I started carping in 79' back then both KM & RH books, plus the monthly fishing mag articles both hammered the High Nutritional Value theory as the way forward...it wasn't until I read a fascinating article mid-80's in BIG FISH Mag by Clive Dietrich (richworth baits, i still have that mag in the loft!) about low to mid-protein baits, brilliant piece, i kept that articles theme in my mind over the years... what i bolded above is SPOT on (similar views as Clive's article) in regards to how i make baits today

interesting post! where can i buy a tin of this, cheers! my view is & in agreement what rod hutchinson wrote all those years ago in: The carp strikes back...with 1 addition below* ie what i bloded in ya post "was missing from their food, carp would search out foods that provided all the nutrients they required" back then when most carpers made home-baits....most lakes get hammered with the going bait, early 80's semo-soya-flour sweeter flavor....once results started to flatter, someone tries protein AND cleans up! all get on to protein...at some point results decline, fish meal come alone, then meat, liver, then tigers, then hemp etc, etc ...a constant ongoing cycle... case in point, do ya remember the story about andy little on savay....he was spending a FORTUNE on protein, his results were TOP NOTCH ...however he couldn't afford the expense with the amount of protein he was paying out for, so he decided to do a test and substitute the milk-protein for semo-soya-flour mix ONLY using the same flavor as in the successful milk-protein, to his amazement he got the same successful results! * I believe carp have *ADDICTIONS* just like us lol who can resit eating a bag of cheddar cheese & onion crisps even knowing its c r a p junk-food? ...i open a 150G bag only want to eat a few BUT...end up scoffing the lot down in 1 sitting! its simply an addiction to those TASTY crisps even though you can eat bags AND still not feel full! If you look at the last 25 years the BIG NAMED brand commercial carp boilies sold, NONE are HNV...YET they WORK quite well don't they? I reckon the recipe guys behind the BIG brand commercial carp boilies are making bait based on the above*...of course imo.

Old_Skool_Carper replied to commonly's topic in Carp Fishing Tackle and Equipment
indeed, £450 TOTAL ripoff!....ffs my solid wooden double- bed indoors i got FREE and I refurbished it AND added a new mattress total cost £120.00! i'm looking for a lite weight bedchair, (of course 2nd hand for me ) this came up in my search , NEVER used this brand, however they do have good reviews on amazon. this might be just what ya looking for: CARPZILLA Fishing Bed 6 Legs Dimensions (Unfolded): 215cm (L) x 95cm (W) x 33-51cm (H); - Maximum User Weight 150KG £78.84 with coupon code, a BARGAIN...as they go for around £110.00 -

i've used vecon for donkeys and always thought it was about the protein (58%), but in recent years i don't believe the HNV theory anymore, IMO i'm sure its the yeast the carp can detect and are attracted to...the Grandessa Mighty Yeast, has an Yeast Extract of (88%) so for this new season will substitute the vecon for 'Grandessa Mighty Yeast' and will give it a whole season and report back results🤞

I always buy a few jars of vecon when its on offer, only have 2 jars now remaining in the fringe... have used Aldi's Grandessa Mighty Yeast, when H&B ran out of vecon, it worked however can't really comment as a comparison, cos it was only for a couple of months, i'm sure it would be just as good! one thing i'm certain off, homemade will ALWAYS out Fish win 👍...over fishing-shop bought c r a p!👎

meet an angler the other week who was moaning about his £13, 115ml kordaRipOFF goo lol so gave him my recipe ....was gonna write up a new post, did a search and this thread came up... yeah @Pete Springate's Guns ya post is bang on what i use but i add 1 more ingredient which is molasses. Vecon - Fish Sauce - Molasses, all in equal measures, told the said angler ya can buy Squid Brand Fish Sauce 725ml...for £2.50 from sainsburys you simply adjust the consistency using the Fish Sauce, told him ya can make a liter for chump change! AND most of all WORKS MUCH BETTER THAN ANY ripoff BAIT-TackleBARRON c r a p! case in point, a mate that took me babel fishing last year, he raved about his 'sticky' glug! Hmm...he BLANKED all morning next to me, while my CHEAPO secretSauce had the rod bend over every hour with some lovely barbel!

