jules007 Posted November 23 Author Report Posted November 23 Its hard to think, and makes me feel rather old that i used to fish this little river maybe 46 years ago but more to the point i used to err "poach" in the old stew pond this river flows through to catch eel, roach rudd and more important proper old wild carp and of course lots of Perch, those were happy days indeed whataclonker 1 Quote
whataclonker Posted November 23 Report Posted November 23 I have similar memories of fishing the fenland drains & rivers when I was a boy. I didn't have a cane rod though, just my trusty shakespeare telescopic! There's something special about a Perch. Especially your first. They are beautiful looking fish in my opinion - almost prehistoric! Thanks for sharing. jules007 1 Quote

whataclonker Posted November 23 Report Posted November 23 You're right there! Out of interest - what did you catch that beast on? Quote
commonly Posted November 24 Report Posted November 24 My nine year old caught this while fishing a small farm pond, several weeks ago😍 whilst with his mate. He won't forget that one. He says it felt stuck so he just pulled harder😉 Size 6 hook in it's mouth.!!!! I have tried a couple of times to recatch it and weigh it, but only seem to get the small ones. whataclonker and jules007 2 Quote

In my head a small spinner or spoon would single out the bigger perch, but you nearly always hear about them being caught on a lob. jules007 and commonly 2 Quote

Live bait like a small roach or similar sorts the big ones, and they can suck in a surprisingly large live bait, but it goes against the grain for me, i work on catch and release not catch and impale on even bigger hook, some might think it wrong to put a lob on hook (wife does) but i dont have a problem drowning worms whataclonker 1 Quote
whataclonker Posted November 24 Report Posted November 24 Their mouths are huge so I don't doubt it. I've never really thought of live baiting for perch before for some reason - it doesn't sit well with me anymore either. In fact, it never really did sit right the few times I tried it for pike. I actually do feel a little bad for the worms. 😂 Maggots however... jules007 and commonly 1 1 Quote

commonly Posted November 24 Report Posted November 24 From what I can tell, I think he had caught a rudd on sweetcorn & the size 6 hook was enough to catch it. He swares he caught it on sweetcorn 😆 whataclonker and jules007 2 Quote
