Sometimes budget is bad, but a lot of matts seem to be ok, one thing I'd look for is that the canvas webbing follows under the matt this will take the weight and not the seems What ever you buy if you feel it isn't padded enough you can always get a simple £10 stalking / roll matt to put inside

Yes defo can get a sinking bait to hold just under surface. Have got to say dovii a standard zig sounds the way to go, surely as others use pop ups the floating bait on a zig is acceptable as long as its under the surface?

What about a gardener suspender float? If you use a stiff hook link and small sinking bait it will actually hold it on the surface, you'll have to faf about with hook link length etc... it's not too much grief though. But I'd think you'd be pushing the rules to far though! [emoji39] Actually what Newmarket said go standard float near the surface. I'd say a lump of paste or meshed luncheon meat. It's a tough one. I've got a scraggly terrier that I'd love to take fishing with me. I've only taken her with me a couple of times and it was hassle so I'm inclined to agree with CM's comments. I love the image of the lab fetching every cast!!! I'd say it very much depends on where you are fishing and how much control you have over your dog. I know I can't trust mine to stay in the swim and it will jump up at every walker by, oh and definately take my rods out a couple of times! If your lake is quiet and you know the other anglers are fine with all potential dog behaviour, then go for it, but I thnk if your worried it may be best to leave dog at home.
