the thing with where i usually find myself fishing , is that to be successful i must remain as still and silent as possible , i have caught the majority of my fish in the past few years by locating them then getting as close as possible ,when located , i will often tempt them down the margins with a few tasty tit bits , i dont want to be tying rigs , i just have a few prepared with a long or short hair then a couple varying in length from 7 -14 inch, wrapped around a 4 inch length of 50mm pipe lagging , on the few occasions i have had to change rigs when there have been fish around i have been able to do so quickly without to much disturbance , oh yes , i will always take a hand saw to new places and my home made drag , which consists of 3 lengths of ally scaffold tube (chopped down to 8 ft ), 2 connecting clips and a very strong tarmac rake which bolts into the end of an ally tube ( through pre drilled holes ) .all of the above gear can be carried on my little kayak ! i have caught most of my fish from swims that others overlook ! And dont forget the polarised glasses , essential , i always make sure i have one hand free whilst scurrying round on river banks

my gear / 1 or 2 short stalking rods , set up then split in half , landing net and pole pole wrapped up in my carp mat and all held tight with a bungie , i then have a butty box with a few essential bits in, leads , scissors , hooks , hook sharpener , a short length of pipe lagging (insulation ) with a few rigs wrapped round , this is chucked in my rucksack with a bit of bait , flask ,butties and my scales ! ! greatly needed addition for next year will be a small piece of foam / sponge , as i have so many times had numb backside for hours , carp mat isnt quite thick enough !

yep ! if i drunkenly stumble on anything this Christmas , besides the dog then i will post it up !

when i get some time to myself this Christmas im going to look at some ideas regarding mechanics , a way of deflecting the hook into the carps mouth before ejecting ,

long ago my parents thought it would be a good idea to fit a compton theatre organ in our house , we had the pipes and the blower in the attic and the organ downstairs , after months of fitting said organ it was finally turned on and the blower ,which weighed around half a tonne , when it finally got up to speed , shook the house so violently some of the upstairs walls started to crack so it had to be turned off , never to be used again ! what a laugh ! guess who helped us fit it and wire it up , Fred Dibnah !

i tried ace razorpoints , first fish i hooked it snapped , think it was size 4 , i can bend a size 4 with my fingers , not just a bit of flexing but bent , i test all my hooks by putting them in a vice putting a piece of thin metal tube down over the point and seeing how much resistance there is as i pull down , trying my best to replicate a hook hold , ace razorpoints were the weakest i tried

I will be there in 3 to 4 weeks time , chasing an elusive couple of lumps that have evaded me for a couple of years !

I say again , can nobody produce a hook that we can use with confidence , or at least a little more confidence !
-
thanks everyone , ! I think I'm nearly there now , I'm trying to go through every scenario !

I think McLaren might be signing on soon ! -
yes , I have often thought , as I stand up ready to strike on those single or double beeps , but sit back down , "have I been had " and that was a carp ejecting my hook as it shot off shaking its head ! , I think now when I look back , that I'm more confident about not being done when I'm using a running rig ! How many of the single or double beeps though are bream or a tench picking the bait up but not the hook ,where the lead would usually pull from there mouths as they move off when using a fixed / semi fixed lead , I often wind in at night to get some kip , which I'm not that bothered about as it rests my swim and prepare for first light !
-
so do you think that you accounted for more big fish with running rigs on slack lines , this is where I was heading , from what ive read it could account for the older , bigger , wary carp , which have learnt how to eject a hook by using the lead weight !
-
have you ever fished washing line system on rivers to access opposite bankings under trees , I had a heron crash into it once , it went bonkers and shrieked like it was being murdered , it didn't get tangled , just startled it , and me
-
I remember loosing something huge when I fished across the flow , as it just kited with the flow straight to a snag , river lot , could of been a cat !
-
yep , it would be hard to fish slack lines in a river in the flow !, it would just create a large bow , when i fished a running rig on rivers in the flow , i always tightened up the slack , but out of the flow i did ! well , i try to pin everything to the bottom , sorry for that !
-
so , if i was fishing an area where the weed went out to around 20 meters , and i wanted to fish say 50 meters beyond where the weed finished , do you reckon that would be safe ?
-
I guess it would be a good idea to protect your knot ( on the swivel ) from the lead on the big chuck out !
-
no , I'm thinking of this for some of the large lakes I'm going to target ! , i have used it on some of the rivers ive fished , i try to go , when the flow is low , although , i will try , when its high , ! but its usually a struggle even with heavy leads , so , when its high , i stay on my local dammed section !

After watching numerous videos of carp using the lead to extract the hook by shaking their heads , i think I'm going to have a go this year at using running leads , fished on a slack line , i used this method long ago , as there was not much option , but not on a slack line ! i have often wondered how many times ive been done ! so , is it necessary to use the beads n bits that the manufacturers are saying are vital for this method , or just have the lead running free to your swivel , obviously the plastic bits manufacturers are worried that we might not need their overpriced bits ! sinking line , necessary ? i personally would like everything on the bottom I also think that with this method it would be vital for your hook to be as sharp as it could possibly be , as you are not relying on the lead to do the job just the weight of the line and water resistance , also i would like my bait / freebies to be spread as i want good movement after the pick up (distance ) to the next gob full to set the hook ! I do not expect to much publicity from the manufacturers , even if this is the best method of fishing , just imagine , not dropping the lead ( couldn't find the shock n horror imoji ) what say yee ?
