Well, that's food for thought. See the way I approach things now is, the next fish might be the catch of a life time, or the year, or the session, whatever, if there's even the remote chance of it not performing or failing then I want out! I tried a tail over a hook swivel, it seems on the face of it ok. But i can't help but think if you're unlucky when your fish is in a snag or weeds and manages to get lead hooked up long enough to head in the opposite direction to your mainline then conceivably it could slide off?

The only thing this Moderator is doing with the post is "Stickying" it.

Like Gary for a lot of years I used the stuff (and can "prove it" from old diaries), but did not realise the problems that go with it. Eventually after comments made by Goblin, Jemsue and some other people on here, and losing a fish, I decided to get into the water to prove or dispel the myths that I thought they were making up.

To my surprise I found all they said was true regarding splices, abrasion, twisting, kinking and preventing release and the problem of potential fish tethering.

Like Gary I also purchased some ready made leaders and the ends frayed away, even with a Needle knot, and on a cast the whole leader left the mainline. I had to go in to retrieve them as it was during the experiments I was running.

I had a BIG argument with a certain magazine and its editor about publishing leadcore rigs as I thought it was irresponsible, the whole e-mail saga went on for a month or so, and yet he didn't want me to publish or post his comments on here or any other forum. Then the magazine went onto do a "For and Against" debate, with Keith Moors and another name. I was accused of scaremongering, and told that the time I spent typing I didn't have time to do any actual fishing.

I remember the death of Arnie the Big Common at Linear (? the name of the lake I am not sure of), and being found tangled up in leadcore in snags on one of the lakes, then the same sort of death has happened to other fish since then; Grey Tail I believe was found dead wrapped up at Suffolk Water Park, and a couple of fish I have found myself (still living fortunately), and then Simon Crow decided to take the trouble to publicise a DEAD fish he retrieved wrapped up in a Leader. There was also another picture published on here and in magazines with a fish having taken a piece of plastic corn wrapped up in a bundle of lines (in plural), some of which were leadcore and leaders.

    Gary,
I would be very interested in any photographs you have of your experiments. Might be worth posting on here, and sending to a magazine or 2 to see if they reply.

Incidentally the (13page) thread regarding my comments sent to the Magazine is still on the forum, and if anyone wants to have a read of the thread and the argument it turned into I will PM the search terms or the link if you want it.

We don´t want to bother you with harsh restrictions and the like but there are some simple things that make life a lot easier for you, the other forum members and the mods.

    1. Read the rules of this forum, and keep them in mind when posting. Most trouble with the mods or other members is caused by not holding to these rules.

    2. Use the search engine as often as possible!
There´s already a lot of information on here and you can learn a lot without posting yourself. Some members may get annoyed by answering the same question over and over again. A tip for the Search facility, when you type in the search term, click "search all terms", you can even specify which particular forum you want to search for posts in.

    3. Be polite and friendly in your posts. For example DON´T SHOUT, so keep the CAPS LOCK Off

    4. Check your spelling! It´s hard to read your posts if you don´t. For this matter there´s the edit button in the right corner of every post.

    5. Contribute to this forum. This means don´t only ask questions although good questions are a contribution but answer questions if you´ve the knowledge.

    6. If a post or thread you read is against the rules of carp.com report it to the mods. Therefore every post has the report this post button in the corner.
Even if you think that a post is in the wrong place or is incorrect then report it (a "click" button to the right of the post). We would rather have report post notifications than a bunch of insults flying.

Swearing will not be Tolerated on the Forum.

I have removed and edited posts to remove [censored] language. There is no need for it. If you cannot post without swearing then simply do not post!
As for Swearing, I don't care if you use asterisks, @, figures etc to replace a letter. The Implication is there and as far as I'm concerned counts as Swearing.

If you cannot post without swearing then simply do not post!

The post will simply be removed and the Member who swears will be BANNED INSTANTLY.

I have also been removing Posts and Threads that are containing Text Talk.

The reason for Text Talk is a Lack of space on a mobile Phone Text screen. There is no such limit on Carp.com replies/posts.
It makes a post easier to understand if it is written in plain ENGLISH, with NO TEXT TALK. Ok spelling mistakes happen: typing too fast, unsure of a word.

Please note that any posts which have TEXT TALK in that I see will be REMOVED.

Then there is the most important part of Carp.com

    HAVE FUN!

don't let anyone, especially youtube tell you how to fish.
finding what works best for you is part of the great adventure that is carp fishing, it is ok to take on board the advice doled out at the carp.com pulpit but i bet none of the die hards on here take the info gleaned and use it undiluted.
i'm not saying "don't ask for advice" because that would be stupid, even Dal, nick Tim or i have asked questions in the past, its how we learn.
most of us are 'time served' but we can still learn from others, i have 50+ years from canal for gudgeon to carp but you should have seen my face when i first saw the bungee rig a couple of months ago
bailiffs are only good for one thing and i will take that with a pinch of salt and that is bait info.
i will use rigs from 3" to as long as 2ft depending on the lake or method that i am using at the time.
enjoy your learning curve and tight lines

Absolutely. I've heard it said a million times since I came back to fishing. I was sat there on the day thinking, over there, over there is fish. That's where I ought to be. Then my other silly self denial side of my brain convinced me that, well, what if we're about to move off the path of the fish of the year? Of course, fishing I am learning has so much more self discipline, situational assessment, logical thinking than I think bad fisherman and non-fisherman realise.

    I'll give you this, covering both hooklink and hair length;

My hook links are usually between 15-20 centimetres long, 6-9inches as most of the lakes and rivers I fish are pretty weed free, and I use running leads, which may mean I can get away with shorter rigs than if using semi-fixed leads.

