  1. Opti-polos by Solar if I remember correctly prevented the tilting Optonics. I did have the Dellareed sounder box, a multi-pin plug in lead to the box as well, and made sure I fitted owl ears rather than the standard ears, so I could keep them in the box. Somewhere I have a picture of my 2 rod set up in front of the Fox Jekk shelter overwrap and the kettle on, some things never change... Bitech Viper alarms were awesome, if you wanted a 10minute warning before the next train went past on the railway bank at Barham A pit... I kid you not they would pick up and bleep from the vibration of trains long before we could hear them. Supposedly the vibration sensor sensitivity could be varied by the angle of the buzzer head. The Super XL Optonic was the supposed answer to Delkims conversions, or was it the Magnetonic? I avoided the XL and went straight to Delkim ST's, would be around 1993 I guess.
  2. The birds are feeding up, especially the females who will be egg sitting soon with not much food. I did walk the 2miles around the 45acre lake each day, and saw no signs, but did hear a few splashes at dusk just to my right which I think were fish. I'd love Chestnut and I'm trying to come up with a plan for the bigger common which seems to avoid bait. A few members have seen him, and he does look a lot bigger than Chestnut. A working quarry lake not far from Bury St Edmonds had the fish removed and sold to the syndicate, we thought the big common was one of them until the biggie from the stock was caught spawned out. So the big common is an uncaught original! I think that we have around 185 fish, that is known originals and the progressive stockings we have made since 2018.
  3. Years ago with original Optonics you had 2 or 4 vane roller wheels, and some of us created some 12 vane wheels out of milk bottle tops or film canister tops or bases until Dellareed started making them themselves. The honest answer is I went back to 4 vanes, any more really was not worth the effort to break the light beam inside. The benefit was actually for pike fishing where tiny movements were rolling the wheel slightly. When it came to roller wheel alarms, I started playing with lead setups to create runs that took line, as quite simply a semi-fixed set-up could see the carp sit still hooked with no indication or worse move in a perfect arc with no line taken or dropping back. Obviously the slack line and running lead is not suitable for every situation, like Delkims are not suitable for everyone (I still have not had many of the problems described by many), but the vibration sensing feature is handy. With zigs, and I will admit I am not very good with them, you have to have a tight line to the lead. The best indicator I found is a very heavy bobbin, springer or loaded quiverloc, which gives you the dropback or run indication. @yonny explains it far better than I can, and has far more experience I'm sure.
  4. There really is no hard and fast rule with flavours, sweet or fruit flavours work with fishmeal, birdfoods or meat, but to 'our' mind they smell wrong, so squid and octopus, shrimp or monster crab will work. The other thing with flavours is the solvent base, some are on glycerine (glycerol), ethyl alcohol, diacetin or propylene glycol, and each one reacts slightly differently in water. Propylene glycol is a flavour base used normally in cake flavours, so suited for high temperature. Ethyl alcohol is more soluble in water, so 'spreads' through the water. Glycerine is the usual flavour base for cake icing, but I think is an attractor in its own right, and a preservative. Diacetin is actually synthesised from glycerine and quite possibly the most acceptable to fish.
  5. 25% LT94 20% Acid Casein 40% CLO 5% Liver Powder 10% Semolina Mix them at those ratios. Then once mixed for 6 eggs add 5ml of your flavour, 15ml of hemp oil. Add base mix slowly gradually adding until it is right texture to roll. Boil for 1minute 30 seconds, allow to dry. That mix should work, no need for other ingredients.
  6. That's how I feel. I've been swanned out. The first 2 nights I kept them off the spot by giving them half a bucket of maize each day. Last night they moved into the swim when they saw me putting in a bucket of crumbed boilie and breadcrumb. My own fault I guess, but Chestnut normally makes her first appearance each year in the shallows around March to April so I was in the area she shows. She also gets caught frequently near the swans!
  7. And toads!
  8. Always about! I used to set traps in my garage when I lived on Old Norwich Road between Ipswich and Claydon, the darn things would get into the dog and bird food bins even in summer. Maybe it was because we were on the edge of the country, but they could be a pain. I've had traps go off within 5minutes of setting them.
