I've done my order and gonna go with a milky nut bait and If I've worked it out correctly the finished bait should give roughly

39% protein

45% carbs

15% fats

👍

What are you putting in it to make it stand out from the rest of the milky nut baits?

Nothing I don't think mate, I just like the idea of using and catching on a bait I put together myself and knowing there's a really high chance no one else is using it lol. Also being able to roll a lot of bait cheaply, on a week session on my res in the summer I'll probably be doing 20kg+ 🤣

Some of the main ingredients are wpc80, calcium caseinate, tigernut flour and a few more dry ingredients, liquids are nothing fancy, gonna be using a nut oil and one of the nutty liquids from aa baits 👍

I've got a recipe ready but no idea how it's gonna roll with the machine so might have to adjust when the time comes 👍

I think a good edge might be adding vitamins and healthy good stuff to a bait, might not make it anymore attractive but would certainly add longevity to it and be good for the fish.

One ingredient that has to be in any bait I buy nowadays is liver of some sort, just a confidence thing.

vitamin a, vitamin c, vitamin d, vitamin e, vitamin b1, vitamin b2, vitamin b3, vitamin b6, vitamin b9, vitamin b12.

Minerals:

calcium, phosphorus, magnesium, potassium, iron, zinc, selenium, copper.

Do you have a sheet that you use for base mix formulations? Would quite like to have a play with one 😂

I'm just kind of winging it mate lol. I'll read bait making pages on social media, websites etc and then put a recipe together myself with what I think will work.

I'll download the spec for each ingredient and have a look then just have a read online about what it contains. The sheets you can download when viewing an ingredient. I'm using aabaits for my stuff, I'm not sure if other suppliers have them available to download/view👍

I also have a book about baits by Tim Paisley which has some cool stuff about absorption rates of different proteins etc. It's a little too technical for me at the moment as I'm still learning, but I do find it fun 🤣

I was bored last night so I put together a mix using AA base mix to see what it would cost lol.

 Hnv Super red mix 85%

  premium attract + 5%

  hydrolysed liver powder 5%

  spirulina 1%

 garlic powder 2%

  Chilli powder 2%

  5l liver hydro

Not sure if I would add a flavour maybe chorizo or something meaty but would certainly work out cheaper 🤔

Tbh I haven't used any flavours yet, with yours I would probably try a small batch of how you've already got it and take it from there mate 👍 I could be totally off with this but I haven't really bought into the idea of these flavourings, i like to think if you've got a bait full of goodness in front of a carp, they are most likely going to eat it regardless of the flavour🤣

Only thing I might add is a little bit of oil to help with rolling 👍 best of luck mate let us know how it rolls 👌

I might have a dabble with some flavours when I start rolling some pop ups, but that probably won't be until summer. One thing at time for me 🤣

I was going to add chilli hemp oil I forgot to add it to the list 😳

Tbh I was just thinking what the cost saving would be, for the little spare time I have presently I think I will keep buying it for now. Just wanted to see what it would cost compared to buying it,

I wasn't going to add it all but it was £22 for 5ltr so I would use the spare for glugging etc

Yeah man I use hemp oil in my lt94 mix 👍I do think to make it cost effective and worth your time you've gotta be buying and rolling in bulk lol

I tried doing it all by hand with tables etc and 9 times out of 10 I'd just end up going out and buying a few bags of boilies because I couldn't be bothered with the hassle 🤣

Gotta add eggs to the cost as well then you will get a fair £per kilo rate

and then the biggest saving of all is Labour followed by tax lol

Yeah mate the price of eggs have gone right up over the last couple years 😬🤣

I haven't used any of it yet but I have seen I can get 20l of frozen egg for 32.99. Has anyone used that stuff before? Also gonna have a look if there's other options I can play with 👍

More so if you buy from supermarkets than locally. Many egg suppliers refused to sell to supermarkets unless they paid a fair price to egg producers.

I get my eggs from the greengrocer or butcher, no price increases.

I was bait making yesterday, working on a base mix for early spring attractor baits to go with the garlic oil and Megaspice flavour.

5ml of Verselle Laga Garlic oil, 2ml of Megaspice to 5 medium eggs.

This.

I used to price up mixes regularly and I always found that for a no-holds-barred super mix I'd struggle to get ingredients for less than a tenner p/kg all in. Add to that your time which even if you price at minimum wage sends the cost of the bait through the roof.

Bait rolling is, imo, a labour of love. There is very little saving to be had any more. For sure making your own bait is an edge - but the true cost is much higher than most realise.

I'm gonna have a hunt around over the next few weeks and see if I can get anything locally, I'm down in Devon and we have farms everywhere 👍🤣

The lt94 mix I'm using works out about £8.50 - £9 per kilo, that's including the eggs and liquids tho lol. I haven't worked out the nutty mix yet as I don't know how many eggs/liquids it's going to take per kilo. But the price of wpc80 and calcium caseinate is a bit nuts 🤣

I'm gonna have time to next week to give it a good go and gonna time myself to see how much I can knock out in a day. The manufacturer of the rolling machine is saying it will do 100kg in 18mm easily in a day. But I haven't used the mixer yet so unsure of the time it's gonna take to mix the basemix lol. I do expect its gonna take a few attempts to fine tune it and get a bit of a system in place, but I'm hopeful 💪🤣

It's all good fun though, I would like to make bait as a side hustle but if it don't work out that's cool, I've got all the equipment to make bait really easily and will serve me well in the years to come with the waters I fish. I don't really fish tricky waters, I like working a swim where I'm spombing out a lot of bait everyday lol.

I don't think I would love it enough to go through the pain, I will continue just messing with liquids and powders to scratch the itch 👍

Got some pellets being coated in liquid at the moment, hopefully they will have dried out enough to coat them in some premium attract + powder tonight, then I might even try and go fishing to test them if I am allowed 😂

Same. Just baiting up is hassle, let alone making the stuff 😂

Yep I can manage a brilliant pre baiting campaign in my head proper project management level, I do weed raking and all sorts, the reality is often much different. I even look for particles that don't need soaking and boiling these days, even cool box friendly particles seem a hassle 😳

Any thoughts on boiling vs steaming baits?

Think it depends on any active ingredient you are using

if it’s active

the last thing you want to do is kill it by boiling it

Out with the Spomb and homemade baits £10, £20, £30...

And the few that fly off course £80, 90, 100...
