Yeah I did years ago. I used live ones, dead ones, dehydrated/dried ones.... and they were all rubbish. Imo the carp get on the (natural) snails simply because it's the easiest food source to harvest at the time. They're tuned into the food sources available in their watercourse and I don't think you can compete with that with any snails apart from those that are plucked out of the venue - so @jh92 has the right idea. Even then, there are other natural baits (maggots and worms) that will do a much better job of competing.

The snail discussion comes up every few years. Lots of guys try it. Hardly anyone has any real success. Imho, snails are just not a great bait.

Well if you are right , Yonny , which you almost certainly are because you are Yonny , you've just saved me a few bob .

Having been back at carp angling for a year after the massive long break, i did not figure to go back to doing any overnight sessions at all, years ago i sold of my bivvy and bed chair, i also promised my good lady i would not do nights, so as a compromise  i have found a lake i can do 24 hour sessions on and my mrs can stop at a good friends house close by in catterick 5 mins from green lane fishery.

Seeing as this night fishing is gonna be limited to less than 5 24 hour trips in a year i have decided to do a bad thing and get a pop up green tent, single air bed and generic 4 season sleeping bag, all this gear is a nice way to avoid carp tax with the whole lot costing less than a bedchair and taking up a tiny bit of room, i have brew making and cooking gear in our main camping kit, sadly this will have to wait till next year before i can go, but moving in right direction

    Hi Jules .

I'm glad your pop up tent is green as my local lake has a green or camo only rule for bivvies .

The move itself was fine, but the build up was a nightmare. We were supposed to exchange on the Thursday, complete on the Friday, move on the Saturday.

The exchange failed to materialise so it was all down to the Friday. At 16:30 on the Friday we had a call to say our buyers lender wouldn't release funds so the sale was off. Great! The solicitors and estate agents agreed to stay on late and at 17:50 we heard it was all done. Very lucky!

My brother has a newer model CRV, and I have been in it on a decent journey when we came back from Tottenham Stadium when the Chicago Bears beat Jacksonville. It's nice, comfortable and on my list of 'possibles', as is the Nissan X-Trail.

I've got a collection of books for my Dad, the type of things that interest him, the cracking of Enigma, Orford Island and it's uses in military research, The Channel Island and German Occupation and the development of the Spitfire amongst others.

His problem with socialising is he gets an interest in something and doesn't understand that it is not always relevant, or that in the case of the charity work he used to do for Greenways that during school holidays children would be included so he needed a DBS.

    Hi Nick

Thanks  for the feedback on the Honda CRV , it's always good to get someones opinion who you know , and is not in the motor trade . Also you are presumably looking at your replacement car with a view to access to the fishing waters you visit . A long time ago someone on Carp.com recommended a Subaru Forester so I might see if I can find one not too far away that I can physically look at .

Is  your Dad allowed his own personal tv in his room ? , because I watch Bangers & Cash on the Yesterday channel , and after that has finished at 4P.M. there's a program about WW2 .

    All the best .

Honda and VW are my two preferred manufacturers, and while Skoda is owned by VW, it just doesn't feel as comfortable and is slightly short of power. I've also found it slightly more difficult to balance the clutch and accelerator on starts. There is room for the gear, but not loads more as you would think. I'd happily go back to the new model Golf, although I am not sure on the liftback of the newer Civics.

I did see my dad today, he was dressed but in his room as I think he finds daytime television and the lack of conversation in the lounge annoying. He doesn't understand that it's a rehab unit, and they've got various stages of dementia.

Thanks for the car info. , Nick . I currently have a 2003 Honda  Civic , but I could do with some  extra height as the cars with Zenon lights dazzle me . I used to have a  2003 Honda  CRV , so maybe I'll go for a newer version ? .

I'm thinking that the fact your Dad wants to engage with people , and day time tv is annoying him is a positive as it sounds  like he wants to be stimulated ? .

    All the best .

Hopefully now things should settle down, my dad has been transferred to a rehabilitation unit in a care home quite local to me. He is still confused and unable to make decisions for himself with his dementia so my brother and I have signed the contract for the free treatment for 2-6weeks. It does mean that Dom and I can do alternative day visits to him, which might mean I can actually get fishing in again on the syndicate.

On a negative note I had to scrap my Honda Civic after a failed MOT, but have a hire car even if it is a Skoda Yeti.

At last a breathing space for you and your Brother ; your Dad's in safe hands , and much easier to visit regularly .

Shame about your car , at least it lasted while you were commuting to Aldburgh .

Skoda Yeti , ooh I've been looking to buy one of those , but my Wife is not so keen 😢 .

Well tight lines , Nick , and best wishes to your Dad .

Bromeswell is on a few estate agents and as much as I would love it...