  9. I promised myself that I would stick with just a couple of tubs of pop-ups to match bottom baits, so now I have The Nutty Bait pop-ups in yellow, pink, original, my Spice Garlic pop-ups in pink, Monster Crab in purple and original, KMG in original. So far I've avoided the pineapple yellow fad again... Glad you got that sorted. Better to give constructive complaint and get it refunded than fester in your mind.
  10. 10 seconds of Google found this: https://valefishery.wixsite.com/vale-fishery/venue
  11. Too complicated! Just stick with CLO, liver powder, acid casein, LT94, and add some semolina, (10%), maybe 2grammes of each GLM and krill meal. Any flavour you use, no more than 5ml in 6eggs, and 25millilitres of hemp oil.
  12. I've got a spool of fluorocarbon that has been in my tackle box since Nazeing days, so at least 6 years old. I check it before I tie up any hooklinks, check knots etc, and change the hooklink after every couple of fish.
  13. Welcome to carp.com
  14. When spodding hemp (spodding altogether) was banned on Layer Pits groundbait balls were used to get it out there. Vitalin (now Vitacarp) binds lovely to get it out there, and with a good catapult I saw 100metres reached! In fact I saw 1 guy able to throw his balls 70metres, it actually made Angling Times! I do sometimes ball up groundbait to go in the Spomb, and often add in loose pellets in the area above it, or even wade out with a bucket of groundbait balls in certain swims on the syndicate.

We don´t want to bother you with harsh restrictions and the like but there are some simple things that make life a lot easier for you, the other forum members and the mods. 1. Read the rules of this forum, and keep them in mind when posting. Most trouble with the mods or other members is caused by not holding to these rules. 2. Use the search engine as often as possible! There´s already a lot of information on here and you can learn a lot without posting yourself. Some members may get annoyed by answering the same question over and over again. A tip for the Search facility, when you type in the search term, click "search all terms", you can even specify which particular forum you want to search for posts in. 3. Be polite and friendly in your posts. For example DON´T SHOUT, so keep the CAPS LOCK Off 4. Check your spelling! It´s hard to read your posts if you don´t. For this matter there´s the edit button in the right corner of every post. 5. Contribute to this forum. This means don´t only ask questions although good questions are a contribution but answer questions if you´ve the knowledge. 6. If a post or thread you read is against the rules of carp.com report it to the mods. Therefore every post has the report this post button in the corner. Even if you think that a post is in the wrong place or is incorrect then report it (a "click" button to the right of the post). We would rather have report post notifications than a bunch of insults flying. Swearing will not be Tolerated on the Forum. I have removed and edited posts to remove [censored] language. There is no need for it. If you cannot post without swearing then simply do not post! As for Swearing, I don't care if you use asterisks, @, figures etc to replace a letter. The Implication is there and as far as I'm concerned counts as Swearing. If you cannot post without swearing then simply do not post! The post will simply be removed and the Member who swears will be BANNED INSTANTLY. I have also been removing Posts and Threads that are containing Text Talk. The reason for Text Talk is a Lack of space on a mobile Phone Text screen. There is no such limit on Carp.com replies/posts. It makes a post easier to understand if it is written in plain ENGLISH, with NO TEXT TALK. Ok spelling mistakes happen: typing too fast, unsure of a word. Please note that any posts which have TEXT TALK in that I see will be REMOVED. 35brvpx.jpg Then there is the most important part of Carp.com HAVE FUN!
  16. There has been an increased quantity of spam recently so for new members I have often been putting post moderation on. This is not because I don't want you posting, but sadly because I don't like having to deal with 30 posts advertising or linking to unsafe sites. Please feel free to introduce yourself in the New to Carp.com section https://forum.carp.com/forum/40-new-to-carpcom-new-to-carp-fishing/ and as soon as we can we'll approve the post so you can get a good welcome. To those members who have been reporting spam posts, many thanks, it really helps and to the other moderators, thank you for your help with this.
