Getting the most from backleads

Just a few questions to the more experienced anglers regarding backleads.

Is it ok to use them in deeper lakes?

tight lines or slack? 

Is it ok to use them in weedy conditions?

where to place them in the lake(just under the rod tip or further out)?

You can use them in deeper lakes (depending how deep 'deeper' is).

Tight lines - indication is bad enough when using back leads so you don't want to make it any worse.

Not good for use in weed - very bad in fact.

Whack them at the bottom of the shelf - to keep the lines pinned down as intended.

Exactly as yonny says. Also I wouldn't use them when fishing over bars, gullies, plateaus etc.

There is a knack to getting the back leads out further, as Yonny says to the drop-off.

I clip them on, then lift the rod higher and higher gradually (vertical) to get the lead slowly moving out along the surface, maybe 5 rod lengths, then lower it down to the bottom, you can probably achieve up to 5 lengths (a guess).

You don't want back leads under the rod tips if the water depth drops a few rod lengths out, it would achieve nothing good.

Come in handy where there is L plate boaters... along with tips just back from the edge
