  1. Hi, hope someone out there can help. Live in Newport South Wales and looking for water with a good head of fish within 30 miles. Must have good access as have some problems with mobility. Looking for somewhere not full of tackle tarts who spend more time looking the part rather than being able to fish. Any help will be more than welcome.

Hia, this place might just be in your range, not fished it myself, but it seems ok going by the web site, it's a tad more than 30m from Newport, but the facilities look top notch for access.

  2. Hopefully so.
Haven't been out since last August, took my nephew to barston, little git ran the legs off me, so I have spent the last six months giving up smoking, didn't fancy the temptation of a quick ciggie while out on the bank side, i'm pretty much set as a non smoker now, so i'll be back out soon.
My nephew had a nice mirror out, so I sent his photo into the Angling Times, he was well chuffed, got a certificate back from them.

  3. Why on earth would a fishery ban chod/heli rigs ?

Seems to me some lakes are bringing in bans just to keep carp anglers off the waters, looked a few venues and can see no reason why they have such rules, one water I'm looking at has a hook size rule, nothing bigger than a size 8. An 18mm boilie would dwarf a size 8 hook, could add up to a lot of blown takes.

  4. Probably one of the best carp waters in that part of the midlands, I always try and get up there a few times a year. What with it being so mild now might be a good time to beat the weed growth. on  a quiet day the margins fish real well, they seem to travel the same routs around the pool too, so ambush tactics work well, they are more than likely hold up in the main road side of the pool at this time of year, a little and often baiting approach would be best, to deep water.  gets real busy from next month onwards, a lot of the Canal pool members come over due to the close season on canal pool.

  5. Lol, Barston is stuffed with F1s, has been for a number of years now. Still a good place for a 20lb + fish though. I was surprised by just how busy it was on Saturday, that and the fish were showing, some anglers up there where doing over night, still a bit cold for that.

It's the opening times that put me off makins.

Lavender Hall is fishing well too, my neighbour works there says there have been a few good fish out already this year, it has been a mild winter though.

Hows you been keeping Bivvystreet, been out yet this year? or are you like me and waiting for the weather to heat up a bit.

  6. Having fished both waters in the past few years, I would go with Barston. Makins is a good place too, but Barston is more relaxed and has better opening times. I'm thinking of doing most of my fishing at Hopsford hall this year.

When I was up Barston on Saturday there was a lot of carp coming out, one guy had five fish by the afternoon the largest was 18lb, pretty good I thought for this time of year, I was not fishing, just out with the dog.
