  1. If you use braid shockleader do make sure you wear a glove or finger stall. Also remember that braid does NOT stretch much if at all, so crack-offs may be a problem.
  2. I can't remember if I have said it on this thread, but foxes will take otter kills after otters are finished with it. Foxes tend to drag and cache the kill. They tend not to eat in 'public'.
  3. I use Solar Short arm Titaniums. I can set them up mega tight as spring arm indicators for tight line fishing, as plain swingers for short to medium range, or as slack line indicators, at maximum drop for slack line fishing. Apparently Long arm indicators are better, but personally I found no problems with the shorts. I do also use them for roach fishing with buzzers on the reservoir.
  4. Does it have much flow and boat traffic? What sort of depth and profile is it? By that I mean does it have a ledge both sides, any overhanging trees? Are there any locks? Any permanently moored boats? Boat traffic can move your bait around, especially in shallower water. It may pay to add some Vitalin in your baiting. Permanently moored boats can be worth fishing as they give cover, as do trees. The carp in canals and rivers can be almost constantly on the move.
  5. Welcome to Carp.com. There really is no set answer because different oils have different temperature bands, cloud up and solidify at different temperatures. Vegetable or nut based oils tend to be thinner and will continue to leak out. To be honest, I really only use oil in my groundbait in summer, in winter I prefer to use other liquids.
  6. I actually avoid carp tax fluorocarbon hooklink material, mine is Spiderwire in 15lb, but I don't do much snaggy water fishing. It does go through the eye three times on my Gardner Muggas for D-rigs.
  7. Reckon you will find many caulking guns are exactly the same as tackle manufacturer bait guns.
  8. I know Earith Marina a few years ago had an otter and a seal showing very visibly in the daytime, right by the bridge where the fen drain comes into the Great Ouse, so I worry for Earith Carp lakes as that wasn't all fenced with a footpath running right through between the two syndicates on either side. A few years ago in Chillfactors area I had membership of a couple of lakes just so I could bivvy up and watch the big airshow at Fairford. Sadly we learnt that otters had cleared most of the stock of carp, even the average size of the remaining tench had dropped as the bigger fish were munched.
  9. Talking of Redmire, it has just been desilted and had the koi looking carp taken out. Sadly the Halls Angling, Leisure Sports are no more. Most of those lakes were sold on and have become something different, although a few are still under syndicate or season ticket banner. There were a few that were under the radar as well when Leisure Sport was broken up! Korda have the Embryo lakes, basically buying lakes and putting full otter fencing then restocking or protecting the stock. I think your gripe as it were is the instant big fish lake. Growing on waters with forgotten stock seem to have gone.
  10. Load a rucksack correctly it is no problem. Clothes go at the bottom, gradually load it to heavy stuff at the top. The bedchair weight is basically spread from top to bottom as it is strapped at top and bottom. The weight was only around 40kilos with all my bait, food, water and cooking stuff. Not like I was yomping far with it... Maybe a mile or so round Ardleigh...
  11. I used to strap mine to my rucksack, it can make carrying it a whole lot easier. Rucksack and bedchair on my back, rod holdall strap across my shoulder, holding the handle, tackle box in the other hand. That is the advantage of Bergen strapping, you can attach pretty much anything to it.
  12. Sponsored lakes, a way to get loss making lakes to have a bit of secure funding I think in some cases. While I can use wraps, I still prefer to cast at a marker float and feel the lead down. I feel I can be sure I have the right spot compared to being 'slightly off' with a wrap. As for bait, while krill is a good bait additive, you can't have a high amount in your base mix as it makes it buoyant, so you need heavier non krill ingredients. In other words, you can't be sure of the percentage of krill in the base mix. Nut and coconut baits are valid, but I honestly feel that meat or fish meals are a better more viable source of protein, in fact my reasoning for my 'basic bait' in your welcome back thread. Buckets, oh my goodness, mine have come from various kitchens, all plain green with the food ingredient label taken off, or one camouflaged one that was so well camouflaged, someone left it on the bank in the swim...😖😆😆😉
  13. Why the heck didn't I patent the idea? Think my pic was long before the shroud was invented. I could have been a miwyeonaire😖😆😱
  14. Drennan Match anglers or ESP Carp salopettes are the best fishing ones. If you do look at others, I would actually be looking at skiing salopettes, but MTP Military ones do look pretty good: https://www.surplusandoutdoors.com/shop/outdoor-clothing/multicam-clothing-webbing/mtp-multicam-salopettes-bib-brace-1186390.html?pid=1186390&gclid=EAIaIQobChMIiYzei5Cs4AIVb7ftCh0flgBDEAQYByABEgJC_vD_BwE
  15. Something for you, a fishing chair supposedly goes flat, which can make it a pain to carry. Mine gets put inside my Chub Beanie unhooking mat, and strapped to my Korum ruckbag when I am pike, roach or chub fishing, which can involve a lot of roving. Getting up can be quite a trial if my body and bones are aching. I actually found for carp fishing a standard folding camping chair easier and more comfortable. One of those can fit in many rod slings or brolly holdalls with the brolly. They are also cheaper coming from camping style shops! https://www.sportsdirect.com/gelert-camping-chair-787052?colcode=78705290&awc=5374_1549561124_439a72f614deb46d8babdb47dd090bf6&utm_source=Affiliatewindow&utm_medium=Affiliates&utm_campaign=RedBrain+Ltd Years ago I had to minimise my gear for fishing on a reservoir with gates and stiles to go through and over, so a trolley was an impossibility. Tackle box, rod holdall with brolly or Roamer Dome/Nash Outlaw Hurricane shelter, bedchair, rucksack with all other gear in. This worked for days, overnighters or longer sessions. All my food, water, stove and bait etc went in the rucksack, with mat strapped to it. The tackle box all the end tackle was in there. Rod holdall had the rods, net and shelter in. My bedchair had the sleeping bag already in.
