I bought loads in different sizes and colours from a so called specialist hookbait company, to say I'm dissatisfied with all of them is an understatement.

Falling over after several hours in a few inches of water is NOT the one.ย  I'm pretty gobsmacked I've not slated the company but I'm past shouting about stuff nowadays.

In hindsight I should have purchased 1 pot and tested, not trusted the blurb and bought lots - noddy!

I guess I've got wafters for days/decadesย ๐Ÿคฃ

Which specialist hookbait company please? I tend to get carried away always nice when I can rule one out ๐Ÿ˜

Imo any pop up that wont hold up a size 8 should be going straight in the bin!

I agree, although some hooks have different gauge wire. A size 10 Solar 101, may be heavier than a size 8 ESP, although I have not compared it.ย

ย

I have actually pushed my luck on Bromeswell as the rules are for a size 10 being the largest hook allowed, but I did do a brand size comparison as there is no universal size. A size 8 B175 is around the same size as the Solar 101, but with a long shank and inturned eye.ย

The B175 is also lighter in relation, being made of thinner metal. I also seem to get more positive hook-ups on the B175 to the Solar hooks.ย

It may be rig related, although I found D rigs better on Solar hooks and sliding ring on shank, or a uni-knot loop for the bait tight to the hook and knotless knot better on B175's.ย

ย

The B175's also appear, by sight to be sharper out of the packet, but that may be down to a longer taper to the point.ย

I have come away from pop-ups themselves and taken this thread off at a tangent, sorry.ย

Going back to the pop-up theme, I found if fishing over maize and hemp, a standard yellow, (not fluoro) 11mm aniseed and bunspice on the hook, fished low to the lake bed works nicely.ย

Does bun spice have clove in it?ย

I've been hearing a lot about the anaesthetic properties on clove lately, and how it numbs a carps mouth,ย

Each to their own I guess lol

Yes indeed one mans nectar is another mans poison.

Flavours are a very subjective area, and itโ€™s difficult to accurately compare one against the other as there are too many variables.

Baitwise I just use what gives me confidence, I was brought up with Rod Hutchinson flavours and ingredients, as started carping in the late 70โ€™sย

I dont use flavours in my main loose feed boilies, a good base mix should have all the attraction needed. So the only baits I use with artificial flavours are a few pop ups and waftersย I buy, as itโ€™s difficult to make them as good as you can buy off the shelf.

I used to make them in the 80s used to have the kempastini book of baits but lent it to a tackle shop and never got it backย โ˜น๏ธ

Yes I remember Geoff Kemp well, knew him a bit as also used his flavours, especially his Dairy Cream. He went out of favour after someone spread rumours he was watering down his flavours, I personallyย never believed it but the damage was done.

Yes I would say so, even though there was no social media back then, word spread pretty quickly.ย
There were some nasty comments made towards himย at the carp society show thatย year. I was there and witnessed some of it, felt really sorry for him.ย

I find it quite sad the negativity In carp fishing, I spent a while as a Contractor working with Dave Thorpe In the 90s, I used to bend his ear about anything I could, i know he got fed up with carp fishing after a fall out or something over his bait company, but he was brilliant to meย  i think it's because of him I started getting more seriously into carp fishing, it's even worse these days with social media sadly everyone now has an opinion and a platformย

Dave was a top bloke, fished a few sessions next to him at Waveney in the 80โ€™sย

unlike someย others he was happy to shareย

I really liked him, never fished with him but he didn't mind sharing, I caught the pond record after chatting to him about it, that was 17lb, after that I was a noddy with a dream ๐Ÿ˜

Hi Fellasย

Do you think it is important that all your different colour Pop Ups are of the same flavour , or is it just the colour that is of importance ? .

Also what about size and shape ? .

Lastly , would you worry if you didn't match your Pop Up flavour with that of the food source boilies you were fishing over ? .

Personally I just use whatever, and try different things on all rods, will maybe switch another over if I catch on one, but not too bothered about flavours being the same or different colours, if they work as they should, and stand out a bit I'm happy I want my hookbait to be noticed, I will usually have a matching pop up,ย  and a banana one and usually a brown black pepper + proper job to start with, I think you have 3 different rods try 3 different things, one thing I have noticed I can't find a favourite hookbait that seems to really stand out above all the others, it's usually the one you least expect that rattles off ๐Ÿ˜

I donโ€™t thinkย flavour matters too muchย when fishing over food bait, once they are feeding well they pick up everything in the area. I agree with Elmo itโ€™s worth putting a different colour on eachย rod, if one particular colour gets more bites then change to that colour on all rodsย
