Its hard to think, and makes me feel rather old that i used to fish this little river maybe 46 years ago but more to the point i used to err "poach" in the old stew pond this river flows through to catch eel, roach rudd and more important proper old wild carp and of course lots of Perch, those were happy days indeed

I have similar memories of fishing the fenland drains & rivers when I was a boy. I didn't have a cane rod though, just my trusty shakespeare telescopic!

There's something special about a Perch. Especially your first.

They are beautiful looking fish in my opinion - almost prehistoric!

Thanks for sharing.

Yes Perch are a lovely fish, always thought if they grew to 25lb no one would fish for carp lol, im lucky enough to of caught a 4 1/4 lb perch, hell of a fish

My nine year old caught this while fishing a small farm pond, several weeks ago😍 whilst with his mate.

He won't forget that one.

He says it felt stuck so he just pulled harder😉

Size 6 hook in it's mouth.!!!!

I have tried a couple of times to recatch it and weigh it, but only seem to get the small ones.

You're right there!

Out of interest - what did you catch that beast on?

it fell to a good old fashioned lobworm fished on stick float set up at the time i had (and foolishly sold) a TFG Matt Hayes X1 river and stream 1lb avon rod and the big perch put a right bend in that classic rod

I bet it almost bent around double!

In my head a small spinner or spoon would single out the bigger perch, but you nearly always hear about them being caught on a lob.

Live bait like a small roach or similar sorts the big ones, and they can suck in a surprisingly large live bait, but it goes against the grain for me, i work on catch and release not catch and impale on even bigger hook, some might think it wrong to put a lob on  hook (wife does) but i dont have a problem drowning worms

Their mouths are huge so I don't doubt it.

I've never really thought of live baiting for perch before for some reason - it doesn't sit well with me anymore either. In fact, it never really did sit right the few times I tried it for pike.

I actually do feel a little bad for the worms. 😂

Maggots however...

That pool is Southwick pool, In Sept I fished the peg opposite and had this... Stuart (AKA  The Sweetcorn Kid, hence SK films) popped over to see how we were getting on that day... I've know him since 2008 when we fished Les Quis... top lad, makes good vids
