When i was a young lad, we cycled 4 miles to the local drain, with our beach caster rods, coupled up with very miss matched Michel 300 reels, bright blue 30lb line and a box of rusty spinners. First cast my mate put a rusty treble through his ear Crushed the and pulled it back out. No infection!

It's not meant to prove anything, just me shooting the breeze, go and get some breakfast down you and slow down a bit.

Fluorocarbon will never rival a neutral soft braid. I also would not get too hung up on selecting the right colour, they can't see as well as the tackle company's may lead you to believe. Lake beds are littered with all sorts of things that a fish cannot differentiate.

But why does it cause damage?

Fair enough, horses for courses. lots of rigs seem to have their for and against. I've never seen a real issue caused by it n real life. Does any one have any real reason that it supposedly causes damage, those threads just seem to condemn it, with seemigly little more information other that they hear it causes damage. I don't disagree that it might do, but if tied correctly, i see no reason that it is any worse than the majority of rigs out there.

Aside from aesthetics, Where a custom rod really comes into its own, is the fact that its custom. You can have the handle length set up perfectly for your arm length, and the eyes positioned perfectly dependingon what reel you are going to be using.

The rule applies to hooks that you have actually bent. I.e a very long shank hook that you have bent into a curve.
It was a popular rig/mouth distroyer several years ago.
Hinged stuff rigs and 360rigs have been designed to give the same mechanics, whilst providing a safer rig.
I would say you an use any hook you want off the shelf, and stay within the rules.

I think rose tinted glasses play a big part. Everything can sound amazing now that its gone.
 
By all accounts in its hayday, wrasbury was an absolute hole, filled with fly tipped rubbish, and surrounded by scallywags. Given the chance at the time, I'm not sure that many would be rushing out to fish it! It's looking back on it makes it wetter than it ever was.
Fishing the likes of wrasbury now just isn't the same, but there are plenty of other big pits around, if you are willing to travel/search,filled with a hand full of very big fish.
That are no different to the way wrasbury was 15 years ago. Make history, don't re-live it! If you want the excitement, guest on wrasbury Divers lake!
 
There still are 'history' waters about, that are well worth fishing, Ashmead for instance. I wouldn't mind betting there are several long forgotten waters too!

The final of the BCAC is being held there this year , there is a web site , 45 swims on a 45 acre lake from what I can see you are taken to your swim with your gear . Fish up to high 40's .
In comparison to what it was I guess now it would be considered a runs water but I'm willing to bet it ain't going to be easy .
We can also get into the debate on what makes a ' history ' water and is it now just another day ticket water trading on its former glory .

I think for comedic value, money would be better spent with 30,000kg of the cell, a tipper, and filling the lake in.

And with leadcore and pendant or inline set-ups, it only takes a tiny kink and the fish could now be trailing a death rig. If you have to use leadcore, then only ever with a helicopter set-up, but my advice, is ditch the leadcore totally.
 
I know about inline running leads, and yes, they can work, but are they working as we think they are?
 
I came to the conclusion, if I want a running lead, use a run ring. If I want to fish in weed with an inline, then use a straight semi-fixed inline

I have a feeling a can of worms may open here...
But personal feelings....
 
Personally, I don't see the point in using a running rig with leadcore....or with an inline lead. It just doesn't move resistance free like a running rig is supposed to. It kind if just leaves you with a 'sort of running rig' with no real benefit.
Not to mention if you get the smallest kink in the 'core, or bit of lead poke out, you hae yourself a death rig.
 
Same goes with using a lead clip without the clip firmly fixed to an end swivel, the lead will never eject if the clip is not fixed, and if the lead can't eject, why are you using the clip in the first place?
 
 
I like your idea of having a rig that can quickly be changed to a different style, but you have massively lost all the posative mechanics of all the rigs involved in return for a minor convenience.
 
TLDR: If you want a running rig, use a running rig, if you want a semi-fixed rig, use a semi fixed rig.

What a horrible generalisation.

No benefit at all, other than the fact you can completely fine tune how stiff, and how supple both parts are. You will never get a coated braid that is as stiff as how you can make a combi link.
Rigmarole, hydrolink on the other hand....

Swivels are more than just a convenience for me, and I still don't think that they work as intended, probably partly because we cover one side with a nice lead clip or rubber sleeve, to stop tangles, but also because I don't think that line as it compresses and twists will exert enough 'pressure' to untwist. I think a swivel needs a fair amount of force to make it swivel.
 
One thing that they are very handy for is attaching the hooklink to the mainline. The eye is large enough to pass the mainline (or hooklink) through twice to create a very safe strong knot. I don't like joining lengths of line together, (mono leader or braided (leadcore for those that have to    ) a knot creates a weak spot; so joining a hooklink with a knot to mainline is a worry for me, although I do it when I'm small fish fishing with fine lines  
 
One very big advantage that swivels have in that join is regularly changing rigs, you automatically cut away a (short) length of the mainline, this piece of mainline just happens to be the section most likely to be damaged anyway, the lead rubbing over it, the run ring running up and down it, all will weaken that last bit especially, plus with the lead, it is the section that gets most force exerted on it during casting, causing stretch, and weakened line.

I vouch for two PVA nuggets folded around the hook. If the hair is real long, tie it up with pva tape wrapped round.
I don't like small PVA bags, everyone uses small bags of pellet or stick mix on their hook bait, just not for me. The wind resistance of the PVA is enough to hold it out straight on the cast, and if you hit the clip, or snag the line when it hits the water, it straightens out fine.
