With repect mate, from another forum I dip into, this bloke not actually shared anything about a 3 week process? Maybe you know better and would share? Anyway. guess the guy will have made loads of dosh from his well documented elsewhere exploits on gambling winnings ๐ Think I will dip out of this thread now, probably going to be a lot of his 'fan boys' his phrase defending the 'company', coming on here if they even know it exists? Just for others, don't be taken in by a lot of bullsh*t about bait, been going on for sooooo many years.... just do your own thing and enjoy being out on the bank ๐
-
I really don't follow your logic then, you are disagreeing with people purely about the cost. When you read the process they go through it doesn't seem that expensive to me, especially when you are comparing it to a tub of off the shelf pop ups that need a bait spray, glug or whatever to make them standout ? Some pop ups are overpriced I agree but these actually go through a 3 week process other than just rolling and boiling.

Actually mate if you are referring to SHB, I would never buy any, and wouldn't from any of the new 'companies' with hookbaits that seem to be on line now. I am not opposed to SHB, tbh couldn't give a t*ss, just feel that so many anglers are buying a pot of hookbaits that, imo, are so overpriced, just trying to put another point of view that's all ๐
-
That's a can of worms Kev, I'm sure someone will be able to assist but I used Co pilot to try and understand bio active ingredients a bit better. Still don't properly but this is something I learned which may help ๐ฑ ๐
-
I assume we're still talking about these special baits at 20 quid a pop. What I don't understand is were paying for a curing process with active enzymes/ingredients? Surely the active elements only last a short period then it's just a normal bait? never understood this part.
-
So if cheapo airballs and a tub of glycerine are 17 quid in todays money, 22 quid for a pot of SHBs is starting to sound pretty good imo. Pays your money, takes your choice, innit. Imo that's largely irrelevant on a thread about SHBs. On the right day I'd take a tub of black foam over any proper hookbait, but this thread is about hookbaits.

Yes Its certainly a phwoooar rated image ๐ฑ

Thatโs just reel porn โฆ Iโm surprised the mods let you get away with it

I did start a thread on this back when I had a Yately ticket (& more than 3 people posted on here๐ค), must have been around 2018-19. My take away was scope baits seemed to catch slightly more commons, yellow was favoured, but not a given. Although, my mate did the lake record (Slate grey (along with a few named ones) with a yellow topped Cell snowman.
-
Yeah it's good stuff I've used it before, I've also used katran though and just fancied giving the heavy stuff a go. I remembered how cool it looked on my reels ๐ฑ ๐
-
I fish a very snaggy venue that has all manor of junk on the bottom, so after good advice i went onto Hydro tuff and never looked back, does just what it claims

I've been buying some bits for the upcoming year. 12 cans of ngt bargain gas 28lb katran wild carp camo line And I have had to remodel the spinner rig as some key parts have become less easily sourced. So I've been on JPrecision and ordered some gape x hooks and some different kickers and bait screws and bits to play with. I have used kranks before and seem to remember them giving decent hook holds. I looked at alternative rigs even made a nice soft hinge rig , but it all seems too much faff ๐ฑ
-
So am I right in thinking you bought some, didn't catch anything and then blamed the bait? I don't see why you are so opposed to SHB.
-
No publicity, sorryโฆ and not at all that big compared to some.
-
Still the only one mentioning the term โwonder baitโ ๐ Tbh Iโd rather pay ยฃ22 a pot of SHB, a food based base with cork chunks for buoyancy and whatever processes used to cure them, clearly effectively, than ยฃ45 for a pot of airballs like over at the baitroom. Depends what you class as a rip off or whatever agenda you have eh ๐คท๐ปโโ๏ธ Iโve caught plenty of carp on pepperami, Iโll still buy SHB because 1. They suit my fishing and 2. I have confidence in them getting me a bite if I put them somewhere in the area the fish are.

