just a quick question about chod rig components really . in an ideal world i would like to pair up some 25lb esp stiff link material with a size 8 barbed or micro-barbed hook . the question IS ... in your opinion WHICH size 8 hook would YOU use ? there is more to this but i`d like to see some suggestions first before i reveal the reason for this question. thanking you gentlemen in advance as always .

I had a ticket for the meads a few years ago and I have to admit I was a bit out of my depth . In my opinion it's proper hard and I still wouldnt fancy it much now. Frankly it scared the life out of me and I think I'll be learning to walk for a few more years yet before I can attempt to run around nazeing. And that's WITHOUT the crayfish

blimey flash i could spend all night on here discussing the pro`s and cons of fishing crow green

just for the hell of it i`m going to agree with stevo . i`ve done a fair bit of feeder fishing for carp over the years and although the f1`s can be known to be shy biters , but in my experience , the aforementioned hybrids i`ve come across WILL take your rod with them if your not careful. having said that i`ve never fished for them during the winter so bearing in mind that that is probably the reason the fishery stocked them in the first place , mr cob may have a point . generally speaking i spose it makes sense to scale down the quiver tips in winter just like a lot of anglers do with all other end tackle ?

depends on whether its a day ticket water or a syndicate ?

provided the feeder lands where you want it to , just tighten up to the tip as u would a normal feeder . The very short hooklink means the weight of the feeder acts as a bolt rig and the fish hookthemselves in the same way as if you was using a normal lead clip arrangement What i will say though is it ain t a lot of use for fishing in weed and u have to make sure the pellets are softened to the right consistency or they dont leave the feeder so best test em in the margins first . Also An aaa shot about a metre behind the feeder will keep the line on the deck . I've even fished that feeder on a semi slack line , thats how effective the set up is

hey mr fox , just come across this thread and its reminded me of a method i used a hell of a lot whilst i was undergoing the transition between general coarse fishing and fishing seriously for carp. have you ever heard of the shotgun pellet feeder marketed by middy ? its absolutely deadly mate , you really cant go wrong and i`ve had proper sessions using it including multiple mid double captures . theres a video on the middy website which shows you how it works and it is SO easy to set up and use . its so easy that i took my mrs fishing for the first time , set up a light feeder rod for her and left her to it . she caught a wonderful 14lb ghostie amongst a very tidy haul indeed . as someone said earlier though , best use the heaviest tip you can find and dont take your eye off your rod otherwise you WILL lose it .

i`ve been under the impression that the chod rig is most effective with the bottom bead fished at the estimated depth of the "chod" ? is this the general concencus of opinion fellas ? if that is indeed the case , then i`m perplexed . if the best way to stop the lead bouncing the hookholds is to have the bottom bead a foot above the lead and the lake i fish is covered with an inch or two of silkweed all over the place , what is the best way forward ? my last 24hr session last week saw my son and i hook into 20 or so fish but only 6 were landed , half a dozen of the lost fish actually saw the hook pull at the net. luckily for my boy , one of the landed fish was a 25+ mirror but i initially blamed a dodgy batch of hooks . after reading this thread i`m now having second thoughts .... oh , and before anybody asks WHY it has to be the choddie then its simple . bottom baits , balanced baits etc with various length hooklengths usually produce the odd bite or two . since trying the chod my buzzers dont stop wailing

look up feature finding or fishing in silt using the search facility mate , i`m certainly no expert though there are quite a few on here that will be glad to help i`m sure .
-
well , the lake i fish has a layer of about 2 inches of soft weedy stuff on the bottom all over the lake so i just make sure the bead is 2 inches or more above the lead . having said that i`ve only ever fished a choddie as a single hookbait . this is why i`m so interested to read other peoples opinions on the whole pva/freebie-round-the-hookbait thing .....
-
i wouldnt have thought you need to put a nugget on the hook ? the fact that you`d be using a pop up means its self-bouyant (is that a real term ? ). i`d just make sure the beads are up the line a tad just in case...... until anybody comes up with a better suggestion (and i`m certain they can) i`m still thinking the necklace is favourite . i`m also toying with the idea of maybe using some of those nash soluble thingys attached somehow to the business end but i cant remember what they are called . ah , chain reaction thats it
-
i was thinking more along the lines of maybe a small necklace stringer tied to the lead or something similar ? my catapulting is about as accurate as my throwing sticking