" A granddaughter who pinched and ate a couple of chunks of luncheon meat dusted in turmeric and garam masala... " . No wonder that you didn't catch any Chub if your Granddaughter is eating your bait ! .

Maybe Carp.com could club together and buy Bromeswell 😁

😆no worries Mate, I know what you meant.

Believe me if the syndicate was close enough to the hospital I would fish and visit him as well, but a 60mile drive from North Suffolk to Aldeburgh is not a possibility.

I've had some 'Nick time', even if it involved a blank chub chase and two lost end tackles in a snag, and daughter and Granddaughter time with a trip to Norfolk

What a lovely Granddaughter , who looks very determined .

Shooting off at a tangent I saw a post on Facebook that said Bromeswell was up for sale ? .

No chance of getting to the syndicate while he is in hospital, even if he goes to Aldeburgh. He needs the social time with my brother and myself so every other day I will have to visit him until he can get into a full time care home.

Sorry , Nick , that was clumsy of me . I just wanted you to have some " Nick time " so your head didn't explode .

I should have remembered how important hospital visits are from when I was in hospital , and my Wife visited me .

    All the very best .

Hopefully my dad should be going back to the community hospital for rehabilitation tomorrow. He has managed to get around using a walking frame with the physio.

    Well that's sounds encouraging , Nick .

When your Dad is back at Aldeburgh hopefully you can draw breath , and relax a little after your difficult few weeks .

With these big winds , and rain of late they should be biting down your syndicate .

I really don't know where to start!

It's been a difficult few weeks with my dad in hospital since a fall at his flat in August. Just when we thought he was recovering, he had a chest infection turn into pneumonia while in the rehab community hospital at Aldeburgh, so got rushed back to Ipswich Hospital A&E on Saturday night, where he has been ever since.

Back in August I made a long Facebook post https://www.facebook.com/share/p/1JEEY9X2sB/

    Hi Nick

Sorry I've just read your post .

So how is your Dad at the moment , please ? .

I recently took my Wife to A&E , Ipswich Hospital , and we were in there overnight for 12 hours , so I know exactly what it's like . You were great in keeping your temper under control under stressful circumstances , I could have quite happily punched the first hospital employee I saw who just wound me up .

My Mum had dementia , and it became too hard for her to live at home so she went to live in a friendly  care home in the village .

Fortunately I didn't have to deal with a social worker , just a care home Manager with empathy , and knew what she was doing .

    Take care .

They feel like a miracle at the mo tbh too few and far between, must do better, 2nd proper season fishing just this lake, 4th year on the complex and still dont know where they go overnight and indeed whether they feed at night with the weed growth?  I have seen some dawn showing but when you move onto it the next day and next trip not a sausage showing, no pattern other than the assumption they're doing laps through the day.  Few sessions ago a few of us had 4 hours of showing fish over our traps and no bites whatsoever, so bizarre - never happened since - like what?!?!  Where they eating naturals that were on the baited patches?

I know exactly when and where the 2 main targets get caught from in spring (ones now dead) but the behaviours outside of that are a mystery and noone has really sussed it - certainly testing me to the limit but I love it thankfully.  Lots to keep you busy 👍

Do it while you're able to hey - to the max, one lap exceeds my daily step target so small wins! 💪🤣

" but I love it thankfully.  Lots to keep you busy 👍

Do it while you're able to hey - to the max " .

Well that says it all , Kev. , as long as you are enjoying yourself .

Some  of the lakes I fish have a number of swan mussel shells about , and I remember about 50 odd years ago chunks of swan mussel on a big hook were used . I wonder if that would work ? .

Iv had a run in with a deliver bike he must have been going 20mph he skidded to a stop and we both went down, sadly I lost my balance as I got up and stood on his front wheel damaging the spokes then would you believe it trying to untangle my foot I stepped on the back wheel 🫢

How unfortunately clumsy of you BB 😁 .

Yes mate, you have to ring a bailliff for assistance.  It's usually locked up so was prepared to take the risk if needed.

Moved swims for my last night where I wanted to be, if anything just to bait up ready for the weather next weekend 👍

Ah , all this forward planning must give your captures extra pleasure 😀 .

    He's great lol

Follows me up trees - out over the water and everything, then remembers every climbing tree and looking spot on our laps and pulls me towards them. he also thinks every car in the world is mine and tries to get in each to go home lol

Not as interested in the waterfowl as George was but still barks if someone goes past or enters the swim 👍

What a fishing buddy , every angler should have a Jack 😀 .

Managed a 33lb linear around 1 this morning.

    Made up!

No pics allowed on SM, I'm afraid.

Good grief , Commonly , no easing yourself in gently , great stuff 😄.

Another blank, another swims view sorted out but bad news this week, my target fish has passed 2 weeks back - gutted! 👎

Still I didnt join to catch a particular fish so nothings changed really, still loving the complex so carry on regardless 🤷‍♂️
