muftyboy Posted June 8, 2019 Report Posted June 8, 2019 Afternoon chaps. Anybody ever used live snails as bait?. Ive used slugs but wondered if that extra crunch with the shell might be a winner. Also what do you reckon would be the best way to hook them?. Cheers. Quote

Did you have any luck with them? If so how did you present them? I guess you could drill the shell of a snail, not too sure if a common snail will survive too long under water and would it drag your rig around a bit? Interesting bait theory, I hope someone has a bit more knowledge Quote
dayvid Posted June 8, 2019 Report Posted June 8, 2019 Never used Snails or Slugs , but if I was to put a Snail on the hook, out of the shell, I would use Bait elastic and bind it on , very similar to way I secure soft baits I use Beach fishing . https://www.gerrysfishing.com/gerrys-bait-elastic-1-per-pack.ir commonly 1 Quote
commonly Posted June 8, 2019 Report Posted June 8, 2019 Do you thread that through the bait? The slug can change shape quite a bit, so I doubt a lassoo would work. I suppose floss would have the same effect! 🤔 Quote

Mainly float fished though. commonly 1 Quote

salokcinnodrog Posted June 8, 2019 Report Posted June 8, 2019 I've caught carp, pike, perch and chub on slugs, in fact I freeline slugs specifically targetting chub on a size 2 or 4 Super Specialist. I have thought about using snails on the hook, but found putting a hook through the shell created a larger than needed hole if it didn't crack, and I never fancied drilling them. The furthest I got was putting live snails in my spod mix as I got to the bank. I do not know if they added extra attraction. commonly 1 Quote

Years ago Saskcarp had a link to a Japanese fishing site that showed a snail drilled through the shell and hair rigged. Quote

Took forever, the shells are so fragile, anyway it looked banging, I had found the holy grail No bites not a sniff - useless!!! As Yonny says maggots and worms lol yonny 1 Quote

It was an isotope suspended by a cork ball with a ball of maggots tied on. It looked amazing, glowing green with little wrigglers, the name was very apt. Needless to say he blanked lol. Quote
