mrcarp
Hi guys just a quicky, im fishing in limoges from april 17th-24th this year what are the chances of the fish spawning this early, iv heard the temp can get quite warm that time of year but wouldnt the nights need to be warm to? carpquarry
Carp switch into spawning mode when the water temp hits 18deg This can vary from lake to lake on location and depth, my gut feeling would be that it is a bit early but saying that if we have a warm march who knows. mrcarp
The lake varies from 5-7 foot so if the suns up and hot its got a good chance of getting to that temp! Fingers and legs crossed we hit it a l;ittle before they do. They'll all be at a good weight to! Thanks for replying.
carpquarry
I think you will be OK as you say the carp will be packing on weight and also be in top condition, if the lake had a large shallow/spawning area area 1 to 2 ft deep then this area may hit 18 deg early and trigger spawning but I think with the lake being 5-7ft you will hit it just right. Good luck and I hope you get a few big fish.
mrcarp
There are areas of 2-3 foot in told! Guess i'll just have to wait and see. Whatever happens it'll be an amazing trip. I love just being by a lake, peace and quiet watching the world go by.
carpquarry
You have hit the nail right on the head, its not just about the fish, just chill and enjoy whats around you, if you get a few good fish aswell what more can you ask for. mrs_rusheslake
Our experience over the last 7 seasons has made us realise that the 18 degree rule is not always the only trigger or indeed is it at all? Because our fishs first spawning has happened within a 10 day window on each of our seasons the water temperature during that period over all the seasons has varied from 13degrees to 20 degrees. We are of the opinion that there are many other triggers... maybe length of daylight? water quality? natural food source triggers? Moon phase? Maybe science has the answer. Agree with CarpQuarry though I think you should be fine.
mrcarp
Hi mrs rusheslake, How are you? are you a lake owner? Hopefully we'll get a response from the very knowlegable guys on here! Im sure that these things affect the way the carp re-act with regards to spawning. I find it a pleasure to watch fish spawn, you get to see them when there completley unaware of everything thats on around them. Maybe even have one out whilst there unaware! Here's hoping! mrs_rusheslake
I am.... Bet you cant guess what lake I own tho..... As CarpQuarry said you will have a great time fishing in France should be all about chilling, enjoying the peaceful surroundings and any fish should be a bonus. Good luck
mrcarp
At a guess id say maybe possibly rusheslake??? haha I dont know if there is a lake by that name but by the sarcasm your ooosing in that last message.
fatfish
If the water temp hits 18d for a 7 day period or more the carp can spawn. They cold blooded and there life is governed by the temperature of the water around them.
carpquarry
It is unlikely that they will spawn before you go, just enjoy I dont think anyone can know 100% on spawning triggers I am sure water temp has alot to do with it but also other factors like Mrsrusheslake said. coops_northants
This is like my trip, i just know its going to be spawning time (may 15th) my timing for trips and breaks is always nearly right or sholuld i say only just wrong... always a week or 2 out from the best fishing week. im praying that they have either got it out of the way or are a couple of weeks away from it...... wish me luck. mrcarp
Well if they are spawning when we go, we could walk right up to them and pick them out of the water. take a quick photo (probably get lots of slaps around the face from a very lively fish) return it and take the glory! haha.......Im told by a freind who breads fish in the uk that the temp would need to be 22 degrees for the spawn to survive! And the fish would not spawn before this, iv known fish to spawn late april in the uk so this is more likely in the warmer parts of france. david1951
Been to France the last 15 years (or more) including many times in April, I have never seen or heard of carp spawning that early, think you will be ok!
mrs_rusheslake
Well David have spawned here in later April for the last 7 years...., which is not unusual for our part of France. Maybe April is unusual for other 'northerly' areas... liamclose
david1951
You are right Kim, I should have clarified that I have only fished Northern France and the Limoges area. Happy New Year by the way and wish you every success for the 2010 season.
mrs_rusheslake
After one day of very warm sunny weather yesterday, woke up this morning to crashing all over the lake... Spawning The water temperature has NOT been 18 degrees for a week, not even 18 degrees now. We thought maybe the very harsh winter may have held the fish off spawning during their usual last 2 weeks of April but no...
mrcarp
I'm in limoges now, not seen any spawning behaviour as yet! 1st night on landed 76lb cat and 37.12 commmon and one of only very few! Happy days.
markww
nice 1 mate! you have managed to get one of those meadow cats, hope they are not bothering you constantly. what swim are you fishing?
carpquarry
They are spawning at Carpquarry this week ( mid Brittany), now have 5 grumpy anglers who have not had a touch yet. Have been checking water temp and the surface water has hit 18deg at mid day when the suns been on it, I have to say that Mrs Rusheslake was spot on by saying end of April
mrs_rusheslake
Luckily, as in the past, our anglers are still catching indeed 4 spawned out 30's in the past 24hrs. Like I said before Gordon I do believe there are other factors involved that triggers spawning. I am amazed that you are spawning given the huge depths you have there. carpquarry
So am I, didnt notice it last year as no one fishing at this time crashing like mad from 4am to 6.30am They are spawning in the branches and tree roots on the far side cliff face even with 15-20ft of water under them. mrcarp
Hi mark, finally got the fish having it! I had 3 fish last night. 40.08 mirror, 36.00 mirror and a cat about 30. Looking good for the last few days! I'm fishing swim 14 on the south bank. Wicked water, but a little harder than I thought. There very cute! Had to work hard for them! I think the fish have thought, and perhaps tried to spawn but we keep having cold nights which I should imagine is stopping them! Silver fish spawn all over my lines, so they've certainly had a go!
