  2. Check the rules to see if you are allowed to use a leader in the first instance having a knot above the lead can be dangerous if not made correctly. if you have a spare spool you could buy a spool of fluro and have that on the spare set. you could always use small cylinders of putty to keep the line on The deck and instead of fishing tight let a little of the spool so it sinks, once mono is wet it gets heavier anyway so it will sink more. sometimes less is more anyway.

  4. Hi all, I have started going fishing with a couple of friends and fully got hooked, excuse the pun! Iโ€™m now trying to get some equipment and wanted to ask for some advise please. To start with is line, leaders and rigs. I have watch hundreds of YouTube videos and got more confused. I have managed to get some reels and replaced the line with 12lb monofilament but want to possibly add a fluorocarbon leader and use it for my rigs as well. The lake we are fishing is very clear with a gravel bottom. The reported carp are between 12-35lb. Questions I have are What strength do I need, I was looking at the seaguar invizx Should I put a leader on as well as using it for rigs or just use it in rigs. If I use a leader, what length? 20ft? Thanks in advance, any advice gratefully received Dan

  6. He had to crowd fund it to get it made as no broadcaster would pick it up, because it's not just big carp. The people who crowd funded it got early viewings sent directly, I think by email link.
  7. I remember watching these on the discovery channel when I was a kid lol, along with John Wilson and Rex Hunt ๐Ÿ˜‚ If I remember correctly I think Matt Hayes brought out a programme with maybe the BBC over the last couple years but it didn't really go off like the old shows. But yeah used to love watching these and learnt a lot from the growing up ๐Ÿ‘
  8. Not sure if this is the right section to add this but.... Many over a certain age will remember the original series, it's now on YouTube with a new series and they have their own channel. I have watched the first two episodes and have to say I really enjoyed it, so refreshing to not hear some bloke banging on about big carp captures, which in my opinion has been done to death. I am no way associated with the channel, but if you want a break from the usual stuff, maybe give it a try?
  9. In the early days of streaming music, we used to snag blues bands travelling between dates on the west coast and Chicago or New York or Toronto, and they'd play our club on a Monday or Tuesday or Wednesday night, maybe to only a dozen people, then the next day they'd go to the song writing centre at Buffalo Pound Provincial Park and record a few sides for the internet, then get on a plane next morning and head to their next show. These guys left their CD. It's a love song.

  14. Merry Christmas to to all of you guys. Hope you all have a great day and year. All the best Elmo
  15. Yeah I do think the one's I bought would have caught fish and maybe more than usual when they were fresh with active ingredients. I just tend to fish match the hatch more often that not and nothing more important than where you put it anyway.
  16. Back in the mists of time, I used to make my own baits ,I mean they were based purely on attraction ,semolina ,soya flour and so on ,known then as a 'stinky winky bait ' only thing was ,they totally outfished well known carp catching concoctions from the main bait companies at the time... It was so successful I caught someone stealing my bait from my titan ,if they'd asked I'd have given them the recipe..the main constituent was low boiling points ethyl alcohol flavours and Asafoetida essential at 2 drops in a pound mix .....it was coloured yellow or orange ..it was truly devastating.. Especially when critically balanced with a round bean bag foam thingy pushed inside ,then a coke bottle cut in half to hold up infront of myself biting tiny bits of putty off ,until it sank ,ohhh so slowly.... I reckon and I'm always honest ,around 90% of stock , of the several waters I fished in the 90s fell to that bait ...thats no bs ...Good fun at that time ...
  17. Funny you should say that, on my local park lake it was 3 grains of corn held up by a single piece of fake corn over Vitalin that produced the vast majority of the carp caught. It is a very silty lake and most people tended to fish boilies which sunk into the gunk. The Vitalin and sweetcorn sat on top. I had some very successful sessions, and watched many others fail to catch. Boilies did work, but only in specific places where the bottom is slightly harder. I think there were or are some specials that really work, but I think many have changed as flavours have been regulated. The Solar Squid and Octopus, original Scopex (not later copies), Monster Crab, Green Zing, or Pineapple really did have something about them, there are still others now that work, but is is finding them. Add to that, fishing over bait whether groundbait, particles or beds of boilies may make our 'non smelly' baits effective, or even the single bait that the carp think 'here's one I missed earlier'.
  18. Just got a copy of A fool and his eel by Mark Walsingham aka Skeffington Dolrimple and the other Along fisherman's paths by Mike Winter ,who is Skeffs mentor .. Lovely read both..
  19. My mrs always moans that sheโ€™s cold I bought some of the uniquelo ultrawarm base layers for her as they are rated to about -25 doesnโ€™t moan about cold when sheโ€™s wearing them
  20. I've got 2 , and as you say they're very warm , although they don't seem to breath much and you can get a bit of a sweat on if you're not careful ๐Ÿ˜ .
  21. I just use a pair of jog bottoms and a hoodie over them and have been nice and warm ..I got the socks too,but not tried them yet.. A good purchase ..
  22. Looks decent ๐Ÿ‘
  23. I knew I had it somewhere..
  24. Althoigh it's not really cold at the moment, and to continue doing my winter sessions in some sort of comfort I always use base layering .. Anyway I thought to upgrade and have bought Zerofit 'heatrub' made in Japan....all I can say is get some !!!!
  25. Very, very interesting..Not me but my father was one of the first members of BKKS .. We used to go around various members gardens/ponds and learn from each of them ..My Dad used to go straight up to Heathrow, a long drive to pick up his Koi from Japan, this was in 70s,things different back then.. One story ,he bought two Koi,introduced them to the pond ..we all went to school/work ..When I came home I found one newly stocked Koi had jumped out ..and was not looking at its best ..!! I think it survived ...
  26. Well the end of the year has gone well. The koi are doing great and still feeding most days due to the elevated temps. The nets/covers are now off since the leaves are gone. The water clarity is insane.... you can see every little detail on the deck in 2m. The temporary floating skimmer has worked a treat. I picked up a pond vacuum a month ago and gave the bottom a good clean at the weekend which means there's no detritus for any nasties to hide in ready for the spring. It's a real shame I can't post vids on here as I have some great footage of the koi milling about. So now I need to plan for spring which apparently is the most tricky and dangerous time of year. Parasites wake up before the koi so it's essential I do everything I can to keep their immune systems working as well as possible. If you lose your water parameters early on, you're chasing your tail all year, so I have to be bang on it to stay a step ahead of any issues with algae, weed, DO, and ammonia, nitrite, pH etc. Really enjoyed the last few months and looking forward to my first full year with the pond. Looking to feed heavily next year to get some good growth, while maintaining the water quality. I'll keep this thread updated from time to time for anyone that's interested.
  27. I know those supersonic baits you speak of ...I tried them ,had more on two plastic fake corn critically balanced and a few crumbled freebies in a mesh bag ...
  28. Literally ,right in,amonst those dying reeds,i had placed my bait..you can see the line cutting down from the peg on the bankstick it was good knowing your freebie and rig were spot on
  29. Across the field from our cottage are a couple of small pools ..its where I go in the colder months ,or should I say rain ,..I thought I'd try the washing line method as they seem to spook off the lines very easily...any way this fish was one of two I fluked out ..