  16. 50mm butt rings, Korda fashion, not needed, but since DF, Ali etc recommend it, it has to be right...😖😆😅 It is also adding extra cost onto rods for minimal return. Unless you are a supreme caster, you honestly don't need them, too much chance of breaking a ring, and with ST10000's you definitely don't need them. Even my beachcasters, bass rods and spod rod don't have 50mm butt rings. Titanium rings, manufacturers have gone to Pac Bay for Tich rings, now Fuji and Seymo are just copies! http://wolfint.com/the-rods/ https://www.qualityfishingtackle.co.uk/product/rod-hutchinson-enduro-12ft-3-lb/
  17. You mean that one? My doing a quick sneaky night over the park, and sometimes well hidden in the undergrowth Camping sleep mat, tarp over the top, corner held up by a storm pole. Tackle box, rods and landing net strapped together with hairbands, rucksack with food, flask and pod in bag with buzzers and indicators. Looks like unhooking mat used as a pillow
  18. Personally I found Daiwa Sensor in clear was not as supple or as good as the brown. It did not knot as well. In fact most clear lines are not as supple or 'soft' as dyed/coloured lines. I use pretty much one line for all, my rods are spooled up with Gardner Pro, for long or short distance fishing, and I use the same on my 15lb surface fishing line, but I do treat it with Kryston Greased Lightning which makes it float better. The same line is on my spod rod with a shockleader, and my marker rod has Berkley Gorilla line on it, I think, been on there for over 10years with no deterioration, so I think that was my last refill. My lower breaking strain surface set-up had 8lb mono on, Drennan Feeder line, again it gets treated with Greased Lightning. I use a feeder line because it is tough, can handle abrasion against lilies etc. If I do need low visibility fluorocarbon type line for my normal fishing, I use P-line Floroclear, a co-polymer with a fluorocarbon coating. It does not cast as well as standard mono. My pike fishing reel spools are loaded with 50lb Berkley Whiplash braid, I actually get a 300m spool and split it across 2 reels. The only way I will put a bait out over 150metres is if I am drifting baits on the ressie.
  19. Most definitely. As long as the waters are ice free, not still frozen over I would be going.
  20. Are you looking on the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation and sections of the Chelmer? Ok, I know the largest boat size allowed on the navigation is 60 ft 0 in (18.29 m). Look for something like a Pilot 4 if you can leave it moored down there, or have easy launching. You can fit a cuddy so its comfortable enough to sleep on for a night or two. If you are having to launch every trip on your own, then I wouldn't be thinking on any more than a Rigiflex 390 and removable outboard. As an add, it is very difficult to use buzzers from the back of a boat. I have done enough pike fishing to know using a float gives better indication.
  21. I found Cinnamon Oil with Peach Nutrafruit was one of my best summer and winter combinations.
  22. On Taverham, where a spring entered the lake thawed first, yet in winter was fishless. They just didn't like that area at all, rarely even came into that bay even in summer. Looks like we may be doing some more waiting for a thaw, -4 in my area last night. I walked back from my Dads after going round to see him, and that felt cold.
  23. Go to a local animal feed store if you have one nearby, the ingredients will be a bit cheaper. They will also have or can get the Garlic Oil I use, by Versele Laga. It is used by pigeon keepers.
  24. It should work, but check how it binds together. As much as everyone likes a bit of spice, you may find essential oils and garlic oil better ingredients mixed in with your eggs. I would also up the liver powder to 0.5kg. Check your soya, different flour grades will change how it rolls. I use full fat soya flour.
  25. I did well a few years ago on Nazeing when the lakes thawed and meltwater was pouring in from the Lee Relief Channel. Three 20's and a beautiful double on a 4 day/night session. I arrived, walked round, thought I saw a swirl, so set up on it. Within hours I had a 26lb fish, which I nearly lost. The hook pulled, but it sank into the landing net. One blank day, but next I had a 20, and on the last morning another 26, which as I was getting ready to photograph caught the 16lb Not every lake is the same though. Some will stay switched off until spring, some you may have to find the fish for a bite or two. The pics have uploaded in the wrong order, it is black jacket 26 first, blue Adidas 20, followed by DPM smock, 26 and 16
