addictedangler08 Posted January 21, 2008 Report Posted January 21, 2008 What do people think are the best hooks for pop ups ? wide gapes longshanxs , raptors or good old kamasans let me know james Quote
dan_the_fisherman Posted January 21, 2008 Report Posted January 21, 2008 Its more to do with the pattern of the hook rather than the brand, really for pop ups i believe you want a curved shank but straight eye. Quote
kidda Posted January 21, 2008 Report Posted January 21, 2008 i have to say, its each to their own on this one........ different people will find different hooks better for the situations. my favourite hook for my pop up rig tends to be raptor t-6's in either size 6,7,8. i beleive terry hearn also favours this pattern for his pop ups. ( says so on the packet ) while dave lane prefers longshank hooks for his pop up rigs. try different hooks as each will offer you something that the others may not. Quote
addictedangler08 Posted January 21, 2008 Author Report Posted January 21, 2008 At the moment i have been trying longshank hooks with a curved eye bu ti will try others next time Quote
seleb Posted January 21, 2008 Report Posted January 21, 2008 I think it depends on the hooklink material you're using as well. If i was using say a coated braid I'd opt' for something with a straight eye. If i was using a stiff material I'd go for something with an out turned eye. As has already been said though it's all down to personal preference . Quote
Guest Anonymous Posted January 21, 2008 Report Posted January 21, 2008 jrc 360s there made for popups supposeebly. Quote
carpingod150 Posted January 21, 2008 Report Posted January 21, 2008 A wide gape rater than Longshank for pop-ups seems better for me, I've found the fish tend to snatch at the bait, so a hook with a larger gape seems more likely to catch in the mouth. Quote
coops_northants Posted January 21, 2008 Report Posted January 21, 2008 like the old style fang x for pop ups. they work nice. Really though depends on the rig arrangement, some work better for different reasons Quote
salokcinnodrog Posted January 21, 2008 Report Posted January 21, 2008 I like B175's for Pop-ups, or the Super Specialists. Another type of pattern I like is a Hook with an OUT TURNED Eye. This is for when I want the bait tight to the hook shank. I got some Kevin Nash Outpoint hooks ages ago (years) and I'm still running on the last few. On the few occasions I use a pop-up bait I like the hook actually on the lakebed (or rather the putty round the eye) Quote
tonybranno Posted January 22, 2008 Report Posted January 22, 2008 Ive heard the ESP Stiff Riggers are supposed to be good for pop ups. Personally ive never used them so i cant comment on their effectiveness. Quote
seleb Posted January 22, 2008 Report Posted January 22, 2008 They're supposed to be a very good hook but i've had several open out on me now nearly all ESP hooks that i've used have been quite springy. The Gardner Deceptors are a good stiff rig / chod hook, they're lovely and strong with a nice out turned eye. Quote
tonybranno Posted January 22, 2008 Report Posted January 22, 2008 They're supposed to be a very good hook but i've had several open out on me now nearly all ESP hooks that i've used have been quite springy. Oh yes, i have had the same problem with the Big T's. Quote
zander1 Posted January 22, 2008 Report Posted January 22, 2008 I realy like Fox Armapoint ssbp hooks for popups or Gardner talon tips. Although lots would disagree as they both have in-turned eyes and hook points. Quote
dan_the_fisherman Posted January 22, 2008 Report Posted January 22, 2008 If your fishing d-rigs longshank hooks suit best e.g esp stiff riger with the outurned eye, whereas standard pop ups nash fang x with the curved shank. Quote
goblin Posted January 22, 2008 Report Posted January 22, 2008 Tiemco shrimp 4,6,8. armapoint ssbp 4 (zander 1 your spot on with this one if only for 26mm+ baits) Nash Fang uni 4,6 very very occasionally Kams b175s 6,8 simply a corking good all round hook Quote
zander1 Posted January 23, 2008 Report Posted January 23, 2008 I've got to be honest with you goblin ive never used a pop up that big. i think 18-20mm at most is the biggest ive used, home mades so they were all different sizes Roughly all the same size though.......honest Quote
