Actually mate, I need to add to this, I wouldn't normally post links to BBC, but I have been made aware of a C4 progam called 'Dirty Buisness' I (We) all know as anglers how much water companies pump untreated waste into rivers and seas but this is beyound belief! Thatcher and the tories, and now labour really have a lot to answer for π₯΅ Here is the link: https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/c309z18e47no

Unfortunately, this type of scenario is played out in most sectors, there's nothing Great left in Britain. Apart from us dopes that pay our taxes and live by antiquated laws and processes πͺ

The national government 'confiscated' it. Instead of buying and building new local authority housing it went to national government to 'repay' the annual budgets and loans. Britain lost over 50% of the local authority housing. Building companies were given land at cheap rates for housing, which instead of building on, they 'landbanked' after gaining planning permission. The top ten building companies own enough land to build over 1.5million properties (which is Labours housing target), and have the cash reserves already to do so, but can't get the skilled workers as they failed to train apprentices, and refuse to build unless they make a profit on sales. There are some local authorities who have built or are building new properties, but used building companies who weren't part of the landbanking schemes, basically new building firms. In Norfolk when Right to Buy came to force, an estate of new council properties had just been built in Bowthorpe and Costessey. Tenants were moved into those properties, often from older council houses and the Right to Buy discount meant they got new properties at extremely low prices. The older houses and flats those tenants were in were supposed to be renovated. Some of the areas ended up derelict (Anglia Square) That is a story in itself. The Right to Buy scheme meant many tenants bought properties on mortgages that they could never afford, so were repossessed by the banks and building societies and later sold off to just cover the debt. Many private landlords bought numerous properties and made the cost of purchase through renting the houses out. I know of at least one Ipswich landlord, ex bank employee, who owned at least ten properties in Ipswich.

What needs to happen is stop the rich foreign and home bred investors buying up housing stock to let to tenants at a stupidly high rent. You should only be allowed to own 1 maybe at a push 2 properties and then There could be enough to go around. And at a fair price prices we pay for property in the uk is disgusting. in a council/social house be made to give back any house with more than 1 SPARE bedroom and downsize. we need a party that works for the people not themselves. Iβm almost at a point after watching that dirty business drama last night where Iβm going to refuse to buy a rod license but thatβs a different subject.
-
That worked wonders for council housing stock and affordable housing. What happened to the cash they raised?? I struggle to see much in the way of reinvestment. As I heard the other day, it's not a cost of living crisis, it's a cost of profits crisis
-
Bit strong mate, didn't Thatcher actually give the 'right to buy' council homes years ago to 'working class' families? , soooo many jumped into it, can't say I blame them lol π

I don't know enough to get into, nor support, any particular party. The tories have just raped and pillaged our economy, (despite imposing austerity???) Whilst allowing their billionaire buddies to continual increase their profits at our expense. We need a complete clear out and start again with laws and legislation that try to keep up with the technological revolution we are all living in. Renationalise all of our services to non profit organisations and see where we are in a decade or two? Although I'll probably have departed by then. Sorry guys, not trying to get all political & that, but I don't use other media outlets.

Hopefully this topic won't turn as 'sour' as a certain bait thread seemed too? Let me just state I am old enough to remember: 3 day week 1974. Thatcher the milk snatcher Hillsbourgh cover up Tony Blair - 'Things can only get better' New Labour - oh weapons of mass distruction lie brought him down Soo many more, one thing I have learnt is DON'T worry, just do what you do and don't trust any politicians now, there were a few in the past but can't be bothered anymore with all stuff appearing on media. As for greens, they will never be in power so don't sweat about them. On a lighter note, are any 'older' anglers getting on the bank yet?
-
I support small scale nuclear, it's good enough for our submarines and net zero is suicide. Thus, Conservative or Restore. Restore also address the idiocy of hosepipe bans and shortages in an island with 6 months rain annually. Build more reservoirs on flood plains, not houses.

Welcome to my world, had concussion twice last year smashing the back of my head on the car door frame whilst loading the kit. Given myself a perforated ear drum doing it on the last occasion. Spend 3 days on the bank wondering why I felt funny ππ
