  1. You are, of course, entitled to your opinion but I fact checked the Off Guardian website that you quote and this is what they said about them. Their conclusion is rather telling. “In review, OffGuardian reports news with a pro-Russian bias. Many articles are very critical of the Ukraine, such as this Ukraine admitted to interfering in the 2016 US election on Clinton’s side. This story does not offer hyperlinked sourcing, but rather translations of documents. OffGuardian also frequently promotes conspiracy theories regarding GMO’s such as this: Post-Brexit Farming, Glyphosate and GMOs. Although this story utilizes some credible sources, it also cites Mercola, which is a website that promotes quackery level pseudoscience. They also promote 9/11 conspiracies such as this The Fakest Fake News: The U.S. Government’s 9/11 Conspiracy Theory. They frequently cover False Flags and the US Deep State conspiracy as well anti-vaccination propaganda. In an article by Ukrainian fact checker’s, Stop Fake, they write about the OffGuardian as “Russian trolls exiled from Guardian find home for their hate.” Politically, there is a wide range of opinions expressed, with many falling on the pro-socialist side, such as this: Anti-Capitalism is NOT Anti-Semitism. Overall, we rate OffGuardian a Strong Conspiracy and Moderate Pseudoscience website that also promotes Russian propaganda. (D. Van Zandt 5/29/2019)” You are free to choose whomever you wish to believe but for myself I would rather listen to The World Health Organization. The Chinese turned the tide on the virus by using lockdown. It is inconceivable to me that there could have been fewer death if they had not done so. I suggest (respectfully) that your views are dangerous.
  2. "The “incubation period” means the time between catching the virus and beginning to have symptoms of the disease. Most estimates of the incubation period for COVID-19 range from 1-14 days, most commonly around five days. " source The World Health Organisation ( WHO ). However, if you have a link to more accurate research please share the link. This is a serious situation and we need accurate information. If the period is 27 days then we must stay isolated for 27 days - or whatever it takes. People are dying and a bit more isolation to save more lives is surely a price worth paying.
  3. Yes its a very good idea. I cannot understand why it is not being introduced in UK. Although you can print the form from a gov web site you sign a solemn declaration that you have told the truth. Then, if you get caught out, you get a fine for breaking the travel restriction and a fine for making a false declaration. The minimum fine is €135 which triples with late payment. A second infringement costs you €1500. Four infringements gets you 6 months and an even more eyewatering fine. I expect you only get a slap on the wrist in UK.
  4. Spot on Elmo but it is currently an in joke here in France. The word billy doo originated in WW2 when the Tommies called a love letter a Billy doo after the French expression "billet doux". During the current crisis we have to fill in a form called an "attestation de deplacement derogatoire". That is a bit of a mouthful even for a Frenchman so we use the expression "billet d'ou" - meaning a note explaining where you are coming from.. Now as far as my ears are concerned "billet doux" and "billet d'ou" are pronounced exactly the same. Hence, when we go out, we say "don't forget your billy doo. However if you want to send Mr. Johnson a love letter, be my guest. I won't be joining you.