My hair length is always changed dependant on where I am hooking (or losing) the fish.

I start off with the hair leaving the shank of the hook directly opposite the barb of the hook, and the hookbait about 5millimetres below the bend, hanging freely, not touching it.

If I start losing fish, or hooking them at the very edge of the mouth, then I lengthen the hair.

If I am hooking them deeply in the mouth, or can see the hook has scraped down inside before finding hold, I shorten the hair.

If the hook is dead centre of the bottom lip, hair length is spot perfect.

    Some additionals for you though;
If you feed more particles, groundbait or pellets, a big bed of free bait, then you may need a shorter hair and hooklink than if you feed just boilies.
In other words, how you feed may also contribute to how long a hair or hooklink you use.

If you fish in weed, then you may need a shorter hair to keep the bait tight to the hook.

Finally, pop-ups are a different kettle of fish altogether, and in most cases, should i use a pop-up, then the bait is on an extremely short hair, more shank mounted than on a hair at all.

    Location, location, location.
As far as it sounds, your only problem was that you were not in the swim next door. How many times I have been in a situation fishing 2 or 3 rods, and I have caught several fish all on the same rod. There are many many variables of location in your own swim, let alone comparing to the swim next door. I wouldn't beat yourself up, one fish is a successfull session, don't worry about what you did wrong, but try to realise everything that you did right.

i prefer a longer leader, so that when the lead is in position to cast, you have 5-7 turns on the spool at least. 2 reasons. You can afford to cut the ends off the leader every now and again if it gets damaged, or just to re tie knots, and it means the knot will be on the spool when you are netting the fish. Nothing worse to unnerve you, than the sound of a leader knot going through the rings up and down just as you are getting a fish in the net!

Silicone tubing, I managed to get a large amount in olive green and clear from Mo's co before he disappeared, and as of yet, don't need to get anymore.

As for shrink tubing, I don't get that from a tackle shop, I go to Maplins and look carefully at the sizes before I purchase what I want. I say that, cos I can't remember what sizes they do, but know it is usually the smallest available that I want.
I don't care that along its length it does have some white writing or printing, cos while the carp are busy trying to squint and read what it says, they are also sucking my bait into their mouth

I have nothing against DF or Korda, but I do dislike some of their gear and some of their statements etc.
Dany has a remarkable talent for marketing and making people take note and he certainly makes money, for that I praise him.
But I dislike it when I here them state that one of their sponsered anglers or company members have designed a rig or even an item of tackle and its not true, eg Krusher, anyone who has been in a cocktail bar will have seen them used and years before Korda, their hook paterns etc.
And then rigs etc, take a look at the naked chod that according to their tv programs, was developed by one of theirs, it was being used and written about on this forum years ago, etc etc
I have yet to see anything done by them that was not described or used before and if they then market it to the masses, so be it, however they should not claim its their idea, but the law being what it is they can do it and get away with it as normal mortal anglers do not have the finances to pay for filling patents.

My view, you only need a leader when casting to the max, absolute distance casting in weed free clear waters.

All leaders increase the risk of tethering fish, and create another weak spot in the line as on most occasions, that is where it breaks.

If there are any snags or weed etc, then use a mainline suitable for it. Accept you can't cast as far, and don't put fish at risk of tethering.

If you're adding an additional knot to the line which has left your spool there is additional risk that it can snap, no matter what.
If you want to go down that route then you have to decide how big the additional risk is and if you are prepared to accept it.

If you decide to try it; I'd put on about 20 foot of fluoro. Should give you a nice big zone for feeding.

The first thing to consider whilst deciding to use a leader is,Is it absolutely necessary. If you are not fishing at long range, upping the diameter of your mainline should be deemed a first option. If fishing in dense weed, a braid mainline is a well worthy and possibly the best option. This is due to its ' cutting through the weed capabilities ' , direct pull, bite indication etc.
I sometimes use 20lb Xline as a leader of about 6ft to 8ft . This is when using a helicopter rig in light weed in gin clear water. Obvious reasons being that it sinks like a brick and hides better than my mainline, and it's strong enough to take the strain of pull on the swivel whilst playing a fish. Sometimes I use a 3in leadcore leader so that the swivel can slide down and position itself onto that. When using an helicopter rig in weed, I use 3lb line to tie my lead on and korda no trace beads as fish safety is of paramount.
When respooling flourocarbon mainline, ensure that it goes on without any twist. It then needs a good good stretch . I go to the local fields early in the morning to avoid dog walkers. I take a rod, reel and my spools along with a Bivvy peg. I walk it out 100 yards or so , peg it down ,walk back and give it a big stretch. I the release it from the peg , walk back and wind in the limp line. I do this 3 times per spool. Hence the early morning lol. It's worth doing this excercise after each fishing trip for at least the first 3 times of use. Or when ever it starts misbehaving. I do it with mono mainline also as I do suffer from line twist from time to time. This excercise resets your line so to speak.

I use some Korda gear, in particular n-trap coated braid (which I love) and I do posses a Krusher (although I haven't used it yet). I tried some of their dark matter rig putty but didn't find it as good as Heavy Metal so won't use it again.
The only problem I have is whenever I think of Korda I tend to think "Chav".

I'm not a fan at all but , credit where its due , DF has built that company up from making his own leads & flogging em from his van to what it is today .
His products on the other hand , i feel , leave a lot to be desired .
I have felt let down by the quality of some of the Korda tackle in the past so i tend to avoid now since there are better products on the market that are cheaper .
Having said that , i use his stow indicators and his Krusher , both wonderful items .

I love the rigz section of the K website . Its clear concise and easy to understand and i can use it to utilise my Gardner , Esp , fox and other numerous hooks and terminal tackle .
