I actually use a knot similar to that of a spade end knot on my eyed hooks rather than a knotless knot as you dont get as much twist and stress, (the hooklink still travels through the eye tho  )

I only use eyed hooks for carp fishing- 80% of the paterns i actually use are Fox arma points

i voted eyed, in fact i don't know a carp angler thats ever used a spade end hook :?:
one here and everyone who used owner hooks in the dim and distant past

2, the Owner spade ends were a very good hook

Even tied with braid I never had a spade cut the hooklink, and the points were very sharp.

Don't think I lost a fish on them ever, shame I couldn't get any more, but I bought all the shop had at the time :?

I used kamazan b775 hooks size 6 with 16mm baits back in the begining of summer with excellent results,i then changed to the esp size 7 raptors i think they were with 14 mm baits, landed every run i had on those hooks except one, what must have a been a catfish, but ill be going back to the b775 soon

I've got a few favourites, and don't buy hooks for fashion or because of advertising :wink::lol:

This is what I currently have either pre-tied rigs on or in the box:

Carp-R-Us Nailers and Centurions size 6 and 8's

Owner FLB's size4 (Matt, found 1  )

ESP G4 Raptor size7 (bottom bait and pop-ups)

Kamasan B175 size 8 (for Pop-ups)

Drennan Super Specialist and Specimen size 8,10,12 (floater fishing) and a packet of Carbon Feeder size 16. (probably so I have some small hooks for Lily and Levi to fish with)

Fox Series Carp Match size12 (again for floater fishing).

I buy hooks that I trust and know work for the set-up that I'm using. So I use specific rigs coupled with the particular hook to how the Carp feed, which fish I'm after and what I'm trying to achieve.

Out of interest, Jake, why are you going back to the Kamasan B775's?

Cause the esp ones started getting rust on them after a cuple of days, and i can always rely on the b775 hooks, and they balance perfectly with a 16mm bait

Were you aware that Kamasan and ESP are both the same company. Drennan.

curently in the box and tied are

drennan super spec size 2

esp t-6 raptors size 10, 8, 6

fox arma points size 7 & 8

drennan shrimp hook size 8

for float fishing drennan barbless carp spade end hooks size 14 to 18 and kamasan barbless crystal spade end hooks.

i think the spade hooks give a better presentation when using small hooks as the main line comes in down the shank and tag end of the knot follows the direction of the shank of the hook. (hope this makes sense).

RUST??

Unfortunately it does happen at times.

You trap some moisture between the tubing and the hook and it causes corrosion, or where the hook eye is it starts to corrode for some reason, even on supposedly rust free hooks. The "rust free" is usually because of a coating of some sort, a hook may get scratched by sharpening or on the lakebed, but the eye area or even the barb seems to get a thinner or missing coating.

Was it 10 years ago that Drennan "bought out" Kamasan or was it longer?

I used to use both depending on which Tackle shop I went into, although I can't remember the Kamasan or Komatsu number (before Kamasan, same company :lol: )

Tucker,

If you can get hold of them, Spade ends in larger sizes are very good for Perfect Line Align style with the hooklink material coming from the front of the spade

nick,

i dont use them for my ledgered baits mate only when float fishing, small hooks no hook turning on the eye, plus the tag end sticking out all over.

it is small fish only routine for me.

Like you I prefer spades for small fish as well, although I found with the knot that you get with the Knot tyer (the "twist to tighten" tyer) is perfect for making a hair on larger hooks so I bought up a supply of the Spade end Owners that were about around 15years ago.

They worked nicely with braided hooklinks as well.

Flipping heck, we're getting "least" ejection without realising it on smaller fish