  17. The original Cobra is what I learnt with. I still use a Cobra Ace. I do lose distance with a straight stick, and the Korda one I gave up on, I need 2 hands over my head. Got me thinking about the dog ball throwing stick... get your groundbait balls consistent. I nearly always end up with pockets full of boilies😵‍💫
  18. If you have the UEA broad permit from the website https://ueasaac.com/general-public/ I presume you are able to get it through there. I believe that they use Clubmate, so it will be saved through your email address
  19. Nokia's were tough. Drop them on the ground and the ground breaks, drop them down the toilet (don't ask), dry it out, 24hours later it restarts. My mate actually ran over his, and it still worked. Really miss Nokia days, shame they got involved with Microsoft, everything went downhill fast.
  20. I'm looking to avoid Google and Samsung. I'm not scared of technology, but we advance too fast without addressing issues, and Ai is part of the problem. Both Google and Samsung are using Ai for searches and various other apps. As an aside, I heard an amusing news snippet this week, young'uns are going back to prints, and even 35mm film. The Huawei P20 Pro, iPhone16 have been rated as notable cameras on phones.
  21. I should put that after thought, High Nutritional Value is correct, but as I put it, it is balanced baits, the two being one and the same. Baits were split into high protein or HNV, and, or but, anglers did not understand digestion and how or what proteins could be utilised. In theory, beef is the best usable protein for humans, and for carp, but as a standard, carp can't digest beef. The same goes for many other products, milk, chicken or pork without the addition of the specific enzyme, or an 'isotonic' or bio-active version of the protein, easily or pre-digested. The one non animal protein that is easily digested is fungi, of which yeast is a member of. I believe forms of yeast were used in a Richworth special, along with a sugar that made the bait extremely effective, despite being apparently low in nutrition. Mainline have got the enzyme activity and yeast off to a T. Grange CSL, the two part liquids, Activ8 and the Activator, whatever the Pineapple one was; Pineapple has a digestive enzyme that breaks protein down, hence the tang in your mouth after eating it. You can add others to that list. What has messed up the baiting approach, is the two schools of thought around nutrition and how bait prices of ingredients have increased, making the long term bait approaches expensive and out of reach of many anglers. This brings in the 'liquid approach'.
  22. I often see the males group up in an area just before spawning, with the bigger females moving in a couple of days to a week later. It's when you catch that female, and she is followed in by a male or two you know that they are just about ready to go. It's at that point I change species. I don't know if it's worth a couple of roach sessions on the reservoir in the next few weeks before the carp show at Redgr.... as the big known common normally comes out early April at around 42lb from the shallows. A bit of swim clearance coming Friday while other members are otherwise busy.
  23. Looks like my pike fishing season has ended, they have started spawning and pike don't need the extra stress as they simply can't handle it. So back onto carp.
  24. Problem is that eel numbers are down, probably down to various causes, pollution being one, and eels were apparently otters favourite food. Back in the 1980's the Wensum in summer you could see 100's on the bottom, then they started being caught with sores around the area of Hellesdon, just below the chemical factory outlet. The Broads, lakes and rivers, it was almost impossible to use maggots as a hookbait if you fished the bottom. On the Gipping I used to stand on the bridge to Sugar Beet pits and feed maggots to the silvers, what they missed, eels would pick up of the bottom, you could see them. However this lack of eels is not restricted to East Anglia, it's nationwide. Behind Barham Pits there was a pair of otters, the river was full of big chub, gudgeon, perch, roach and pike. Then an otter explosion saw more appear in the valley, so where 4 or 5 were between Ipswich and Stowmarket, 18miles, (by road) there were now at least 15 otters, and 4 were on Barham, and another 4 on Bosmere, munching everything sizeable. As I mentioned though, my syndicate is not fenced, yet has little trouble. Coots go missing in winter and we lose occasional pike, not many. I think that at night otters stalk the rushes coot hunting as they will suddenly chirp and scatter. That is also pike territory!
