Old skool tackle

Any one on here use old school gear, i had a rummage in the loft and got my old Mitchell 410A reels down, i was expecting them to have suffered being stored for so long, but to my surprise they work sweet and smooth and the overall condition is way better then i hoped, these reels along with the older 300 reels were the start of carp fishing reels, and this pair are lovely to say they are close to 50 years old

You could do a set of 3 for about £100 but you would be buying each reel separate on ebay also you need to make sure bail arm is healthy and working as it should, but they are easy to service and spares are still about, of course it was the 300 that Richard Walker caught the 44lb record carp

Just took delivery of a pair o' new banksticks..😍 the optonics look nifty on em

I have a trio of 400 and 300 Mitchells,  2 of em with the Boomerang anti reverse levers, the other a later version

I'm looking into a pair of cane buzz bars.. a chap I know has said he is going to have a dabble at a pair... now't like going sustainable is there...???

Walker's Mitchell was a half bail... quite expensive nowadays in good nick

All I fish with nowadays... cane, pins old school coffee grinders...

My mate Bruce is forever scouring ebay for Mitchell reels, and he has a large box of spare parts from beyond economical repair reels, and a large display case of reels. 

He repaired and repainted one of my old Mitchell's where the rotor goes anti-clockwise so reels in 'backwards'. 

My view is a reel is to be used, so it is on one of my chub stalking rods.

I used one of my old 410A reels other week have to say did not enjoy it, line went behind bail plate i think my pair will be looking for a new home at some point

The later Mitchell's had a strip of red chenille around the base of the spool to stop this happening... it wears away with age, you could probably replicate it with some fly tying chenille glued in place

Have to say im not all that bothered for using them, prefer to use a pin for float fishing where possible, but good advice on the chenille, in a previous post on this thread with the carp and the speedia has the cane rod been restored by Rod Storey< he is the fine gent building my 1lb 2oz cane rod

Rod is doing a Martinez and Bird Avon as I type... the Sharpe with the Speedia was rebuilt by Walter Sewell, I think he retired a while back he did a few of mine... a couple of named rods plus a few un named repurpose jobs... a fine builder... Rod had rebuilt quite a few projects for me... including several cane Roach poles... I'll be fishing with him in Feb and taking delivery of 3 rods and a pole at the same time.

My new to me custom split cane rod is now in the postal system and on its way to me, i have never used a cane rod so this is going to be a whole new experience for me, i plan to christen it on its name sake water, the Calder an Hebble navigation canal

little update on the 410 reels i cut a slice (long 4mm ribbon of gorilla tape and fitted that to bottom of spool and it takes up the gap nicely, it should improve the problem