  5. I am disappointed to see that there is still no need for a "billy doo" to go out in UK.
  6. Telling people to social distance themselves is like telling people not to panic buy.
  7. I have just returned from my first shopping experience since the lockdown started in France. I thought you guys in UK might like to know what the rest of Europe is doing and what might be coming your way. First, on the drive to the nearest town I did not pass a single vehicle. It felt very post apocalypse. In town there was a police check. I was a bit nervous because I had a sheet of paper with 6 “attestation de deplacement” (signed declaration of reason for leaving house) printed on both sides of an A4 sheet and was not sure if this would be acceptable. The idea being to sign and date a fresh one and cross out the previously used one. The first thing I noticed was that the police were not wearing masks. I guess being stopped by a heavily armed man in a mask could be seen as a bit disconcerting. I wound down my window to give him my Attestation and Carte de Sejour but was instructed to wind up the window and hold my papers against the glass so he could approach and read them. To my relief, he waved me on with a smile. In the pharmacy there was a table blocking entrance to the main shop. When it was my turn I had to move forward from my marked position and put the prescription on the table and step back. The pharmacist then got my prescription and placed that on the table and stepped back so I could approach and pick it up. Another customer, who had to pay for a purchase was presented with the credit card machine in a plastic bag. At the butchers, there was a marked line away from the counter so you could not just point at what you wanted. Your purchase was then placed on a table away from the serving area. In the supermarket there were hardly any trollies left. I assumed the place must be heaving but inside there were fewer people than normal. They must have taken a lot of trollies out of service to stop too many people visiting at one time. I was able to buy everything I needed. There were one or two gaps but I suspect this was just a shelf refilling problem because there were fewer staff. At the till you had to wait at your marked spot until the previous customer had left. All staff were wearing masks and disposable gloves. It was a sobering experience but at the same time very reassuring that EVERYBODY is taking the situation seriously.
  8. I hope no one is thinking of coming to France any time soon. We are in total lock down here.
  9. I do not like putting the lead inside the bag. The reason is, when the bag hits the water, the momentum in the lead pushes it forward through the bait into the carefully arranged rig. This could cause a tangle. I prepare my bag in the usual way but when it is full I hold it by the top two corners and swing it round a few time forming (what I call) "ears". one is passed over the other to form the first half of a granny knot (that well known anglers stand bye). I then pass a small ring over one ear and complete the tying of the granny (or reef) knot. That ring is then clipped onto the swivel coming from the lead weight as is the terminal rig. On casting all the bag weight is taken by the ring through the ears of the bag.
  10. Best quote from the video was "it is only cheating to those not thinking with an open mind" If it does not suit your water or your style of fishing don't use it. Simples If that guy gets paid for carp fishing good luck to him. I wish someone would pay me.
  11. I read on this forum that mole hills are the bees knees when it comes to ground baiting. I have several hundred to spare if anyone would care to make an offer. (buyer collects )
  12. Download a free program called Irfanview Link . Import photo, select Image/Resize set width to 800 pixels (or any other size you want) and save it. It does much much more. I have been using it for many years.
  13. It was a beautiful warm spring day today and me and my dog were doing a recce of a lake I have not fished before. It was 2 Km long and completely surrounded by dense forest. On one side was a narrow twisty but pretty walk that had been made through the undergrowth. After about half an hour I heard an irritatingly loud radio blasting out pop music. I came across two lads carp fishing. They had a mountain of gear and looked the part so I stopped for a chat. They had not had a single bite. They blamed the bright sun, the lack of wind, the time of year, their bait etc. etc. I said I did a bit of carp fishing and could offer some advice that might help. “OK” they said. “Carp really don’t like pop music” I suggested They looked at each other as if I were insane so I wished them luck and started to leave. “They prefer classical music” I said sarcastically as I continued on our walk. When I returned a little later, surely enough the radio was no longer belting out pop music. They had retuned to a classical station and was belting that out at an even higher volume.
  14. If you are using a fixed lead (as opposed to a running rig). surely there are only two possible outcomes - a toner or a drop back, neither of which warrant a sensitive alarm. OR - and perhaps this is where I am missing the point - are you saying that the alarms are so sensitive they can detect movement of the bait even if the lead does not move?
  15. In this situation are you using a fixed (or semi fixed lead as some people call it)?
  16. I get the bit about pike fishing. I guess my fishing style does not warrant an expensive alarm so I will stick to my cheapo Chinese alarms at around a fiver each. My best bite alarm ever is my dog. He lays and watches my rods all day long. Long before I am aware of a bite he jumps up and stares at the rod tip. If I am distracted and do not react, he starts barking.
