Winter coats

Anyone recommend one? Was looking at the trakker multicore last night and made me think i should buy some decent winter gear, previous years have involved a lot of clothing and a not very water proof jacket!

Avoid fishing brands fella. The carp brands don't make clothing. They re-brand cheap Chinese clothing.

Think Army gear or one of the big hiking/camping manufacturers.

If you can find last seasons gear in a decent brand you can often get it at very good prices.

 

I managed to pick up a northface jacket, a puffa style jacket which zips into a waterproof outer coat doing this at a vastly reduced price. It's incredibly warm but also really flexible being able to wear it either as a puffa jacket, a water proof or with both zipped together. Can't remember the exact discount but it was less than 50% vs current seasons style for a similar coat. This was a few years a go and it's still going strong.

 

Once you know the style name a bit of googling and searching websites, normally smaller online independent stores can locate a good deal.

I managed to pick up a northface jacket

 

I use Northface insulated trousers, got them cheap while in the US, a million times better than the carp gear. Really good stuff.

 

Karrimor from Sport Direct and Cragghopper from TK Maxx both good cheap options.

The one good thing the fishing brands have is there pocket placements tends be to better (more useful). I have an old army jacket which had no pockets so that was a massive pain in the backside!

Another one to consider is skiing stuff, again last seasons gear quite cheap if you look around

Myself its military as its designed for extreme cold weather if you dont mind second hand.

But look for ecw military.

Ginger some do as squadies dont put hands in pockets ..

Can't find ' Elm Tree Country Wear' but if they are a standard wax jacket then they are not a thermal winter coat , waterproof and windproof yes .

The ex military ones normally  offer the best performance , but don't forget your layers .

Does for me old chap, its for dog walking, i hate the cold, dead warm , wouldnt speculate on how waterproof but fantastic value for money.

Ideal for dog walking , but don't forget while walking your generating heat unlike sitting while fishing  hence two different objectives . A decent wax jacket will be 100% waterproof , not breathable though .

Agreed do like layers instead of just a warm jacket.

 

As the military say layers are better as you can remove and add as needed

For sure David, layer systems are way more effective for warmth. There's no stand-alone jacket out there that'll keep you warm at -5.

Base layer, long sleeve T-shirt, micro fleece, fleece, jacket - you'll be toasty at any temperature the UK can throw at you.
