  1. Hi Mate, Welcome to the forum What is a good rig to use anywhere? It comes down to what works for you. I have used pretty much the same rigs for over 15years and still catch on them! If you look at the rigs Sticky at the top of the page there are a few pics and a how to tie basic rigs
  2. Its a Cyanoacrylate, exactly the same as SuperGlue. Same as Nash Rig Glue, Kryston rig glue etc.
  3. I agree with most of your points, but the exception is using Rig Glue on Leadcore. Rig Glue can actually make the Leadcore more brittle and likely to crack off, as it can on other knots. I don't need to Glue any of my knots and I test them properly before casting out. My Splices are not glued as the Leadcore grips itself. I'm not worried about losing gear, its the safety factor that worries me, and using something that could actually create more possible weak spots is something that I can do without. There is a thread somewhere about SuperGlue and knots that I started
  4. Grinner/Uni knot for Braid and Mono. Never had a Problem with that Knot!
  5. The Majority of Anglers at the Moment are using rigs between 6-9inches long. Just being different and fishing longer or shorter than the "Usual" can cause the Carp some confusion. Short Rigs work best over Beds of Bait or Bags where the Carp is hoovering up the Bait and you need to make them run to get some indication
  6. The Shortest was about 2.5cms long. The longest was 3metres for Zig Rigging. For a bait fished on the Bottom though, the longest I have used is about 60cms
  7. Agree with you Nick. I first seen this "shocker" type rig publicised in Carp World by an angler called Chris Haswell, like you said maybe 15 years ago. I know it was published before that as well in Hutchy's The Carp Strikes Back, which is circa 1983. Chris Haswell admitted that he had heard of it before publishing it. Danny Farebrass published it in The Korda Rig Guide which is at least 10years old(?)
  8. same here realy as it has been said a lot of rigs and tackle is to catch the angler rather than the carp keep it simple but right and you will catch Think some anglers cause themselves problems by using all singing all dancing rigs with regards to presentation,I think emphasis placed on location in mags etc would be more beneficial than having 3-4 pages of rig clinics where 99% of times a simple line aligner would suffice. I agree with that Mate, The other thing that they don't put enough emphasis on is feeding and how different rigs work best on a Particular Feeding situation. The mags all seem to be making a Meal out of Rigs, but not enough on feeding situation and how a particular rig behaves in that situation. Short Rigs IMO work best on a Bed of Bait; groundbait and particles/pellets, than long rigs. Yet not enough is explained on that. On the Rigs Sticky, the rigs pictured, its easy enough to make longer. Remove Braid from swivel at knot and then tie on Additional length of approx Double the Hooklength as it stands. From a Basic Rig you have gone onto a slightly more Complicated Combi rig. It does work! For those who haven't seen it type in Complicated Rigs as a Search, or go into Advanced Carp Fishing and Page down, and it will bring up a long thread about Rigs and their Behaviour, Lead arrangements and other things. BEWARE THOUGH, this is a long thread where some real in-depth thought provoking ideas are aired. It can be a Headache inducing thread
  9. Must admit I don't find the Thickness of the Greased Weasel a Problem. Wonder if its because I try to fish as Slack as Possible, and know that at Extreme Range the Line will have curved and be running along the Lake Bed anyway? I can't get on with the Clear for Shockleaders, its too stiff, Weird I know. Everyone has what suits them best and Black suits me!
  10. Do You get on with the Clear Ok? I found the Clear was a lot stiffer than the Black. I think that because of the Stiffness of the Clear it may also make Its Abrasion Resistance less as well? I have the Black on my Marker and Spod Rods at the moment and found that even after a Year on the Spod Rod its strength is spot on (YES I do Check it regularly!). I also found that when I had a Tip Ring Inner worn through by Braid that the Braid got Fragged before the Black Amnesia! If you are struggling to Find Greased Weasel anywhere then Google it and it will come up. http://froogle.google.co.uk/froogle?q=drennan+greased+weasel&hl=en&lr=&rls=GGIC,GGIC:2006-44,GGIC:en&sa=X&oi=froogle&ct=title It is soft, and easy to tie knots in and Lasts as well as the Amnesia. I use it for all of My Beach Fishing. Price compared to "CARP" Leaders is £2.99!
  11. What knots were you using before you started Carp Fishing? Grinner or Uni Knot! Its the Best Knot to use for just about all fishing situations. The only other Knot that can match it for Knot strength is the Palomar.
  12. It depends on how much you tighten up I think. If you tighten up and can just feel the Tension then you have got it about right I reckon. Mind you if you tighten up so that it does slide down then it will be making the Tubing stay pinned down. I don't like Backleads at all and prefer to use Flying Backleads rather than Normal Backleads which I think lose you sensitivity on Takes anyway. For the Past few years I have dispensed with Flying Backleads as I have been fishing with Leadcore and find that by fishing it Slack Lines and Running Leads I get very good Indication
  13. Its also a lot cheaper than Carp Fishing Leaders!
  14. 10lb of Breaking Strain per Ounce of Lead you are casting. I use Amnesia or Drennan Greased Weasel in Grey. The Black Amnesia is softer than the Clear, Red or Green. Drennan Greased Weasel is soft and ties a Tidy Shockleader knot. I can't get on with Tapered Leaders but others find they work well. Keep the Shockleader knot to the Back of the Spool when Casting, it will help prevent Crack-offs, birdsnests and line catching on the Knot.
