Imagine if this was back here and the invasive species was topmouth gudgeon or Japanese Knotweed to name a couple of current threats we currently face. For both of these, we are looking at several ways of tackling them including, with Japanese Knotweed, the release of Japanese bugs that feed exclusively on the Japanese Knotweed. How is this any different to the Australian government releasing KHV?

Secondly, I am pretty sure that when there have been outbreaks here of KHV, there have been survivors of the virus, just like there have been survivors of ebola in Africa. The net effect of this could result in a population of Carp that is immune to KHV, purely down to the numbers involved. This population could then be a source population that we could use to populate local waters with KHV resistant fish. Not what the Australian government intends or wants, but look at what's happening with anti-biotics.

  12. Hi guys.

I'm looking for your thoughts on either the trakker or advanta power stove(angling direct).

They're made by a Chinese company called Fire Maple and are a re-branded FMS-100T. They can also be known as the King Kong. These guys also make the trakker and fox kettles and some of their pots and pans. You can't get their stuff in the UK without shipping from China or HK.

I've seen one in a shop and it had a loose pan support is this normal or should they all be rigid once the feet are extended?

I went for the Angling Direct power stove. Exactly the same as the Trakker but £10 cheaper, plus it comes with a hard case instead of a drawstring bag.
  13. Hi guys.

Me and the family are looking to go camping at 1/2 term and are looking for suggestions.

Obviously I'm looking for some carp fishing. Somewhere nice and peaceful with nice views that allows night fishing. [emoji6]

We have a large bungalow style tent. Flat, level pitches are almost essential. We would like electric hookup if possible. The Mrs wants decent toilets/showers (definitely not chemical loos). Somewhere to keep the kids amused (preferably not arcade games) would also be good.

I've seen fir tree farm in warmington online. Has anyone been there before/ know what the fishing is like?
