good carp lake with shore side accomadation
welder replied to littleboglough's topic in UK Venues and Where to Fish
There are quite a few. One that I've fished at is Milton Pools, near Oxford. Not exactly log cabins but timber huts which are dry and, apparently, vermin free. I've not used them, prefer the STi 2-man bivvy. Milton is a pleasant place to fish despite being right beside the M40. Ian -

A couple of nights in the midlands!! any recommendations?

You're right about the matches! The lake owner, Nigel Harrhy(?) is/was something of a match fishing star, I'm told. I'm also told that several hundred good size carp were stocked into the water from one of BW's reservoirs that was being drained for maintenance a couple of years back. I used to fish there when it was "wild". Not owned or maintained, just there, so to speak. Had a few pretty carp, best maybe 15-18lb and some cracking tench. That was a while back, though. The money people took over when the golf course got built and the lake became a commodity. Ian -
Just to add to what Jez said about worms on the hair, he advised me to try them and within hours of doing so I was into a good fish, my first Merrington carp, in fact. The place could never be described as a runs water but encourages and rewards a thoughtful approach. Strange maybe, but I enjoy fishing there and knowing that if I catch, I've worked for it. One more point, don't ignore the close margin, especially at night. Ian

Taz, do you mean Barston, near the NEC? I don't know of a Bardon and it's my local area Ian -
A good summary. Why would you bother? Ian

You could try Lavender Hall Farm near Balsall Common or go onto www.Fisheries.co.uk Loads on there and suitable, helpful information. Enjoy your fishing. Ian -
Blackgreaves Lane, Lea Marston. It's true, the most recently excavated pool is a featureless, unattractive place. However, a little further up the sloping field is the old original farm pool which at least looks interesting except that there are high power electricity cables suspended a few feet above your head! Instant death is the expression that comes to mind. In summary, don't bother. Ian

Thats exactly what was supplied to you if you had a look at the link Like I said, I only copied and pasted what was already there for you - amazing what information you can get if you put a bit of effort in - in this case, two clicks of a mouse button That's the point I was trying to make, Nige. Sorry if it sounded like I was dissing you. Ian

Don't panic! Most of the comments on this thread are too old to be relevant. Example, mach3 (malc) has, since his condemning post, landed a cracking 29lb 14oz carp from there in the teeth of a serious storm. I was there. The storm WAS serious, the fish WAS cracking. The comments about the lack of fish caught at socials held there are no longer accurate, you have only got to refer to the threads covering the several recent socials and mini-socials held there to realise that there are some good fish to be had. Indeed, our esteemed administrater Nick, had a fish around 26lb, if memory serves, at the Grumpy Old Gits bash. I've since had fish to 16lb 8oz and 12lb 13 oz at relaxed gatherings there. To all considering fishing there soonish, be aware that we are close to/amongst spawning time and that djiq's comment about "puss" may have been mistaken for spawning milt. Ian

Joe, If you can you should go midweek, it's getting very busy at weekends. Ian How busy ian? i wsas thinking of doing sat night and sunday night? theres 2 of us, will it be that busy that we will struggle for pegs next to each other? Thanks Joe, two approaches. Either get there serious early and claim the swims you want or arrive later and hope that the swims you'd prefer are occupied by day anglers who will vacate and allow you to move in for your overnighters. I wish you luck, regardless. Ian

Also, It's nice to note that I appear to live in the Mildlands....presumably as opposed to the Wildlands. I thought I lived in the Midlands but, hey, what do I know? I'm only 60. Ian

Which is the only water in the West Midlands? Ian

Joe, I agree that it's a pretty place to be, I would describe it as a pool rather than a lake. It started life as an irrigation pool serving a potato/vegetable farm and became a small fishery when commerce overtook farming. I'm aware that you had an affinity with the place but life goes on, mate. Ian

Some people are beyond help. I tried my best, as did Carl. Oh well. Ian

Jason, I have to agree about the duckpond thing. As I understand it, it's now owned by a private individual who allows family and friends to fish it. To be honest, they are welcome to it. Ian
-
Agreed. It's unusual but doesn't have enough redeeming features to counter the aggravation of simply going fishing there. Shame, as I used to like them scruffy black goats and Llamas left over from when it was also a wildlife reserve......like I said, unusual................. Ian

Yes, there's Devon, Cornwall, Worcestershire and Wigan. Ian

Transitman, was your final line deliberate? "It goes downhill from there." EVERYTHING at Shatterford goes downhill if you let it go. The whole site is at 45 degrees from horizontal, except the drive from the gates up to the road. That's nearer to vertical! They could replace the tackle shop with a vehicle workshop specialising in clutch and brake replacement. If you suffer from vertigo fish elsewhere or take abseiling gear. I rather like the place, as it goes. It's different, at least. And once you've got your breath back, the views are panoramic, or do I mean paramedic? Ian
