hi Jason, welcome to the forum that is a very good question, and one that will probably generate a whole host of answers. line strength would be between 10lb and 15lb BS 'BUT' then you have the braid fan, the mono lover, the flouro aficionado etc, etc. you also have anglers that will only use Solar, Korda, Esp, Diawa etc. personally i use Esp Olive in 15lb @0.35mm, hook link material depends on the day. i love the stuff but that is just me. good luck in your search

tbh if i were just starting out and knowing what i know now i would start off somewhere were there was a high population of jack pike. the young ones seem to be a lot more forgiving than the old ladies and its a good way of getting that all important experience.

it has always amused me that such a voracious predator can be so delicate. it was driven home to me when i caught my PB 25lb of solid scary muscle, handled like a baby and went belly up as it was gently slid back, took a good 10-15 mins to get it to stay upright and start to kick. i havent been piking since and i know what i am doing.

wire brush to clean any swarf out of the teeth, then use an old paint brush to brush on oven cleaner and leave for 30 mins to degrease it. rinse off without touching file part and then dab dry, place your file in a plastic tray of ordinary viniger and leave for a couple of days, rinse off, dab dry and give a squirt of WD40. this will not only remove the rust but also sharpen your file. PS, should have said, this wont work with diamond files