thats a very interesting question in your original post with regards to the possible use of pva with your choddie , something indeed that i have been pondering myself recently i`ve always thought of the chod as a rig best used when employing the single hookbait approach but since its been mentioned in a round about way on this thread i`d like to hear everybody elses ideas on the subject . spodding aside (never like to scare the fish away personally) , what does everybody think of , as the best way to place a few freebies around around your hookbait when using the chod rig ?
-
it does indeed mr crafty . if im honest i was hoping to get out of all the fiddling about with the trial and error stuff but i suppose one gets out what one puts in and all that , being the lazy beggar that i am . thanks .....im thinking i might stick a split shot in a pop up
-
just browsing through the search facility (as you do) and came across this thread . and as such , this question has occured to me .... fishing balanced baits the way coops does just above , does it make a difference which sized shot you would use in , say , a 22m boilie ? same goes for the cork plug method . they come in different sizes so to critically balance a 22m hookbait would it make a difference which size cork plug you insert into the hookbait ? i keep banging on about 22 m hookbaits because thats all i have used recently after catching a 2lb+ roach on a 16m boilie on the stour a couple of years ago

i`ve always had problems with tying pop ups to rig rings with floss or very fine mono etc . i dont know what it is , maybe im just clumsy or whatever or my fingers are too big .....my mrs says im just left handed which explains a lot either way i find it finicky and at the end of the day im just hopeless at it . on hairless hooklinks i tend to snap a paperclip in half and use the "u" shaped half to attach the pop up through the rig ring on the hook . now i know that people will say "oh but that involves piercing the bait and therefore will affect long term bouyancy etc etc " but i`ve been doing it for years using the mainline fruitella and cc moore odyssey xxx pop ups and they stay popped up for at least 24 hrs . anyone else do this ?
-
thanks nick thats a big help , im now going out to the shed to have a little play about your input , and indeed that of other posters , is always appreciated .....
-
thanks for the quick reply nick but actually i dont think i explained myself very well . the helicopter set up with leader and lead isnt my problem its the actual hooklink itself and how to attach it to the leader/leadcore . all the pictures and diagrams i`ve ever come across of SILT rigs have the hooklink moving along said leader (between the beads obviously) attached by a swivel with a LARGE ring , obviously to allow the hooklink to move freely . my problem is when i want to replace the hooklink , say after catching , to save undoing the whole set-up and start from scratch i`ve been using one of those quick link type swivels to quickly change hooklinks . now , will the rig still work as it should or do you think i should be using something else cos i`ve been using `em to quickly change my bottom bait hooklinks for years ? will using a quick change swivel affect the mechanics of the rig in any way ? is there a recommended easy-to-change swivel that other people use ?
-
evening gents . hope you dont mind me whizzing this thread back up to the top . i`ve been looking through the search facility and this one , although it concerns heli rigs/chods , it does seem the appropriate one on which to ask the question so here goes....... when attaching the hooklink to the leader or leadcore etc , it usually involves a large ringed swivel . in order to quickly change hooklinks , how would a quick link swivel affects the dynamics of the rig , choddies in particular ? what do everybody else use/ recommend ?

morning chaps . i have the opportunity next month to stay at the mill farm leisure lake which is a small one acre lake in the village of wrangle , between boston and skegness , i believe , in lincolnshire . its one of these places that advertises fishing holidays/breaks that has log cabins and luxury cottages that are lakeside . i was just wondering if anybody has any knowledge of the stocking levels or if anyone has ever stayed there or fished it ? the website says there are carp and tench but doesnt mention the stamp of fish etc . now i have emailed the fella but i never believe these people since they all seem to talk their own fisheries up dont they i`m trying to find out cos i dont want to be taking my heavy artillery with me if a feeder rod will suffice anyone help me ?

i know somebody once who caught using a cigarette butt on a size 16

i would describe it more as shallow silt with a thin 2 maybe 3 inches of silkweed type gear on the bottom which may or may not be algae i`m really no expert as the website states , a decent popped up or balanced hookbait should sort it although i`ve caught on bottom baits before over there. i usually fish a snowman on one rod with a fluro pop up on it . i usually fish day sessions so i wouldnt lead around too much even if i could afford a marker set up after a while you just get to know which swims produce the carp . you just have to get up early in the morning to get in one -

it can be pretty good over there mate . i usually fish there because the front lake can get pretty well banged out. you`ll love it if you love fishing in weed , the bottom is covered in the stuff , the official bardag club website calls it fila-something algae but lets face it its weed as for tactics , location etc take a gander at the bardag website it`ll tell you all you need to know and its usually up to date too.
