crezza
right finally had the opportunity to use my spod rod for the first time the weekend but my spomb must have cracked off about 5 times throughout the course of my session. Im using a wychwood exorcist big pit 65 with 30lb braid loaded on there. Originally I was soaking the braid and using it for 10 minz or so but after about the 5th cast it snapped off so started wetting my braid after 2 casts which in the end didnt snap off, shud u be soaking the braid after 2 casts? i wasnt fishing at a very far distance 60-70 yrds if that, whats the best solution for me to stop the spomb cracking off as this got very annoying! up my braid or add a shockleader?? thanks
terryjones
I usually have a bucket of water next to my spod nix as I load my spod wash my hand in the bucket of water and splash the reel at same time never cracked off
pearbo
i have never soaked my braid up to 100 yards, i only use a cheap braid off the net at 30lb and have never snapped off even with a fully loaded spomb. id say the braid was duff. crezza
Yh I'm thinking the braid is no good aswell but I have not had it that long so must be a crap type, spomb was only half full too and when my large one cracked off I tried the mini one and that still cracked off to! canontroop
Why use braid on a spod rod? I use 12lb BigGame mainline and a very thick shock leader, cant remember the breaking strain of top of me head but must be 40lb! Never had it crack off ever! muscle20
fix the spomb to the main line using a heavy pole elastic. acts as a brilliant shock absorber. ive also switched to using mono on my spod reel around 12lb bs.
markspod
Use a 30Lb nylon leader (about 30 foot long). Due to the lack of stretch in the braid unless you are releasing a big chuck at the correct point you're likely to crack off
rafa85
I've started using 12lb mono with a 50lb shockleader on my spod, works a treat and no crack offs
crezza
thanks for everyones help I will try some mono and hopefully will resolve the issue!
carpsoup
Have you filled your spool up to the lip?? If so that can cause crack offs on braid. Make sure the level of the braid is 4-5mm below the lip of the spool and you might well solve the problem.
canontroop
I've started using 12lb mono with a 50lb shockleader on my spod, works a treat and no crack offs Rafa knows the score
Gaz
tapered shockleader with 10ib daiwa sensor, never had a crack off. its either dodgy braid or its possibly wrapping round the top eye (or the butt ring tbh) during flight
carpepecheur
It does not happen to me very often but when it does it can be difficult to see and retrieve at distance. I attach a small float and foot or two of line to the spomb and then use a weighted treble hook attached to floats which I cast across the spomb to retrieve it. salokcinnodrog
Why use braid on a spod rod? I use 12lb BigGame mainline and a very thick shock leader, cant remember the breaking strain of top of me head but must be 40lb! Never had it crack off ever! Don't use braid on a spod/spomb rod. It doesn't stretch and is more likely to crack off than mono with a shockleader. I use Drennan Grey Greased Weasel in 40 or 60lb, or even Black 30lb Amnesia as my shockleader with the spod rod and not had a crack-off while casting. wk9187
after having a very similar problem myself I asked the same question on here & the advice I went with was to swith to a mono mainline with a leader. I have started using a 12lb mainline with a 30lb braided leader ( lenght of the rod with at least 6-7 turns on the reel) and have yet to crack off again ! As I said I faced a similar issue & wasnt sure if was duff braid, or beacuse they braid kept drying out or if i had over filled the spool and the line was wrapping around the rings. What ever the issue was its sorted now I have switched over.
syddallj
I use a 15 to 35lb shock leader combined with 15lb mono. Never had a problem with cracking off. Mono obviously has more stretch which helps as well.
chris m
This has happened to me when i havnt raised the rod before spod hits clip. Rod acts as a shock absorber if held upright. If u r pointing rod at spod when it tightens to clip u willget crack off
Phil
I've blown up two spod rods before but never cracked off. The tips about Keeping your upright and using a mono shockleader are good points.
delbyd
I use the Greased weasel shock leaders, works well for me with a 30lb brais, also now have a float attched to the spod to help lift it our of the water for reeling in Edited April 12, 2020 by delbyd spelling
