We blanked! leggs had a mighty take early on the Sunday but it snagged him up round the island and got off. All of the fish caught were taken from the car park "half" of the lake, Nige had his forty from one of the island swims, Courts shared the island and had a 30 plus while Coops was in the car park swim and had some cracking fish. Andy52 was in the swim furthest from there which produced, a new PB for him, as it goes. Bless! Ian

Take basic stuff, like drinking water, with you. The amenities amount to three Portaloos that stink. End of. No tap, even. This is compensated by the fact that 500 yards from the gate is a proper choice of food/supplies, Chinese x2, Pizza x2, Curry House x2, Chip Shop, Co-op Mini Mart, hairdresser( ). Also, be prepared for mud. The whole site is low lying and marshy with mozzies for breakfast, lunch and dinner. The upside is that the fish are in perfect condition and of good size. Don't even think of breaking the rules, by the way. The bailiffs are on the case, at all times. Please let us know your thoughts when you've fished there. I wish you good fortune! Ian

Andy, pardon my correction. it's Pendigo Lake. I've spent several minutes on google and can't find who runs the fishing on there, I live 5 minutes drive from NEC. Ian no problem ian seem to remember it was fished by the n.e.c's own fishing club. but it was years ago, so it might have changed That's just triggered a distant memory.....it may be that the NEC fire brigade has the rights, maybe the entire local brigade/s. I occasionaly have a drink with a couple of guys who work at NEC, next time I do I'll ask the question. Ian

I don't think that there any particular hot pegs, though I can understand the attraction of fishing to the islands which, by the way, don't always produce. And if you've read Mach3's comment that he was "very fortunate to catch a 29.4 Common", don't believe a word. He wasn't fortunate, he worked hard for that fish and it was just reward for a thinking, working approach to Merrington. His comment about the actions of other anglers, particularly those attending a social organized by one of the largest carp forums in this land, should be believed. The tales of trashing and abusing the place that Elaine told us beggar belief. Shame to be tarred with the same brush as bloody fools but we must see her point of view. Ian

Jez, nice to be reminded of that catch. What a cracking looking fish. Also nice to be reminded of the barn owl that showed no fear of us whatsoever. As regards the notion of fish thefts from Merrington, I have good reason to doubt it. Firstly, the resident fish were stocked from a water which is well known for it's shy, wary carp which don't surrender readily. This is not a runs water. Secondly, Elaine, the owner/bailiff knows exactly who is fishing, where and for how long. This lady is no fool, despite her friendly, helpful manner. Merrington isn't easy but rewards/requires thoughtful angling. Ian

The best day's fishing I've ever had was on a marina off the Birmingham-Fazeley Canal, in Fazeley. Most of the boats are used as permanent residences and the fish get fed frequently and become used to all manner of feed. This particular marina can only be fished from one of the moored boats but I know of others where angling is allowed. Worth a look? Ian

I imagine that you refer to the lake over the Coventry Road (A45) from the end of the shorter runway. If so it has no name but is on the grounds of the Civil Service Members Social Club which is in Damson Lane, just up the road from the lake. I've been to a few functions at this club and have asked several members about fishing there and received several differing answers, the most popular seem to be that you need to either work for the Civil Service or be invited to fish as a guest of a member. You obviously know the area so why not visit the club and ask the question? If this isn't the water you refer to come back and I'll probably be able to help. Ian

Three Men in a Boat by Jerome K Jerome. I won this as an attendance prize at Sunday School, aged maybe 12. The lady who selected it for me knew my sense of humour. I'm 60 now and have read it many times and STILL it makes me roar with laughter. Anyone who appreciates the use and choice of words in humour will love this book, even though it was written in Victorian times. I commend it to you. Ian

Mike, is that the lake between Sheepy Magna and Sheepy Parva, with an Italian Restaurant on it's road edge? If so I drove past it today, looks rather nice. Ian