  15. I don't get a problem with Fraying, even on the ends of my Knots/loops. I do Burn the ends down with a Cigarette Lighter though which does prevent this happening anyway.
  16. Braids I use are all by Kryston, I know and trust them for my Fishing and in my view the BEST Supernova, Merlin, Silkworm, SuperSilk and then Coated Braids SuperMantis, Mantis Gold, Snakebite, and Snakeskin. Have used the Standard Braids for the Past 15 years with no problems, and the Coated Braids since the Late 90's. My Rigs are the same i have used since the early 90's and are pictured on the Rig Tying Sticky at the top of this section.
  17. Korda, Fox, Gardner all make ready made Leaders. I prefer to make my own using ESP Leadcore so I can get them to exactly the length I require. I splice both ends so I can Uni Knot it to the Mainline and Loop-to-loop my Rigs on using a swivel. I can change rigs in seconds doing it that way. I prefer to use Running Leads so that in the event of a Snap-off the Lead is not trapped on the Leader. You will probably find that 5ft is probably a Bit long. best length is probably between 2-4ft. Incidentally DON'T forget that the weight of the Inner of the Leadcore, the Lead itself, will count towards your loading of the Rod. So if you are using a 3oz Lead then add the weight of the Lead as well as your Bait/PVA Attachments and you may be overloading the Rod. No Matter whether you fish Leadcore with a Running Lead, Semi-Fixed or Helicopter set-up it must be safe for the Carp!
  18. Thats a Heck of a Range Mate! No easy way from either side to get to them. If you can get your Baits as small as Possible as well it may make a little extra Distance. If you can get away with no PVA Stringered/Bagged Baits which also cut down on distance. You've said that you are using Mantis, as Stiff a Link as you can get away with to reduce the Potential for Tangles and as short a Hair as possible as well. Keep any Shockleader Knots to the Back of the Spool when Casting, because if at the front, Line can "trip up" on it and either reduce Distance or cause a Crack off. Mind you, you probably know this as well as me, but others who read this don't, so hope it helps them as well.
  19. I agree with Neil on most of that, although I've yet to Prove/Disprove the Distance being any better, but it seems that because the Lead is going out first at Maximum Velocity it should pull the Rig along a little bit further than your usual Cast. The only thing I would change would be to go to the Solar Helicopter Rig Kit:http://www.solartackle.co.uk/. The other things I found to work well were Cox and Rawle Rig Beads in the Sea Fishing Section. They are a Dumbell shaped Bead where one end slides off to put the Swivel on. Just make sure the End that slides off is Upline or the Rig may become a Death Rig
  20. Walked around it a few Times, Unfortunately due to moving and getting a new job I can't get the chance to fish it at the moment anyway! I know some of the Carp in there are absolutely gorgeous looking Fish. I've seen the growth of the weed. Some spots you find one day are totally covered over the Next. Mind you its a very clear Water
  21. NO CHANCE, NOT WITH LEADCORE! It creates a Horrible join that things could snag up on and create a Death Rig. The size of a Knot on Leadcore, even with the Inner Removed is a lot larger than a Standard knot in Mono
  22. http://www.carp.com/carp-forum/viewtopic.php?t=22185 Same as I use in Summer. I change the Hair Length or the Rig Length and thats it! Running Leads for me. As for Korda, I try not to buy any of their Gear as I think that the majority of it is Kack. "Safe Zone" Leaders, safe for the Carp? Definitely not! I had one of their Shocka Rigs snag me up at SWP that someone had lost. It was attached to a Lead that could not pull free under any circumstances. I pulled in 50metres of Line through the Weed still attached to the Lead and Leader. If a Carp had been trailing that, it would have been subjected to a Horrible Death if it couldn't get rid of the Hook.
  23. Fishing Long Braided Hooklinks can be a Nightmare, but I do have a way round the Problem and its fairly Simple. It needs to be for me to remember it and comes from Kryston in a Bottle Called Superstiff. I coat my hooklinks in the Stuff, then Fold them down into manageable lengths for Casting. The Superstiff dissolves in water and the Hooklink can then be taken and as a fish takes it concertina's open. The Long Hooklinks with a Running Lead and Slack Line often give amazing runs. A couple of Bleeps then a Run that just increases in speed.
  24. I have moved off Braid for My Spod Rod, as the Braid has totally Ruined a Tip Ring. With Braid Shock Leaders because of the Lack of Stretch you need 20times the Weight of the Lead. Also you need to wear a Finger Stall, A mistimed Cast and Braid can cut to the Bone