  17. If I need to use an alarm, I am probably fishing with very tight lines – bolt lead style. I am curious to know how people make use of the extra sensitivity of expensive alarms.
  18. It is the usual case of jumping to the wrong conclusion. A friend of mine was about to retire abroad but his family had a history of cancer. He consulted a WHO report which listed the countries with the lowest death from cancer, Sure enough there was one country that stood out as having the lowest death rate from cancer. ------- Syria!
  19. I couldn’t agree more Yonny. The mistake some people make is that they attribute what they are observing to the fact that the carp DETECT a change in pressure and ACT accordingly. For example I have heard some people say fish rise to the surface in high pressure to relieve the uncomfortable pressure it has on their swim bladders. Or during low pressure they drop to the bottom and start feeding there. They may be observing a valid correlation but they are mistaking the cause. If you start basing your observations on incorrect assumptions then you run the risk of going in the wrong direction to further your knowledge. It is important to understand the difference between atmospheric pressure and hydrostatic pressure. Atmospheric pressure is the pressure you and I experience in the air at the bankside. Hydrostatic pressure is the pressure experienced by a fish under the surface of the water. There is a connection between the two but it is not a direct correlation. In other words 1 mbar increase in atmospheric pressure does not result in 1 mbar increase in hydrostatic pressure. There is an increase in the latter but it is much smaller. The difference arises from the fact that air is a compressible fluid and water is an incompressible fluid. So how much does pressure change during a storm? Well obviously it varies greatly depending on many variables but we need something to work with. Looking at a world meteorological forecast at the time of writing, the highest pressure I can see is 1025 Mbar and the lowest 975 Mbar so I guess that represents a fairly extreme weather pattern that we are unlikely to experience in UK. Just for information, on the same day in the UK the highest pressure is 777 Mbar and the lowest is 768Mbar. I am not being too precise here I am just trying to get a ball park figure for the highest change of pressure we can expect in a storm which seems to be around 50 Mbar. Using very simple physics, If there was no atmospheric pressure, the hydrostatic pressure on the surface of a lake would equal 0 At 0.5 metres depth the hydrostatic pressure would be 49.05 Mbar. But we have to add the atmospheric pressure to those values which is changing with the weather. And that change, in very extreme conditions, can be as much as 50 Mbar That means that under extreme conditions the atmospheric change above the surface only represents a hydrostatic change of 0.5 metres. Don’t take my figures, get your own from the weather forecast or from a barometer. Take the maximum and minimum values at your fishing location and then relate that difference to a difference in depth using 50 Mbar change in pressure = 0.5 metres in depth. (for Luddites still using imperial measures you can make your own conversion) So here is the whole deal. Whatever sensation a carp experiences from a change in pressure due to weather e.g. 50 Mbar it is EXACTLY THE SAME as the sensation it would experience by changing the depth at which it swims by 0.5 metres. But that is not all. That change does not take place instantly. It can take several hours for a weather front to move over your location so the actual change in sensation the fish experiences takes place VERY gradually. This means that even if the carp is ultra-sensitive to pressure change it only has to adjust its depth by a very small amount to compensate for that change. The reason that we attribute change In behaviour in how a carp behaves as a result of changing pressure is NOT because it experiences it directly but as a result of other factors that also change with pressure which may be temperature, wind strength, lighting conditions etc etc. Only by understanding this can you develop a true understanding of what is affecting the carp. Pressure change is universal in a given region but temperature, wind, light etc. etc. may vary more locally from lake to lake and even swim to swim. Of course if you fail to catch fish by not understanding this you can always blame your failure on the pressure change which you can do nothing about.
  20. I have had my best results in settled high pressure, with clear blue skies, and bright sunshine. ---- But I live in SW France and that is typical summer weather here!
  21. It is not that dangerous. The hunters are required by law to wear orange caps and jackets (to prevent them shooting each other). Also they are required to put up signs on the nearest public roads. I have been put in much more serious danger by cyclists.