Which alternative hookbait colour?
Old_Skool_Carper replied to elmoputney's topic in UK Bait and Bait Making
I used Rod Hutchinson's original early 1980's scopex flavour extensively it was simply the BIZNESS ! Caught wherever I went on this SUPERB flavour! I've smelt/had most of what's been available as 'scopex' since, including the new RH Italian stuff (IMO inferior) NOTHING comes remotely close to original early 1980's scopex! (i still have a small amount for sniffing only lol!) cos of this thread and the mention of: forgottenflavoursofficial.com checked them out and here is there offering for scopex: ************************************************************************************************************************************************************** SCOPEX NEW FOR 2024: Due to now getting access to more and more old school ingredients, our Scopex recipe has slightly changed. It is now a reworked version on the original! Same thing goes for Scopex, does it really need an introduction? Scopex and Monstercrab, perhaps two of the most used flavours in carp fishing to this day. However, where a lot of Scopex's of these modern day and age are more like Milky, dairy like flavours, our Scopex is far from that. Remember that diacetin flavour Hutchy [RIP] had in his Scopex bottles? Well, I believe we have done enough to get as close as possible to the legend's Scopex. I will never say we have copied, or replaced his Scopex, because you just can't say something like that. Here, we honour and respect the oldschool style and brand of what Rod Hutchinson once was. RIP and RESPECT. All Forgotten Favourites Flavours will be supplied in glass, European made 50ml bottles with a very tight screw cap. ************************************************************************************************************************************************************** do you or anyone here had any dealings with this company's flavours ? tempted to buy ...with shipping its around 20 quid for a small 50ml bottle!...only to throw it out like the others!🤣 -

not about vintage tackle. However...for those of us who started 40+ years ago will remember this famous shot when it was published in KM's Book, reading Pete's story & seeing that photo made me MEGA KEEN! Sir Pete Springate's Yeoveney Brace caught in October 1978 - 38lb 8oz and 36lb 8oz

I discovered sour dough bread 3 decades ago, have NEVER gone back to eating what i would call... 'cotton-wool bread' lol several years ago i thought I'd used the sour dough bread making process on my 'nut /yeast bait' (the nut is NOT used by bait companies as too expensive) ...results have been superb on just that little tweak, that incidentally cost ZERO! 👌

Shot on the hook from Today's thought.
Old_Skool_Carper replied to Higham1987's topic in UK Rig Tying
indeed! its maily the young /inexperined that get suckered into this sort of BS, cos at the end of the day its nothing new, we used it in the 80's, yet in DF video he states its the breakthrough since the hair-rig....what a morron a greedy one at that! he'll make this in chickland for 5p a pack AND flog to the muppets for a fiver a pack ...thats why the tackle-barrens get rich! BUT they WON'T be getting my cash lol!!! -

@salokcinnodrog hiya... re: "I'd stick with my own spiced garlic pop-ups. " i;ve been playing around this season with garlic-essential-oil from whole foods, only using 2 drops per 1 KG of dry mix what a PONG!!!😷 caught but catches haven't been great, i remeber you saying you spiced yours, my question is do ya use cayenne pepper or some other spice, can ya say or is it a secret?! PM if ya like , CHEERS!

been looking to going back to wearing old-skool clobber, picked this Belgium woolen army jumper up at a charity shop, they wanted a fiver, i bargained 'em down to a whooping 3 quid!!!😂

Jealousy in carp fishing! Seriously is it this bad ?
Old_Skool_Carper replied to Danny Hearn's topic in UK Carp Fishing
@^^ back in 82' i remember reading KM's book or article and him saying, never be jealous of someones results, as you can do just as well if you put the effort in. so true, imo, back in the day it was no where near as bad with the green giant aspect ...compared to today...with instant so called carp anglers, never having read the above memo! -
just when ya thought the thread would fade away...i come along with my 2 pennies worth!👀 i still calculate distances in yards, and for years just used spool clip & turn of reel to calculate distance,(then tie line to branch and walk back) then a lot of anglers said to get some distance sticks, so mush easier... so last year bought ngt 10 quid cheapos delivered, well i hate 'em! never any room in the swim, and blooming line twist, gone back to my old skool way!