Actually mate, sorry to disappoint you on prices, my fishing mate at the time was a best mate of Brian Jarret (ex Hinders Bait when in a glorfied shed), so pop ups and glugs at mates rates ๐ Anyway, the pop ups were probably the cheapest avaiable back in day, and glug was probably a Gycerine based 'flavour' who knows? Deff in those days, nowhere anything like rip of prices now..... To pre-empt, any replies, YES, they were a 'wonder bait' for me and others at the time,,,, were they 'double or triple or whatever cured' of course not ๐ Believe what you want, it's still the ability I had at the time to be on a venue to study fish movements etc and shared knowledge that caught me a few lovely fish..... Oh best not mention Chum Mixers before flying rats invaded.... not sure how much that bait cost!!
-
I'm not saying you won't catch on other colours BTW, more that if you are targetting a big common using a visual hookbait such as yellow might not be a bad idea.
-
Have you got any pics would love to see it?
-
Hinders pop-ups are 7 quid and a bottle of their pop-up glug is a tenner so you're actually not far off after inflation.
-
My biggest mirror, from Horseshoe lake, in the 90's came over a big bed of premier amino boilies, hook bait was a Hinders Strawberry pop up soaked for days in their glug, was it a wonder bait? Yes for me and others at the time it was.... Did it cost ยฃ20 0f course not ๐
-
And my biggest common came on a white shrimp cork ball...... ....... so it's settled..... yellow, pink, orange, white, and match the hatch are good for big commons. And mirrors. ๐คฃ
-
My biggest common came to orange and based on a tutti frutti flavour

Inclusion rates for 1 egg mix cork ball pop ups
salokcinnodrog replied to daveyyyyyyyyy's topic in UK Bait and Bait Making
It really depends on whether you are trying to use the pop-up as a single hookbait or as a food bait hookbait. If as a single 'high attract' hookbait, then for a 1egg mix, then the same amount of flavour and additive as for a 4 or 6 egg boilie mix. If it is as a food bait hookbait then use ยผ of the amount recommended for 4 eggs. So if for 4 eggs the recommended is 4ml, use 1ml. Now as a personal note, I dislike the 'false' taste of strawberry flavours, yet I absolutely love real strawberries. In simple terms, I know that I'm not a fish, and they 'taste' chemicals and ph levels over flavours as such, but other than specialist hookbaits, and certain flavours, I don't like overloaded flavour levels. Remember that less is more. -
Inclusion rates for 1 egg mix cork ball pop ups
OldBoy replied to daveyyyyyyyyy's topic in UK Bait and Bait Making
Hello mate; Not sure if you are aware of social media? but prob not the best idea to give an email address on an open forum! ๐ Also on another forum, some replies to your other post there: Daveyyyyyyyyyyy Posts: 8 Old Thread #1 12 Feb 2026 at 12.39pm Will 10 ml of flavour + 3 ml of talin be ok for a 1 egg cork ball pop up mix ๐ค As a rule of thumb, Iโd start by using about 1/3 of the levels you are suggesting and work from there. 3ml flavour, 1ml sweetener, depending on suggested inclusion rates from manufacturer. As per MrNuvawun's post below. When I roll corkballs I always go by the manufacturers recommended levels for a 1lb mix, Like 2ml Flavour & 1ml Talin. Use that for a 1 egg mix. Then take it from there. Less is more, you don't want them too strong. With such as thin skin and you lose some through the boiling/drying process. You can always carefully rehydrate them bit by bit afterwards once dried in a flavour/talin/hydroslate type solution. A lightbulb moment for me was Jason Hs podcast a while ago when he talks about the hookbait being the one thing you actually want then to eat - not try via attraction. I have never used a synthetic flavour that is palatable at high doses. In his book Gerry hammond said he liked a high dosage flavour in his pop up mix. Sorry to mods for posting this from elsewhere but..... Anyway mate, dont with bother with own hookbaits, apparently maize. tigernuts and even luncheon meat actually work too ๐ -
When I said that I meant it, what I actually bought was 28lb BS Katran wild carp camo๐ฑ I used this 21lb before and quite liked it but I think in 0.43mm thickness it should be pretty tough and still cast OK.
