The Probe Posted February 11 Report Posted February 11 Hi, I'm going to use zig floats for the first time at the weekend, my lake deepest swims are 16ft. I've never used zig floats before, my 3ft hook links consists of 11lb Korda zig line, Fox zig float, 3.5oz leads and fox aligners with Fox black foam and size 6 Korda Kamakura wide gape hooks. Is 15lb Korda subline (0.4mm) overkill as mainline, I'm paranoid about crack offs. Thanks Quote
yonny Posted February 11 Report Posted February 11 Subline is a really heavy line, not ideal for adjustable zigs. Assuming weed isn't an issue, use something prestretched like Touchdown, Gardner GT-HD, or Fox Exocet. The GT-HD would be my recommendation. Quote
The Probe Posted February 11 Author Report Posted February 11 Hi Yonny, Thanks for reaching out. I have some spare spools so will order some GT-HD, Do you reckon the 12lb line will be fine for 100 yard cast with 3.5oz leads? Thanks Quote
yonny Posted February 11 Report Posted February 11 With 3.5 oz leads I'd maybe go 15 lb. Or go 12 lb and downsize to 3 oz leads 👍 Quote

The Probe Posted February 12 Author Report Posted February 12 Thanks for the heads up regarding the running rings. I just checked mine, I cant see how the line could cut into them? Maybe they've been updated?? I hope I dont have your issue, I purchased 5 kits. 🤞 kevtaylor 1 Quote

I was using the floats in 20 foot so lots of adjustment so mine wore down quick. I ended up getting a file on the cut/groove so they worked again. Quote
The Probe Posted February 13 Author Report Posted February 13 Hi Kev, Have you tried the Korda ones? kevtaylor 1 Quote

No but seen them, I prefer the way the Fox one sits during the cast, like the Nash one, the ring slides onto the float. Not an expert by any means but I'd look at the Nash or new Ridgemonkey one although it's so over priced it's crazy, not sure if there are any others worth a look at. Quote

Your Fox ones will be fine to use and if it cuts you can file and eventually replace the run ring maybe, it's only a ring bit of braid and lead clip, hardly difficult to make that yourself I guess. Just worth knowing in case it happens to you 👍 Quote

Something else, you don't need carp zig floats, look at pike fishing submerged floats they may be cheaper. Drennan do E sox sub floats as do Fox Rage, they do make good zig floats. Quote
The Probe Posted February 13 Author Report Posted February 13 (edited) Hi, I dont go very often, family life always seems to get in the way. Do you think they'll last a 3 night trip? I cant leave anyting to chance, last time I went was in August. Edited February 13 by The Probe Wrong month Quote

They get cut normally if the ring twists and the line gets wrapped around it. Quote
