Matt, have you seen it on Google Earth? It's got to be an old estate lake, the road leading near it is called Castle Lane and G.E. shows the remains of a very large building, overlooking the lake. The Castle remains, maybe? I've driven past there many times and always slowed to look, like you do. If you should find out if we can fish it please let me know. Ian

Martyn, you're right about Merrington. I understand that it was stocked with carp from Wellington Park, a fishery known for it's immaculate but wary fish. I've fished there on several occasions and every fish I've seen or caught has been in perfect condition. There's a resident Barn Owl that's quite tame and will forage close by if you're quiet. Nice, peaceful place. Ian

Mike, have you considered Merrington Fishery? It's a very tranquil place to be and while it's not a runs water, when you do catch it's worth the effort. It's near Bomere Heath in Shropshire. Google it, mate. And use lobworms for bait. Trust me. Ian

Mutilated is the perfect adjective when related to the fish at this money-making machine that passes as a fishery. I fished there once. After a hour I'd caught some fish and ALL looked like mutants. What a cracking weekend in great surroundings and even better company. To sit watching Red Kites, Kestrels and other assorted predatory birds plying their craft was worth the price of admission. Hands up, I caught nothing. Andy52 had several good fish, all pristine and beautifully scaled. Stoogi and Hopefull had one each. Over riding thought is that this is one lovely place to be. Second thought is that I shall be going back there, soonest. Third thought is that I'm still in recovery from the sheer laughter involved in fishing with these people. Blakemere? I commend it to you. My son's had some good fish using it, he frequently takes some with him. I also frequently take some but ALWAYS eat it myself. It's too nice for fish. Ian

The Great Ouse, immediately south of central St Neots. There's a large public park with a good stretch of bank available. I was there during the close season so couldn't try for the carp I watched casually mooching right in the margin, showing no fear of me or my dogs. I'm going back there this year. After June 16th.
