Whats the point in a bait runner reel?
dalthegooner and 2 others reacted to Gazlaaar for a topic
Anyway What happened to just buying something because you like it, I don't get this having to have a reason for every purchase, if you like it, buy it3 points -
Nobody is letting anything run, it's no different than setting a front drag to do the same job as a bait runner, I just prefer a bait runner,3 points

anyone who can not do exactly that on a bait runner/free spool reel needs to get lessons in how to set up their kit IMO of course as to the second part of the statement, i have seen people loosing off the front drag to do the same thing, one chap loosened it so much that on the take his spool flew off. so have a good think and then tell me that there is no point in incorporating a safety feature that takes noddys out of the equation. no offence intended of course2 points

Apologies, perhaps a little abrupt. No offence meant. It's just that saying there's no point in free spool reels is, to me, akin to the sleeping while fishing, discussion. Also opening with things like "there's no point" and questioning them from a fish safety POV is a tad argumentative. Again, genuinely no offence meant.2 points -

There is no difference between bait runners and front drag systems. Both can be adjusted from peeling line off to barely able to turn. The only difference is that a bait runner switches between 2 different pre set drag settings with the turn of a handle, where as a front drag is a broad manual adjustment. What you are trying to say, is that you see no point in using a free spool function at all when carp fishing, and to that I would say, firstly it depends on the situation, and secondly there are enough deliberately argumentative and contentious posts on this forum as it is, without questioning if a free spool function, which in various forms is as old as the invention of the reel itself, is worth using or not when carp fishing, or if it may be bad for the fish. Ask yourself this; when you hook a fish, do you want the fish to be able to choose for itself how much pressure and tension it can put on your system before you pick the rod up, or do you want some control over this? I can think of many fishing situations where everything from practically no resistance, to fully locked up would be preferable.2 points -
The reels people use for angling aren't all designed with carp in mind. Predators being a prime example where resistance in your setup can cause them to drop the bait. Bait runners have been adopted by carp anglers but it's not the style of fishing they were originally designed for. Sent from my SM-G900F using Tapatalk2 points

Is it classed as bad angling to have the clutch loose when Carp fishing??? I never have it tight( if not on snags) but wouldn't say its super loose either. In all the years I'v carp fished I'v only ever lost one fish to snags and that was because it kitted on a leadclip into some reeds to my left without a beep If i had a boat I'd feed it but that wasn't allowed and has it was during my chemo I wasn't chancing a swim to free it, so cut the line and listened to it thrash about all night till morning when I'm sure ( and still hope ) it dragged the line free and out to open water or dumped the hook. On Barnwell I fished up to the reeds with running rigs and untight clutch and all the takes came away to open water ,my mate fished the same spots with leadclips and all his takes tried to bury into them1 point

Do you honestly think there is a difference between the two ? Can you not just let a front spool run & run ? Really don't get the logic behind your thinking on this one Phil .1 point -

If you actually read it properly it states i see people with them letting fish run for the sake of it which i don't agree with, then it states i believe it leads to fish loses etc. Some people have shown me they can be used responsibly but i still don't see it, if you like using them over front drag then great. If someone who does let it run for fun reads it, it may make them think about fish and snags. Sent from my P9000 using Tapatalk1 point -

I guess Bait runners are for Noddys and us really good mega anglers use Big pits . I have Bait runners and used many years ago, then i could not imagine ever using anything else , Big pits seemed to much faffing around , i now have Big pits and have been using them for years and now could not imagine using bait runners again. They are both as good as one another and do the same job equally as well, IMO its just personal choice.1 point -
If you had adopted that train of thought to begin with i imagine the post wouldn't now exist1 point

I have both . After using a free spool facility it took me ages to get used to my Big Pits . When I used free spool the other week it felt strange too . I prefer my big pits but yes , horses for courses I Spose and a place for everything . I think beginners tend to get em cos they may seem easier as the fish is usually already hooked . More experienced all round anglers maybe don't consider they need bait runners ? Once again . Each to his own .1 point -

What you describe is the incorrect use of a baitrunner, usually by novice anglers. Having the baitrunner set so loose that yards and yards of line are taken with no resistance before the rod is picked up is just daft. Unless fishing extremely close in, the baitrunner should yeild line but not so loose as you let the carp run for miles. it should yield line 'begrudgingly'. During the day when you are sat near the rods and awake, there is no need to yield much line at all...1 point -
my fishing is not all about sitting on my rods, tensed over and getting stressed over every little twitch of the indicators, its about relaxing and unwinding. i dont knowingly fish snags either, for the most part when static i fish open water in the day and margins at night so yes i do rely on my bait runner to stop my rods going in. but then, thats just me1 point

Bait runners are brilliant, not just for fishing but for a few applications, some people get on with front drag systems some people get on with rear systems. I use mine quite a lot, when markering it's quite handy just to clip open the baitrunner and pace out line, I presume it's just as easy with a front drag, I like em, doesn't make me lazy, some people like BMW's some like AUDI's, I've always found faffing around with a front drag a pain, a simple half wind of the handle and your into your fish.1 point

The systems have the same point they do the same job . My local water got really weedy last year , I was fishing over the back of it . I found on takes going away from me picking up the rod & letting the fish run just far enough away from the bank of weed ,then lifting into it far better than pulling them straight into the thick weed while there still low in the water . If they decided not to head for the weed didn't see the point in pulling them straight back towards it an encourage them to do so . Seemed to work for me Phil .1 point -

Personally don't see any difference between the two systems, both are adjustable. There are some fishing situations where I would let the fish run away from me a bit longer. But thats more about knowing your lake subsurface.1 point -

Hmmm. See I have baitrunners and I used to really struggle to understand the logic of bigpits where you're having to 'tighten up' manually. Now I would happily make the switch if I had the spare pennys. With my current baitrunners don't forget the drag is adjustable still, so I have mine set pretty firm most of the time. Then my regular drag is set so when the switch happens if the fish goes for it I don't have my arm pulled off it can take line. But I guess I sort of agree with you but just because of habit I think when I do switch it'll feel wierd for a while. Sent from my HTC 10 using Tapatalk1 point -
Tubing - the perfect set up.

No leader no tubing . Unless there's a chance of being cut off on obvious snags like mussels etc.Rig concealment is difficult enough without advertising you are there with a length of blooming great tubing1 point
