The shockleader to mainline split

The albrite knot whips up say 7 turns and back down say 5 like a mahin knot

the trick is to keep the whippings tight not spread out up the line and make sure you go back through the loop the same way.

the real difference is a mahin knot has the overhand knot in the leader and the albrite just tucks through a loop.

not tried this myself but I have just thought about

half a mahin knot and half grinner

knot the leader and grinner on the mainline

if it works I’ll call it a grinnin lol

i also use another knot that is a cross between a grinner and a blood knot

I’ve never had that come undone.

Back to back grinner, seems to be a winner, none have slipped yet anyway. Framey did also suggest this one so thanks 👍

It might be worth trimming a bit off and also checking your line clip isn't damaging the line

Just redone all my spod braid, took it all off and re-wrapped it back on, the Braid that didn't see day light, is now onto (fresh). Redone the attaching knot, 4 turn backnto back, 5 turns onto reel, then half a rod drop to spomb.

You can see we're the line clip frayed the braid.

find it better whatever the distance tbh, this may sound blunt as an answer not my intention but using a shock leader takes out the shock/spring out of the spod on casting as it takes the brunt of the pressure/load and tension of the initial cast so even at shorter ranges I find it helps with accuracy /consistency and all that stuff and if people see 4-5 turns of shock leader they think you are the bizness 😎

I don't use straight through braid on my spod rod now, I lost a couple of marker floats and spombs that way (fox exocet poop braid) now I always use shock leader and actually haven't lost one that wasn't the aerlex's self closing bail arms fault since but I've always got those back because they tend not to get that far, they usually badooosh right in front of me 😜

I use Korda Basix Braid 30lb straight through, only 1 crack off so far, but only fished upto 12 wraps so far with it, if need further would a leader be needed ?

Strangely enough, I have actually just retrieved a small Spomb attached to braid straight through. I've not looked at how much braid, it's attached to a football sized bundle of weed. Looks like whoever smashed off at the clip and couldn't retrieve it.

That is my exact reason for a shockleader

a crack off with 30lb braid going only 12 wraps, that's not right mate, should never snap when just flicking them out.  Even on a massive chuck it shouldn't crack off at 30lb.  My mate had some very dodgy whiplash, snapped like cotton, very weird, faulty!  Whereas my whiplash lasted a silly amount of years no issues ever

I've redone my spod setup, put the Braid on spare spool with the unused at the top now, added 50lb shockleader....but I've also ordered some 60lb Daiwa J Braid, it was on offer.....

Now I'm using 30lb Korda Basix to 50lb Korda Arma Kord, 4 turn B2B grinner.

I got the sonik spod reel this year with braid, I have snapped off three times spombing a small water, still got the spomb. The line really don't like hitting the clip, needs slowing down just before the clip.

Thinking I will spool some 50lb braid to replace what snapped, should do it without having to bother with a leader.

A mate got it also, the Sonik Spod reels are loaded with Green 30lb Spider Wire.

He's used it a few times so far and is happy (so far)

Looks sound, I'm using 30lb whiplash to a 60lb braided leader made from pike braid I had in the garage.  Usually it would have been 50lb Armacord 👍

I found that braid a bit rubbish tbh seemed to snap way too easily. I also tried thicker braid and it destroyed the sonik spod reel, it couldn't handle reeling it back in

A spod tends to be 'heavier' on the retrieve than a Spomb because you are reeling in water and the spod is often under water where the Spomb skips or penguin walks on top most of the time.

I am using a Shimano Aerlex on my Spod rod, and a Shimano Beastmaster 7000 on my marker/spod rod. Both stand up to the abuse.

The thinner braids may be a problem with crack-offs as well, it took a few attempts for me to find a decent one; Angry Fish 0.36mm 50lb 4 is what I use, for the marker/spod rod and pike fishing. Over 3years the colour has faded, dye worn off, but the braid is still strong.

Yet another Dot spod I've found attached to just braid crack-off, although this one was just the fractured knot on the link clip.

I did cut the knot off as I used the spod for putting out some particles at short range. It's now in the spod compartment of my rucksack.

I still use an Amnesia shockleader, and have no problems with the mono leader at any range.

Last week it landed an annoying swan that swam through the line...

Poxy thing I cast out and watched this swan swim straight for where I was baiting up, and as the Spomb hit the water the swan tried to empty it and swam through the line
